Poll: Have you ever been arrested?

Is driving with a suspended license serious? It is a misdemeanor and I did face jail time. Not much of a chance of that though.

P.S. the charge was dismissed.

well, I'm not sure how serious it is... but... why on earth were you driving on a suspended license?!

That's just dumb... no offense.....

Well, in his defense, in some states, it's possible to have your license suspended without knowing it is.

Particularly if you do something like move without letting the DMV know or something.

Heh. My "privilege to drive" in New York State is suspended right now. They'd have had my actual license suspended, but MI isn't interested in hearing their whining. The reason is that I got a speeding ticket last time I was in Buffalo, and I took a little too long to remember to pay it. I DID send them the money, mind you, before the suspension date and everything, but it seems that they have this little rule that if you miss the first deadline, you have to return to the scene of the crime and pay in person. What? I fucking live in Michingan. I'm not driving to New York to make a payment. So I mailed it anyway, and they didn't cash the check and then sent me a notice that I'd missed the second deadline and that they'd suspended my "priviledge to drive in NY". So NOW I have to pay them an additional 70 bucks (which in my book is still cheaper than driving to Buffalo to pay a ticket.) Why didn't they just impose a penalty after the first deadline and take my money and save us all a lot of trouble?

Figures Masiello would do something to fuck others up. There are tons of articles on how the city police are doing "dumb" things in issuing tickets.

They give parking tickets on weekends when the parking is supposed to be free as well as ticketing people who are making deliveries with official documents to attorneys or the Feds.

I had gotten a totally ridiculous ticket and had the date for the hearing off by a week. The second I missed my appearance my license was automatically suspended without notification.

By the way saying "no offense" makes it no less offensive. It actually makes it more offensive as it shows that it isn't a matter of you not realizing how it might be taken.

ahhh.. yeah, that's the way it works unfortunately.

And...regarding your take on "no offense"... everyone is free to interpret things their own way. *shrugs* But, I actually didn't mean any offense.

Why isn't there an "other" option? I could answer no, but I'd rather be able to elaborate and say that I was seriously questioned once and also was taken into custody by policement at the Governor General's mansion when I was left behind by my parent-chaperone during a field trip.

Well, I did plead guilty to a felony, but was never actually arrested or put in jail...

Does that count?

I started singing that to the cop when i was in the holding cell. When he told me I couldn't have my sweatshirt if hte drawstring was in it. I said, "you don't want no hangin's." Then went into that section of Alice's restaurant and pointed out the similarites to officer Obie, OK that wasn't really his name.

And the flipside of that coin, 'yeah, but I didn't do it'.� Just interesting that most of the positive responses here seem to go along with admissions of guilt while getting arrested and getting convicted are two very different things.

I've been picked up by the police once and had ridden in the back of a police car two other times, and even though the situations weren't great, I committed no crime. Victim! Leah's ALWAYS THE VICTIM!

I rode around in a police car helping them look for some drug dealers. It was a long story.

 leah in a rose sauce and I called the cops when we witnessed an assault. We got the perps' license plate number but they never called us in to testify.

Once about 1967 and twice about 1974. Apart from that, I had a couple of police officers point their revolvers at me about four years ago. All of these incidents seem funny now, but they weren't then.

P.S. There were two other occasions where I should have been arrested, but wasn't.

when i was 15 i got caught stealing a lipstick tester from the Bay (ya i know, I'm lame) and i got escorted to the room where they take juvenile delinquints like me. then the police drove me home. there was no handcuffs or fingerprints or anything, and i still dont know to this day what this could be classsified as. i had my picture taken and i was banned form the bay and zellers for a year. it took me YEARS before i ever felt comfortable in there again.

Technically it does. When you are pulled over by the cops, you are under arrest. Being under arrest means that you are not free to leave, which is the case here. I don't know if I'd include it in this poll, though. :)

Yeah, that was pretty much what I was thinking, too.

Really?� IANAL (or a cop) but I thought that an arrest goes along with Miranda.� Otherwise you're just being detained.� Of course, if our gov't has it their way, no one will every be arrested any more... we'll all just be considered 'persons of interest' and detained indefinitely.

... But i broke a german law tonight.

I danced... in a pub... after midnight on Maundy Thursday.

Because it's technically Good Friday, there's a law against dancing in a public venue. You can still drink, play music, listen to music or even gamble. but dancing. dancing is NOT allowed.

But I danced anyway!!!

And talked an older german fellow, I figure late 50's early 60's, that we met, who happens to also lindy hop, into dancing. for the first time in his life he broke the no dancing law.

I am such a bad influence.

There's a good "bust card" available here at the ACLU Web Site. It gives good, easy advice on your rights when detained or arrested by the police.
