gmail invites

   Discussion: gmail invites
dgodwin · 20 years, 6 months ago
I know we had a poll on gmail a while ago, and some people thought it was creepy.. but I've got 6 invites in case anyone who wants an account doesn't have one. You can either frumessage me or just post here. gmail asks for a first and last name along with a valid email account to receive the invite.

I"ve got 14 to add to the offer. :D

Though I think everyone who wants one by now has one.

perhaps someone could give me a subjective view on the big deal about gmail? i never actually write email, nor have i done so in probably 5 or 6 years, i just use my hotmail account so i can have some sort of online mailing address for various whatevers. using email as an efficient contact medium has been lowered to the snail mail catagory as far as i'm concerned, what with all of the instant messaging protocols available as well as the ability to log conversations. while i might not have a particularly useful reason for getting a gmail address, what IS the deal? is it a matter of spam filtering, storage space, or a whole bunch of things? am i correct in thinking that gmail is more or less email2.0?

Forgive my unneccesary elaboration, but i'm both curious, and (without wanting to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities :-) somewhat up in the clouds..... umm, yeah. thanks!

p.s. i'd go look it up, but that requires me to un-lazy my bad self. yes, typing up these posts probably took longer than researching it myself would have. :-P what can i say, fhdc should buy out google.

For me, it's not just the 2GB of free storage space and really great spam filter (I've been using it for months and so far only one piece of spam has entered my inbox and I've had none of my regular email invade my junk mail box) but it's also the way gmail sorts your email into conversations so that you can see it all like a thread. Plus your email is searchable as well.

i dont have access to any sort of IM, really (except FHDC) - we're not allowed to use it @ work and i use it to communicate with my dad, sister, boyfriend, etc. I don't have internet @ home.

i like the threaded conversations, because sometimes we get into little 1 line convos - i guess i use it like IM sometimes.

like leanne said, the spam filter is excellent.

the best thing about it, imho, is the searchability - the ability to search the text of all your emails.

and while it might seem kind of spam-y, it will take the context of your emails and advertise to you based on that. like if you mention "Nike" in your email, the side will have a link to "buy nike shoes at blahlbahblah.com" - not a huge ad or anything, just a link. i kind of like that, because i do shop online a lot and it reminds me to look around for certain things :P

https://gmail.google.com/

Take the simplicity of yahoo mail, and make it even simpler (amazing that was possible) and you get gmail - google mail.

You must first create an account to post.
