The bands you never saw.

Discussion: The bands you never saw.
nate... · 19 years ago
So all you n00b frufans got me ta thinkin.

What bands (other than them) do you regret never having seen live?

For me, the first that pops to mind is Alice in Chains.

Talcott Back · 19 years ago
I never got to see XTC, but then they stopped touring when I was an infant ;-)
I didn't get a chance to see BNL in their pre-Stunt days. Which means that I'll likely never be able to afford to see them ;-)
I've also never managed to catch Ben Folds (Five or solo)
Oh, and I didn't get a chance to see Simon and Garfunkel on their last tour. Before that I used to say that a Simon and Garfunkel reunion tour was one of the only concerts I'd be willing to shell out $40+ for. Apparently that was a lie ;-)

None of this mentions all of the folkish groups I'd like to see, but I expect to see them play at some point.

simon and garfunkel was one of the best shows i saw in 2003.

i've seen ben solo a bunch of times, but i really wish i'd seen a five show.

also rem with bill berry (seeing them iin 2003 was an amazing experience, but i missed bill very much).

i don't think i'd have wanted to see the beatles, as weird as that might sound. i got annoyed enough with the teenyboppers at fruvous and jump, little children shows.
Bender Back · 19 years ago
The Beatles really weren't a band you saw live. They were a group, not a band. Seeing them live was very disappointing to anyone who really appreciated the albums, from what I understand.
Nik Chaikin Back · 19 years ago
My dad saw The Beatles live, couldn't hear a thing over all the fan girls screaming.

I passed up a BF5 show.... to see Fruvous. Passed up a Guster show that same week, too, back before Guster shows started sucking.

I don't regret it, though, because I saw two very excellent Fruvous shows, both of which ended with Gulf War Song.

See, for me, the former is the only one I'd *want* to see. His solo albums did absolutely nothing for me, though BFF was phenomenal.

Talcott Back · 19 years ago
See, if I had the choose, I'd rather see him solo (not that I could see the full band if I wanted to). I like all of his albums (although I do have a preference for his later work), and seeing him today would give the greatest range to the set list. Other than the stylistic evolution (which was evident in later BFF stuff too), I don't hear much of a difference between him with or without a band. I imagine if BFF got back together, the shows would be different, but the set lists would likely be similar.

Just curious, have you listened at all to his live album? Is it that you don't like how he sounds solo, or is it that you don't like the stylistic direction?

nate... Back · 19 years ago
stylistic direction, definitely.

Like, I found BFF to be brilliant to the same extent that I found ben folds solo material to be unlistenable.
It's just... hidious.

It's like some bastard child of Burt Bacharach took over his body and made him do stuff that was like.....Burt Bacharach.

*shudder*

Ben Fold is touring with Rufus Wainwright now.. which I'm thrilled about. I'm taking my best friend to see them for her 18th birthday. She's more to see Ben, and I for Rufus... Rufus is one of the acts I've missed the last 6 times he's been in my area.. gosh-darn age restrictions x_x

I think I might actually go see Nine Inch Nails if they come back. I've been told Trent puts on one hell of a show... however, this might mean I'd have to sit through Queens of the Stone Age..

Sandy Denny
Sandy Denny
Sandy Denny
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Led Zeppelin
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years ago
Sandy Denny is a good choice. Golden age Fairport Convention with her on lead vocals and Richard Thompson on guitar is way up on my list.
Paul Back · 19 years ago
That would have been great seeing Fairport with Sandy, RT, Ashley and Iain Matthews all together...
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 19 years ago

  • The Beatles
  • The Stones
  • The Who
  • The Ramones
  • Simon and Garfunkel
  • Springsteen
  • Hayden's London Concerts [a little before my time]

I could go on forever.
Nik Chaikin Back · 19 years ago
There's still time to see The Stones, i think they'll still be touring after I'M dead.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years ago
Why not? they've been touring for years with Keith Richards dead.
Will work for anime · 19 years ago
REM with Bill Berry (preferable the Green Tour)
Crowded House with Paul Hester
Prince and the Revelotion
Pulp
Split Enz
Genesis with Peter Gabrial
Genesis with Phil Collins
RENT with the original broadway cast
goovie is married! Back · 19 years ago
i would love to have seen the green tour. but even more, i would love to have seen rem playing their early, crazy shows at the 40 watt in athens.
Songbill Back · 19 years ago
Have you heard the bootleg, I think it's called "So Much younger Then" of them playing in Athens probably in 79-80 pre-Radio Free Europe. It's hilarious: they were a sort of surfy slop-pop dance band... not like the band they'd become a year or so later.
*joolee* · 19 years ago
I think I have see all the groups I care about.

BUT, I would totally *swoon* to see Cats on Broadway with Jacob Brent as Mr. Mistoffelees.

I'm cool! 8)

The Clash
Smashing Pumpkins (who may be getting together again)
Soul Coughing

Grateful Dead, around 1973. Peak of the Keith and Donna era.

The Band

...Julie Andrews. I'll never get to hear her sing again.

One of my biggest is never having seen Queen before Freddie Mercury died...

John Prine is supposed to be on CBS's news program Sunday Morning today(Sunday) I guess its only if you are in the US though...
goovie is married! Back · 19 years ago
john prine is awesome live. i hate his fans, tho.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years ago
I think the Prine fans being a problem is a chicago thing. Of course I only saw him once, at the Fleadh, I saw Fruvous at there too. He is awesome live in and out of Chicago.
goovie is married! Back · 19 years ago
you're right, it may be a chicago thing.
Bender Back · 19 years ago
What are his fans like? I didn't have any fan problems when I saw him at Appel Farm in 1997.
Paul Back · 19 years ago
unfortunately he wasn't on after all. I saw him with Joan Baez once an awesome concert. I don't remember anything annoying about his fans though...

Kate Wolf
Kate Wolf
Kate Wolf

Young Billy Joel
Woody Guthrie
Nick Drake
Warren Zevon
Pete Seeger
Eva Cassidy

But I'm so glad that I had the possibility of seeing Dave van Ronk at the Bottom Line before both passed away...
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years ago
As you've mentioned Kate Wolf 3 times I have to ask if you've seen Nanci Griffith?

The only one on your list I've seen is Pete but I've seen him more times than I can count.
Phoenix Back · 19 years ago
Unfortunately I missed Nanci when she played in the UK in 2001 *woe* ;)
goovie is married! Back · 19 years ago
nick drake and steve goodman are definitely at the top of my solo artist list.

i'm so glad that i've seen pete seeger.
nate... Back · 19 years ago
I got to see dave van ronk at goddard when I was there. He played in the cafeteria, and about 15 people showed up.
:D

Recorded it from about 10 feet away.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years ago
The Late Great Dave Van Ronk is the one performer I'd take my non-folk music fans to go see with me. They always had the same reaction, "He's so cool."
