music school question

   Discussion: music school question
Josh · 20 years ago
hey guys, im looking at schools to study guitar and/or music industry at, i was wondering if anyone here has attended the musicians institute before... i checked it out a little bit and it seems to have a pretty solid bunch of programs that im interested in... anybody know more about it?

it seems like a generic AI-type school, to me. these vary greatly in quality from decent to shitful, so buyer beware.

the faculty looks decent (full of solid session musicians, if that's your bag), the courses seem all right, but I'd be wary. if you have any desire to take classes in any other discipline, you're SOL there.

my father is a musician. he also has a bachelors degree in economics, an MBA, a masters of music, and is a CPA. he's a bit of an overachiever, but everyone I've ever talked to has said that you really need a solid, well-rounded education and a fallback. most musicians have day jobs.

if you want to go the pure music route... if you can get in and can afford it, Berklee is the way to go.

Apparently, he lives in my neighbourhood now. Go figure.

Obviously, he just wants to stalk you. Or your hair. Or something. Just kidding.

Dude. The stylist wanted to put caramel highlights in. I declined because it cost $80, but that would have truly completed the look.

My hair's grown out a bit, so now it only looks Jianesque when I load it up with gel.

lives near you, eh? you might want to hide all of your mp3s. he don't like em!

as it were, that wasn't a canadian 'eh'. i keep forgetting that many many fruheads are, as dave foley put it, 'americans without guns.' har.

looks like they give you a ton of opportunity to accomplish whatever you want...

hey, if i can let me ask another quick question... what do you think about summer workshop sessions... i was reading today that MI is having a weeklong one at the end of june.. u take lessons and workshops from their faculty, and you get to participate in open jams and performances... even throw in a dvd of it for ya.. seems pretty neat...i figure it could be a cool way to check out the place and the area, meet some people, and maybe even learn something!
Bender Back · 19 years, 11 months ago
that sounds like a wise plan.

go for it!
Josh · 19 years, 11 months ago
yeah, i think part of the reason why its so appealing is that they want you to focus 100% on studying music, and there's no liberal arts or general studies classes to take... just music all the time, i like that idea..
