Siriusly great radio
Those of you who get Sirius Satellite radio, either via satellite or online can hear two great DJ's that are New York institutions, Meg Griffin and Vin Scelsa who I generally call the world's greatest DJ. He inspires debate because, how should I put this? He talks a lot. Think of Bernie Muller-Thym, Mike Clem, or Jian. What he says is intelligent and nobody questions his knowledge or taste in music. Here is what he played on his show on 5/9.
These are the songs played on SIRIUS Disorder 24,

Being a Sirius subscriber, I get to hear these people all the time. Meg Griffin also spends some time on Folktown (Stream 38). The Kennedys have a regular show now, from 8 AM - 2 PM ET on Saturday mornings.
Many artists that Fruheads know and love are played on there. Bob Dylan is in heavy rotation. Dar Williams, Lucinda Williams, Warren Zevon, some classic Woody Gutherie, Arlo Gutherie, FRFF showcase artist Terence Martin, FRFF banned Dan Bern, Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Vance Gilbert, Richard Shindell, Joni Mitchell, and so many others.

Richard Thompson, Richie Havens, Janis Ian, Eastmountainsouth....
Vin and Meg turned me on to so many of these people. They both were on WNEW New York's original free-form rock station then both moved to WFUV. They played Fruvous right from the beginning.

... who thought of sirius black when they saw this thread?
too much hp. man. too much.
nah.. that's impossible :) you can never get enough hp.
oh, i did! but then i felt bad. cause when i read hp, calling him sirius just seemed like a ripoff of dogsbody.
(by diana wynne jones, who does much better ya fantasy, but i shouldn't whine: it has been pointed out that she's probably getting better sales because of rowling.)
dogsbody isn't an invention of jones. A dogsbody is a servant as in the Black Adder credits "Baldric a dogsbody." I just came across the term in something else I just saw or read. Of course I can't remember what. Probably Doctor Who.
no, i mean dogsbody, the book. where the main character is a dog as well as the incarnation of sirius, the dog star.
that's how i knew sirius black was also a dog as soon as he was introduced.
but Sirius is the name of Orion's dog, Sirius is the dog star. It has had the canine connection since ancient times. Summer is called "the dog days" because ancients thought that the reason the summer was hot was because the star, Sirius, and the sun, were both in the sky at the same time then.
right, i don't actually believe that rowling ripped off jones' dogsbody let alone witch week (or other things, like gaiman's books of magic). it just reinforces how unrevolutionary all of rowling is if you have read any fantasy at all...
i can't help feeling that she takes advantage of the fact that most of her audience didn't have prior knowledge of fantasy genres in order to be painfully unsubtle... i mean, lupin? siruis? seriously (no pun intended).
on the other hand, i really wonder who supplied her with the aramaic for the "aveda kedavra." i was impressed by that.
(despite my bitching, i do read every harry potter book as it comes out :))
I don't think it is taking advantage, I think they are put in as deliberate references for those with some background. A child probably won't get them, (I would have but I was born a pedant) but the adult reading the book to a kids would. They aren't subtle clues but the books aren't about subtlety.
OK, now I'm defending HP? Has the world gone upside down?
Plus, sometimes the names are so obvious that you don't register them, and get a fun "oh, duh" moment a few weeks later.
Peter Pettigrew anyone?
I agree. I think when she uses elements of traditional lore, she's firmly placing the books inside the cannon. And I think they're stronger than they would be if they didn't have the references.

But: Trivia.
What is the name of Sirius' mascot dog?
Mongo.
me, too...especially since i just finished reading ootp.
When Meg told me she was leaving FUV to do "sirius satellite radio" I pictured it as "serious satellite radio."

and, of course, pete & maura have THEIR folk show, 'Dharma Cafe' on saturdays, too....but i forget what time it's on????? check their website and it'll tellya :) *disclaimer* i KNOW grrrrrrodan knows about it and just figured he had a brain lapse and, hence, dinna mention it ;)
I did know and I actually had reasons for not mentioning them. Not sure what they were though. I think that Paul had already mentioned it. It might also be that I have never heard them while I've listened to Meg an Vin for ages.
