Poll: Did you lose power? |
Discussion:
Did you lose power?
I just heard that about half of all Con Ed customers got their electricity back.
This poll will of course be skewed till later on as the people without power can't vote.
My cable is still out. I'm just happy earthlink is working.
Well, Jason Reiser logged in last night with no power. :) Rare, yes, but there are probably a few who can honestly choose that option. :) Yeah... the DSL worked until about 2AM at which time I lost all phone lines and the DSL. Battery backup worked great until something seemed to happen at the CO (phone company central office). Power outage: 21 hours Phone & DSL outage: 20 hours and counting...
People near internet cafes or people with UPSes? People with laptops? *shrugs* :)
*brain explodes*
saying UPS power supply doesn't make sense. Uninterruptible Power Supply power supply? internet ISP provider doesn't make sense either. internet internet service provider provider? it's like when people say "hey, give me a second to grab my PIN number and we'll go to the ATM machine"... aiieeeee! Yep! And they're even more plentiful in a group of geeks such as this. :) I logged on last night with my laptop. At 4AM I woke up (that's 4AM in the morning, for those who think this is that "annoying wrong phrases" forum), and there was a smoke alarm going off in my building. Now, I was using candles, and I figured other people were too. But there was absolutely no movement in the building. So, I tried calling one of my neighbors, but there was no answer. After deliberating, I decided to call 911; if there *was* a fire, I didn't want to be the idiot who heard the alarm but didn't do anything. The firefighters came and checked it out - turns out the door to the roof was open. So, all is good. I was freaked out, and started packing a bag and I got the cat carrier out, but everything worked out fine. I got power around 5:30, and haven't put the AC on yet - we're supposed to be conserving. I'll probably go out in a bit and hang out in Riverside Park.

My sister is in Toronto, she doesn't have power yet, and apparently they've been asked to stay at home unless they have a super-important, neccessary job (I'm thinking, hospital, ambulance, fire--that sort of thing)
and then she was also informed that there'd be rolling blackouts for the next few weeks. :p

I live in Saskatchewan. I just watched on TV for a bit. All of you who lost power missed Peter Mansbridge's beard (on CBC)! It was hilarious. Although I didn't watch it for long, 'cause it's like, wow, i'm watching a traffic jam. Whoo-ee.
That's right, CBC had like diaster special coverage, and there's nothing to see 'cause there's no power. Us Canadians need more TV shows.
What I don't get is why last night they said that power would be turned on starting in the north east and moving south and west. According to that plan you should have had power first.
One thing I learned. I'm keeping a collection of lightning bugs for now on.
No they specifically said it would start in Canada.
I talked to my landlord around 7pm and that's when I found out how extensive the outage was.. and stuck anything that could spoil into the freezer part of my fridge, as there was more than enough ice in it to keep stuff for quite a while. So far, so good, and I've eaten stuff that was in there - good thing I've been putting off defrosting the freezer ;)
Yeah, power was out here in Orillia for about the same length. It gradually came on around town over the space of an hour or so. Where I live was about the last spot in town to get power restored.

I just got power back in my apartment in Brooklyn about 30 minutes ago. There was lots of cheering from the neighbors outside when it did come back on. Hopefully, it stays on..*crosses fingers* Though, it was strangely nice to see stars in the night sky walking over the Williamsburg Bridge on the way home last night.
I didn't really have anything to add, I was just trying to test my posting abilities. O:) (Or lack thereof.)

My isp is a Toronto company (well it is now, wasn't when I signed up) and they are still out so I am logged in from the computer in the office of my apartment building. StupidLook.ca bought out my isp and moved all the servers to Ontario. Boggles my mind that anytime I need a DNS or to get a page served to me that it round trips 3000kms. Can't believe that's cost effective. Grrrr, and no 'net for 24 hrs. Oddly enough though, I was able to get on icq (but not AIM) and talk to George.

We lost it at 4:10 ish yesterday and just got it back today at like 3:30. it was so creepy. ive never experienced anything like total darkness in the middle of the night on the street. when it first went out i was napping, and woke up and figured it would come back in in an hour or so. jen You must first create an account to post.
