It's not my favorite thing, but when you're a man, it's not as bad as it could be. *shrug*

Using public restrooms might sometimes be grody, but it's way less grody than fouling your pants! :)

no, actually i use public bathrooms. i think i've refused to use a few unspeakably grotty ones in my time, but usually they're clean enough.

Because of my health problems quick access to public bathrooms is often important to me. I'm not happy about many of them so when I'm in the city I make a point of knowing where the nearest acceptable bathroom is. Nothing beats the fine hotels, they are always my first choice.
The one in the Strand bookstore is somewhat grody but used to make up for it with really good graffiti till someone had the bright idea of scrubbing them off the walls. It was the only place I knew where you could find literate scrawlings.
Yeah.. they closed the nicest "sit down" bathroom in noho.
The one at "On the Run" Mobil on King St. It was great.... big and roomy.. nicely air conditioned in the summer.... plants.... even magazines most times. :) I try to avoid using public bathrooms if I can... but when you've gotta go, you've gotta go. Luckily, I now live right downtown. Yes, the fine hotels have the sparkling clean bathrooms.... thats because we have to clean them 600 times a day. in fact, at the old niagara-on-the-lake 5- diamond establishment i used to work at, we were required to throw out toilet paper rools that were less than half finished. that kind of waste sickens me. But i digress.... As someone who previously worked as a maid in four different hotels, i strongly suggest tipping your maid or bathroom attendant! It's disgusting work, and of course we arent allowed to use the nice bathrooms, we were relegated to use the dingy, grody, single toilets in the basement. ICK.

When you gotta go, you gotta go, and you ought to know where you can go. Having wandered NYC so often, I pretty much have a decent idea of where the public restrooms are acceptable or unacceptable. Hotels are typically my first choice, my gym has several locations scattered throughout the city and the facilities are relatively clean, last resort are the fast food places where they don't hassle you to buy something (I once had a security guard stop me in a McDonald's who told me that I needed to buy something before I could wait in line to use the restroom). There was a little guide I bought a few years back of NYC Public Restrooms that included a little history of public toilets. And apparently San Francisco and Seattle have potty guides too, so I guess there is a market for knowing where you can go to go.

... only those surround by a foot of space, and a nice, dense, 6' shrub running all the way around them. That way I can walk side-ways inbetween the outer wall and the shrub!
...It is more pleasing and hygenic to pee *ON* a public restroom than *IN* a public restroom! 8^P that must be true, since every time i find a men's public throne with a target the size of new york, it always appears that more urine has made it onto the seat than in the hole. which is hilarious from a gender that boasts the ability to write their name in the snow ... -= george =- if anyone had said that demolition man was in the list of "worse movies ever" in that forum posting, i would have them keel hauled, stripped, dipped in rubbing alcohol, and dragged across a woolen carpet. i adore that movie. -= george =- You must first create an account to post.
