For this site in particular, the lack of "Moxy"-- an odd soda from Maine-- on this poll is lamentable.
It's thick, it's brown, it tastes rather like gummy cola with a chocolately-nutmeggy-clovey aftertaste, but heck-- it's MOXY!
we all know how i feel about diet coke..its sewer water...but anyway...its POP not soda...:)
aHEM!
{pompous&arrogant} It is SODA, thank you very much. That is what we call it in NYC and since NYC is the cultural capital of the United Sates, we are right. {/pompous&arrogant}
West of Syracuse, NY it's Pop.
East of Syracuse, NY it's Soda. That's your SUNY Geography of New York State 206 lesson for today. Now the county that syracuse is in....anyone? anyone?
yay paul!!!!!! :D
I mean, for guessing the county...not for living there. ;) jk! :D
Actually I drink Caffeine Free Diet Coke, not an actual beverage but an incredible simulation.
i don't think synthehol is a ferengi invention... the federation was using it before they had regular dealings with the ferengi, weren't they?

It's old-lady pop, I know... Buyt I like it. It quenches my thirst, and doesn't seem to coat my throat the way the others do. Plus, I can drink a six-pack of it before bed and not spend the night twitching.
Although Coke has much to recommend it, too...
I saw Ginger Ale as a poll choice before I read the question, and I thought of Russell Wolff, especially Track 2 from Roadkill Amerikana, "Ginger Ale"
ok...so ginger ale is the best POP ever invented in the history of man made pops (although sparkling water is quite good too...)...but ya'll forget the best way to enjoy gingerale:
ginger ale with LIME!!!!! it is so good...and take it plain before you accept a lemon substitute...but yah...gingerale in a glass with a couple wedges of lime squeezed in...yummmmmyyyyyyy :):)
Ah, but have you ever had ginger ale with Midori? Mmmm... I prefer lime in my vodka tonic. ;)
...and it's soda in east-central Wisconsin, pop in southern Indiana, and, although I've lived here for three and a half years now, I have no idea what they call it here in St. Louis...

Does such an animal really exist? I've heard of it apocryphally, but never actually seen it.
Celery tonic ("cel-ray") is my favorite. It's what you drink with your kishkeh and pastrami on rye at Grabstein's Kosher Deli. It is the most wonderful thing on God's green earth!
While that is acceptable when I'm at a Kosher Deli it's Dr Brown's Cream Soda. And how could you not mention the good doctor? he makes "cel-ray" too!
Cel-Ray is my dad's fave soda. It does go damn well with kishka. (Kishka is a large sausage bread-pudding kind of thing, made mostly from beef fat. It's also one of my guilty pleasures.)
I had to vote for Root Beer, as Cream Soda was absent from the list. I go for IBC Root Beer-wise.
um... i was, in fact, referring to the good doctor, as he is the only one who makes such a beverage as far as i know.
man, gella, if dr brown's black cherry had been on the poll, i'd'a been all over that drink. :)

Not Coke. Not Pepsi. Diet Pepsi. I think it tastes better than all the other colas. And Diet Coke tastes like ass.
ok...so i'm not really a cola person, but if i had to drink cola (and for those rare occasions when it really is what i want) it HAS to be Diet Pepsi...maybe it's just because that's what i was raised on...but seriously folks...it tastes SO much better than any other variety.

For some reason I can't drink anything carbonated. it just...burns my throat. or if I do I have to alternate a sip of the carbonated stuff with a sip of water. But honey soda from Quebec would be my favourite, if I could drink it with any frequency. mmmm.

Well, for lack of a "Mountain Dew" or "other" option, I went for the root beer. It's my second favorite soda. Must keep my place constantly stocked with cans of Dew and glass bottles of IBC root beer. :)

My REAL favorite soda is lemon. Not lemon-lime, just lemon. Sour! The only probem is that it is very hard to find Lemon Soda in the states. Since there was no "other" option I'll have to say root beer. There should have been an "other" option though (there should always be one) What about spruce beer or birch beer?
Schweppe's makes an absolutely outstanding bitter lemon. ...but I've never seen it on this side of the Atlantic. :P Fresca and Squirt are semi-suitable replacements, although none of the three taste anything alike.

But I can't believe you made me choose! I love root beer and orange and diet coke and pepsi and I could just go on and on.
Oddly, I like diet coke better than coke, but pepsi better than diet pepsi. Go figure.
Sorry, mom. Vernor's is Soda. Perhaps not in spirit, but on the label. :)
I must agree that Vernor's is pop in spirit. It's from Michigan!

