No I will not fix your computer.

Discussion: No I will not fix your computer.

i don't know if it's "prima-donna-ish" or just "elitist bastard" but i know what you mean.

headed out to fix dan's (new) g/f's computer last weekend. apparently it had a virus. start up norton to scan it, about five minutes in explorer crashes with a fatal error and i lose keyboard and mouse. wtf? i let the scan run for five minutes when the screen saver comes on. fuck. reboot, turn off screen saver, start scan. wait the half hour for it to finish, no viruses. i find out then that they've never updated it. argh. reboot, because i have no keyboard/mouse, connect to internet via dial-up (argh) start up norton's live update. takes about a half hour to download everything, then i see that i have to click on a yes box to allow things to install. double-argh. reboot, check to see if it caches the downloaded files. nope. fuck. go into liveupdate, set it up for express mode, so there's no button clicking. five minute window passes, reboot again. start liveupdate, let it finish it's thing. reboot again. start a scan, finds the virus, purges it. a trojan that replaces explorer.exe with a timebombed version, ah, makes sense. now i realize that norton is starting on startup... and it's not hooking into email. look deeper and see that the initial install of norton half-failed because they didn't use the product activation, and because the virus prevented them from clicking on the boxes near the end of the install. uninstall norton, reinstall norton. then liveupdate *again* through dial-up.

anyways, by the end of it i was fairly livid at the world of windows. when's the last time you got a virus in linux that locked your keyboard/mouse? or bsd? hell, even solaris at unbc didn't use to do that (but man did it ever have a shite window manager, urg)

windows makes my brain bleed. i was talking to someone in the last week who mentioned a high-paying access/outlook job. i made the comment that i'd rather flip burgers at mcdonalds. and you know what the strange thing is, with the full medical/dental that mcdonalds offers to full-time workers, and the love that you'd get for being the only person there to understand the till (and be able to program it, no less), i think it really would be a more satisfying job in the end. something to think about ;)

paradoxically i'm using windows a lot more these last few weeks. i blame it on that shite logitech quickcam traveller, remember that cam? takes the shittiest pictures but it takes great video, but it'll only do video connected through USB... which works fine, coz i can do video through MSN and yahoo. strangely, the woman is actually linux-literate, so i've got the 2100cdt all set up running debian so she can run free on it. (and she can even name computers according to the RFC without checking, oh how i love thee annika mine ;)

k, enough rambling, (P.S. you should update your profile or site with some g/f pics)

Gah! Windows. Boo! Hiss!

Sometimes it makes me so angry that I can only splutter incoherently.

And yes, I will put up some pics of the g/f... just as soon as I check with her first.

of course, i'd check with her too. and always remember, double-checking which pictures you post of the g/f could save your life someday ;)
