Favorite Game On A Grid?
I knew somebody would say Go. I've never played it but it is the kind of game I should. Of course the same can be said of reversi aka Othello and I suck at that.
I played Go in social studies last year...that game rocks.
we also played some mongolian game with sheep anklebones. i have no clue what that was called, and it definitely wasn't on a grid. but it was pretty darned cool. and way better than doing real work.

Othello is probably my favorite. I'm a fan of the simplicity of the rules, yet how complex it can get. It's also one of the few games that I'm consistantly good at.
Chess, Scrabble, and (as Nik metioned and I forgot) Stratego follow in no particular order. Then there's always Scrabbleship ;-)

I'm terrible at Scrabble. No one who knows me can believe it, but it's true. People really expect me to be great at it and often ask me for help when they're playing it, but I'm just awful. So there you have it.
You're not alone! I'm an english and word person, but for some reason suck at scrabble. Everyone thinks I'll beat them but I get clobbered every time. I think I just get so caught up in words that I forget strategy.
I can pretty easily come up with words. I think part of my problem is I come up with too many words, or I fixate on a word I don't have a letter for yet and wait around for it...I can't narrow it all down to thin strategically and pick the right word for the situation. :)

I voted for chess but I haven't played it for years. It has pretty much been replaced by bridge as my nerd game. I probably wouldn't be that good at chess now.
Scrabble is my other choice, it is more social than chess, I love it, and I can still kick ass even if I'm not at my peak any more. For a while in the early eighties Lauren and I played it at least once a week, often more. The best 7-letter scrabble word is bezique. The word I always wanted to make was quixotic. You can theoretically place that so you use two triple word squares on the same turn. That scores 9 times the value of the letters.
People would line up to do that.
It would be tougher but how about quetsalcoatal?
OK then Quetzalcoatalasaurus.
Of course plain old quetzal is pretty good.

not only that, but the X would be doubled. you'd get 356 points (the X alone would be 144 of those). better yet, if the word 'ally' happens to already be on the board and begins one square after the second triple word square, you get 'quixotically', adding another 63 points to your score.
Just to blow your mind then: Super Scrabble. 21x21 board, quadruple letter and quadruple word squares, plus lots more tiles.
Another cool game is Martian Chess. Played on a normal chessboard, but uses Zendo. I haven't played Martian Chess yet.
I made up a weird 4 player varient of chess. Two players play chess the other two designate two secret squares a piece. If a chess piece lands on a secret square it is removed from the board. The player that designated that square then gets to pick another square. The secret square pickers get the standard point value of the piece captured. A king has infinite value. If it falls on the secret square then the player who designated it wins automatically.
i gotcha...DIAGONALLY!
i kick ass at othello. i also like scrabble. and. stuff. You must first create an account to post.
