in relation to the current poll, what's your favourite computer/games console strategygame? (interpret the term as you wish, i guess.)

personally, i go through bouts of sim city 3000 addiction. meep.

Ditto the SC3k addiction. Even when I'm off of it, I'm still a recovering addict, always one CD away from relapse.

yeah. 3k is by far the best simcity game. 4 was SO disappointing.
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I couldn't believe how badly they dropped the ball on 4. So many cool things could have been done. The fact that you still can't draw freeform roads and everything is still on a grid astounds me. And I'd love to be able to drive around in a 3d city. Don't even get me started on the fact that world are divided into those little chunks. Very disappointing indeed.

and that you have to terraform everything manually. you can't just make it auto-terraform a tile. plus, even once you did get started, it was pretty much impossible to start any kind of city without going into tremendous amounts of debt, although I'd imagine that the standard strategy was to provide resources in one tile, then build in the other and make deals and so on. but that seemed so complicated to just get started.

Me too.

Anyone have any good tips on how to make the highway work. No one drives on mine. Such a waste of money.

I've been all about turn-based strategy games on the GBA, recently. They make the commute fly by.

First there was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which was fun; then there was Advance Wars, which was alternately frustratingly hard and too easy. I've been told I need to go for Fire Emblem next.

oh lord. i've been gaming for roughly 20 years (yes, since 2, shh), and i just can't seem to tackle the strategy/rpg genres. i just dont have the mind for strategizing, and rationing my hit points or whatever. there are two kinds of gamers, primarily, which are 1. strategy gamers and 2. hand to eye gamers. i'm a hand to eye gamer. sure, i'll play tetris (and kick your butt :-p), but the real meat of my gaming experience lies in the ability to seperate mind from body and use your controller as an extension of your mind. i think that philosophy is apparent in a fair amount of eastern religions/cultures. that's not to say you can't do such a thing while playing strategy games, but strategy games dont tend to reply on so much realtime reflexes as say... a fighting game with a deep fighting system/engine. i guess rts might be the exception to this rule, but even still, it doesn't tend to deal with split-second realtime, as opposed to turn based strategy games. i suck at command and conquer, but i'll whoop you somethin' solid at say... tekken tag or soul calibur 2. the depth is there, you just have to find it. to me, it is akin to learning an instrument, except that with an instrument you are playing WITH someone else whereas a fight game (just for example) requires you to form your strategy based on your opponent. sure, they have similarities, i.e. freestyle jamming, but that's my point. it all seems to be relative. i hope i made as much sense as i hope i made. :-P i'm sure there are some flaws in my logic here, but for the most part, that is how i see/approach the practice of video games.

I disagree. I'll kick your ass at Advance Wars and Soul Calibur 2 ;-) (I'll even let you pick who I play as ;-) )

"(Why am I abusing italics today?)"

it's "better" than "abusing" "quotes."

No, Definitely The Most Irritating Is Capitalising Every Single Word So That Everything You Write Looks Like It's The TitleOf Something. *Ducks*
Brian Dinsky Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

heh. i tried advance wars a few times back when i still had a gba. really fuckin good game, but i couldn't manage to get terribly far.

that thar be a hefty claim against my SC2 knowledge, but alas, we'll probably never find out. :-) i'm not saying i can't be beaten or anything, but at the very least, i enjoy good competition. i'm much better at tekken tag anyways. we have a machine at school and nobody will play me anymore :-( *cough*49wins*cough*. i eventually had to say fuck it cause standing for three hours sucks balls.

the strategy vs. hand to eye thing is a lot less black and white than i try to make it, but those seem to be, from what i can tell, the primary types of gamers or something. whatever the hell i'm talking about, who knows.

Brian Dinsky Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
oh, heh, i only use charade to keep it fair (against the regulars i play).
Nathan Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I don't really think I'm much of a strategy or hand-eye gamer. Of the two, I prefer the hand-eye games, but I guess I'm more into RPGs like Final Fantasy (not Tactics)and Dragon Warrior, which have SOME element of strategy, but certainly not as much as the SimCity/Civilization type of game.

It's spelled "strategery".

I'm not much of one for those turn-based strategy games... Civilization III is my game of choice. I just never really got into RTS games... (I guess I never had the time).

SImulation games are fun too.
Zach Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Oh man...once you get into a game of CivIII, you're stuck. It's so addictive.
emilie is CRANKY Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
i got hideously addicted to Civnet for a while (eek). it was hella fun, tho. and i learned about history and stuff! :D
Zach Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
yeah, it doesn't help that i'm a history geek. Occasionally I stop in the middle of a turn to look up random facts in the Civilopedia.

i'm not THAT into them (i know if i ever started playing EverQuest my life as i know it would be over) but i really dig FFX and FFXII.
Nik Chaikin Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