and why is there no "None of the Above" option? If I have to drink POP ;-), I prefer Lime Crush. MmmmmLime Crush.
There is no "none of the above" option because I submitted this poll ages ago before this "none of the above" craze started. And because I am an idiot. Yeah.
Also, I misspelled Mr. Pibb. Forgive me.
Hey Gella-
Ever notice that the lettering on Mr. Pibb kind of looks like Hebrew*? I spent way too much time wondering what "zazom" meant when I first encountered the beverage (having grown up in Dr. Pepper country). *in script, for those to whom this means anything: P = mem sofit i = vav b = zion
*giggle* never noticed that... that works quite well! i will from this point forward referr to Mr. Pibb as Zazom!
ok...that is weird...now that you mention it
so yah...a mr. pibb story: there is this pop machine in the house across the street from my house (we don't have a machine in our house)...and earlier this year my roommate and i went over there to get some pop...and one of the girls who lives there told us that the machine was acting funky, but only when you wanted sprite...so first i got my cherry coke (study fuel), and then i put in 50 more cents (yes, cans of pop in minnesota are still 50 cents), and hit the sprite button...and 2 came out...and then the machine relit up again and made noise, so i hit the sprite button, and 2 more came out...and it relit up again...well this happened for a while...eventually the machine ran out of sprites, and when we hit the sprite button we got 2 mr. pibbs...finally someone decided they wanted a coke..and they hit the coke button, and the machine stopped...but not before we had well over a dozen sprites...and a few mr. pibbs (and all for 50 cents)
yay! POP!
I drank diet coke for about 15 years.. and I loved the taste, but after reading up about aspertame and NewtraSweet products...I banished anything "sugar free" from my diet! I noticed that my really bad headaches I had been having went down to so few, I started to fell "well" again for the first time in 15 years, and my failing vision had started to improve! I did the "cold turkey" 3 years ago, and although I loved drinking Diet Coke, I'm so glad I we are healthy again! (oh, and aspertame has a shelf life, so if you don't give it up.. it's really important to check the "best before date" on your POP!) hate to preach, but take a read! http://www.notdoctors.com/aspartame.html ~J~

i can dig the cirtrus/lemon-lime angle, but as a drinker of mainly sprite (the resturant i work for uses coke, not pepsi products), i'm gunna have to object to the grouping of 7up and sprite in the same catagory. i realize that for all intensive purposes of this poll the two drinks would be close together enough to warrant the same grouping, but i think sprite is a heck of a lot better than 7up. ok, that was this year's post from me :)
-The Great Went
in this doggy dog world they never tow the line. it is absolutely sack-religious.
Let's examine the idiom "intents and purposes." Is there a significant difference between the two? They appear to be synonyms. So, why would we use both words, when only one would would suffice? One could argue that it is to emphasize the fact that these plans are definitely the important ones. Indeed, the fact that these are significant plans is intensified. They are, as it turns out, the "intensive purposes."
Another possibility is that the repetitive redundency of "intents and purposes" emphasizes that plans do not always end with one result. There could be myriad endings. Including, perhaps, ending up in Intensive Care. Thus, we arrive at "intensive purposes." You see, students, one merely need employ scholarly techniques to explain just about anything. Now...who put maple syrup on my chair again?
"...the resturant i work for uses coke, not pepsi products...grouping of 7up and sprite..."
7up is not a Pepsi product. If you had to label 7up with a cola, it would be RC...which really doesn't see the light of day in the Coke/Pepsi war...just sits neatly in its own little trench.
i'm not so sure about that... I live on a Pepsi-enslaved campus... in fact Pepsico is across the street and our main auditorium is the Pepsico Theater... and what we have is 7-up. I believe it is a Pepsi product
Nope it's actually not. It was its own thing, then merged with Dr. Pepper...then was bought by Cadbury-Schweppes....and then the name changed to "7-Up/Dr. Pepper company".
Sprite IS a Coke product...so I think the whole thing just happens because Pepsi carrying places sure aren't gonna be carrying a Coke product--Sprite--but people want a lemon-lime beverage option...so they likely license 7-Up in its place. Pepsi DOES own Slice, which you also often see as the Sprite alternative. Why isn't it ALWAYS, in Pepsi places? I don't know...maybe it's a matter of popularity. ramble ramble ramble. :) I much prefer Sprite to 7-Up or Slice. It was all I drank for a while when I was staying away from caffeine. Then I gave in to my love for Mountain Dew and caffeined it up. :)

am i the only one around here who just loooooves dr pepper? come on, people. :D
honestly, I can't taste the difference. Of course I've never had the two together to compare, because when you are in Dr. Pepper country you can't get Mr. Pibb... but when I first met Mr. Pibb and tried him I was like... hey... this is Dr. Pepper!
Actually it is Dr. Pepper's less educated cousin, but why quibble?

okay, when i was travelling this summer I got into this big argument with someone about soda vs. pop. Their argument was that soda can not be what pop is called because soda refers to soda water. I told them that in my part of the world we called that stuff seltzer, unless it was mineral in which case we call it club soda. The other party seemed very unwilling to accept this.
We all know that this is a regional thing. No one is correct or incorrect and I think that we will all readily acknowledge that when you seriously get down to it... but I find it interesting that it is such a matter of pride for Americans, what we call our carbonated beverages. In some parts of the country, all sodas/pops are called "coke" and the question is "what kind of coke do you want?" Which reminds me of randall's rant about band-aids in the cartoon Clerks show. But I digress... Actually, I think I was done. Carry on.

Soda? Pop? Soda pop? Does it matter what it's called, it all tastes like ass anyhow. Well... I did have a religious experiance once when I was 16 by mixing coffee and mountain dew. I did it for the added caffine boost, it didn't work, although after vomiting quite a few times, I was shaky like when you have too much caffine.

Of course, you can only find cheerwine in NC, SC and sometimes southern VA. And I only know 2 stores where they sell diet cherry coke, and they're in NC. Unfortunately, I don't get either that often. Dang
