Me, like most of my family is a quote geek. What are your favorite quotes? If there was ever a day I didn't want to be at work, today is the day. Well, and yesterday. And tomorrow, probably. -Mike MacDonald While you are destroying your mind watching the worthless, brain-rotting drivel on TV, we on the Internet are exchanging, freely and openly, the most uninhibited, intimate and, yes, shocking details about our "CONFIG.SYS" settings. -Dave Barry Why use a big word, when a diminutive one will suffice? - ?? I play it cool and dig all jive, That's the reason I stay alive, My motto, As I live and learn is: Dig and Be Dug In Return. - "Mirror" -- Langston Hughes The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reasons for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. -Edmund Burke The other day, while sitting in a traffic jam, I thought to myself, "Why does this only happen to me?" -Chad Rubey When my girlfriend is mad at me, she refers to me as her "half-ass boyfriend." I get my revenge by referring to her as my "ass-and-a-half girlfriend." - Hugh Ringling
"Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional" - My dad (though I`m sure he stole it from somebody)

I just got this list of quotes today in my email. I thought some of them were pretty good. There weren't any names to go with the quotes, so I don't know who to give credit to. Grr. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead, Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either. Just leave me the hell alone. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and a leaky tire. It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal the neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it. It's a small world. So you gotta use your elbows a lot. We are born naked, wet, and hungry. Then things get worse. No one is listening until you make a mistake. Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else. Never test the depth of the water with both feet. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help. If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple car payments. If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. If you lend someone $20, and you never see that person again, it was probably worth it. If you haven't much education, you must use your brain. Never mess up an apology with an excuse. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your mouth is moving. Anything worth taking seriously is worth making fun of. Diplomacy is the art of saying "good doggie" while looking for a bigger stick. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends? Don't be irreplaceable, if you can't be replaced, you can't be promoted.
How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it.
- The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Part I Section I Chapter I - Adam Smith
Nature and wisdom never are at strife.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

OK, I know it's not really a quote but I just *love* this. It's such a Canadian thing to say:
A truly Canadian Apology to the USA, courtesy of Rick Mercer from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CBC Television:
Hello. I'm Anthony St. George on location here in Washington.
On behalf of Canadians everywhere I'd like to offer an apology to the United States of America. We haven't been getting along very well recently and for that, I am truly sorry. I'm sorry we called George Bush a moron. He is a moron, but it wasn't nice of us to point it out. If it's any consolation, the fact that he's a moron shouldn't reflect poorly on the people of America. After all, it's not like you actually elected him.
I'm sorry about our softwood lumber. Just because we have more trees than you, doesn't give us the right to sell you lumber that's cheaper and better than your own. It would be like if, well, say you had ten times the television audeince we did and you flood our market with great shows, cheaper than we could produce. I know you'd never do that.
I'm sorry we beat you in Olympic hockey. In our defence I guess our excuse would be that our team was much, much, much, much better than yours. As word of apology, please accept all of our NHL teams which, one by one, are going out of business and moving to your fine country.
I'm sorry about our waffling on Iraq. I mean, when you're going up against a crazed dictator, you want to have your friends by your side. I realize it took more than two years before you guys pitched in against Hitler, but that was different. Everyone knew he had weapons.
I'm sorry we burnt down your White House during the War of 1812. I see you've rebuilt it! It's very nice.
I'm sorry for Alan Thicke, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Loverboy, that song from Seriff that ends with a really high-pitched long note. Your beer. I know we had nothing to do with your beer, but we feel your pain.
And finally on behalf of all Canadians, I'm sorry that we're constantly apologizing for things in a passive-aggressive way which is really a thinly veiled criticism. I sincerely hope that you're not upset over this. Because we've seen what you do to countries you get upset with.
For 22 minutes, I'm Anthony St. George, and I'm sorry.
One of the Emcees at Barbershop International read that very letter during the AIC (Association of International Champions) show on July 3rd in Montreal, Canada. Caused quite the debate on the barbershop newsgroup.

If all of scientific knowledge were destroyed and we had only one sentence that we could pass on to the next generation, what do you think that sentence would be?
I believe it is the simple fact that all things are made of atoms. Little particles that move around in constant motion, attracting each other when they are a little distance apart but repelling when being squeezed into one another. O.K.? But if all of life, if a stream of water, can be nothing but a pile of atoms, then I ask you an even more in-ter-esting question: How much more is possible?
Is it possible that this thing walking back and forth in front of you, talking to you, raising and lowering his chalk, is a great glob of these atoms in a very complex arrangement, such that the sheer complexity of it staggers the imagination as to what it can do?
Know that when we say we are a pile of atoms, we do not mean that we are merely a pile of atoms, but a pile of atoms which might well have the possibilities which you see standing before you! - Richard Feynman

The universe is wider than our view of it. (page 285)
Nay be a Columbus to whole new continents and worlds within you, opening new channels, not of trade, but of thought. (page 286)
Sometimes we are inclined to class those who are once-and-a-half-witted with the half-witted, because we appreciate only a third part of their wit. (page 289)
Shall a man go and hang himself because he is of the race of pygmies, and not be the biggest pygmy that he can? Let every one mind his own business, and endeavor to be what he was made. (page 290)
If a man does not keep pace with his companion, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. (page 290) Did you know this was where the quote was from?
However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults evening paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. (page 292)
Money is not required to buy one necessary of the soul. (page 293)
The life in us is like the water in the river. It may rise this year higher than man has ever known it, and flood the parched uplands; even this may be the eventful year, which will drown out all our muskrats. (page 296)

Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed with the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility, what is his humility? Revenge.
