I have a spider plant at work, and instead of growing to offer me more privacy from snooping bosses and cow-orkers, it's dying. meh.

(oh, and first post)

You should have been honest and chosen the second to last option
*joolee* Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
That was the first thing I thought of.  I have a black thumb of death. MiniJulie, my hate-fern (inspired by How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days), as much as I dote over it, is dying rapidly.  No clue why, but *lament* sure is sad.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 11 months ago
How about I'm about average? I've grown tomatoes well and killed some house plants through neglect.
Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

yeah I was thinking about that...but I liked the "god" option..since "average" is too normal for me!  I would put myself in there though..I have never killed a plant until this year, and it was over 10 years old.. so I was a bit shaken up for a while! (I failed as a mother!!)

heh!

I want to know who the 10 people are going around

without thumbs!

dirty life & times Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
i said that i didn't have thumbs because i've never tried to raise a plant.

i may have thumbs, but i can't see what color they are.
Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

YAY! I just watched that movie!

SAD, but sweet!

If you count aquarium plants. they seem to be the only thing I don't kill. and if they die it is the fishs fault.
Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

heh...I didn't think of a water plant option...

by the by..some old garlic started growing in my fridge, and I planted it with a house plant..did I go too far? (it's still growing....)

I have rescued many a plant from my mother's kitchen window garden of death.  I don't understand people that kill plants, they are sooooo easy to take care of.
emilie is CRANKY · 21 years, 11 months ago

this time last year for some reason i had more money than i knew what to do with :D so i bought some seeds and pots and stuff from some bargain store and planted them, and in a couple weeks i had purty yellow flowers! and rocket! wheeeee! and lobelia! oooh the pretty colours. *dance*

Since I moved to this apartment a bit over a year ago, I've gotten really in to houseplants as well as gardening.

Our apartment is starting to look like a greenhouse now. :D

So yeah, I guess I do pretty well with plants.

It's really fun... every plant has a different personality.. they all like to be treated differently. Some like to go till their soil is bone-dry before a good soaking... and others like regular light waterings, etc. You can just tell when they're happy and when they're not. :)

I can see the bunny Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Well, I don't have many houseplants anymore 'cause every inch of this place seems to be taken up with various forms of music and tons of books. But - I *love* to garden. Puttering around in my herb garden is one of the things I enjoy most this time of the year. :)

yay rosie icon!!!!

teehee

and...um....i have one plant that has -seriously- one leaf....and has had for a while......i bought it the last year we had the theatre to celebrate spring and named it after the title character.

and now i think it just hangs on with that solo leaf to spite me to remind me of the horrible theatre.....yet it -knows- i won't throw it out.......

damned plant........

oi, nate! do you have live plants in with your fishies? :)
nate... Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Heh, actually no. My tank is too small, I think. And I also don't have good enough lighting.
emilie is CRANKY Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
ooooh, you should, even if you have only one, because the fishies like to hide in them and eat them, and they oxygenate the water and they look pretty! wheee! you can get special ones with like pink flowers on them and stuff! :D
Andrea Krause · 21 years, 11 months ago
I have killed every plant I've owned except one. My friend gave it to me with a pot she made me. It's here at my desk and the only reason it's alive is a) it's a hardy ivy and b) I have an Outlook reminder that pops up every day and tells me to water it. :)

Frlie, you insensitive clod, where is the "never mind the green thumb, my black thumb is no match for mother nature" option?

The plants in my backyard are becoming a veritable obstacle course. No matter what I fail to do, the Frangipani ambushes me on my way to the car, the Peppermint tea plant engulfs me with its fragrance, just because I can't pass it without my legs brushing against it, the Bougainvillea tries to dominate not just all of the tiny backyard, but the footpath as well, the Jasmine attempts to throttle the lot, while ferns flourish underneath, oblivious to the struggles above them. The garage roof is covered by creepers that are green for 9 months of the year and display big scarlet flowers for much of that time. To top it off, two palm trees next door play host to squabbling Rosellas and I struggle to keep some climber in check that is intent to hide the front of the old terrace from passers by.

All of this takes place on a property measuring 5 x 30 metres, most of which is covered by my little abode and about 4 kilometres from Sydney's CBD.

Every now and again I try to spoil all this by pointing a water hose at this mess, but it makes no difference, except for the lemon tree, which is rather old, and i'm told, reaching the end of its natural life.
Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

well, a "haunted" garden WILL keep nasty strangers away! heh!

:)

Gordon and Lawrence mentioned the black thumb option missing too.....I am truly insensitive!

Yeah, I can grow plants. It runs in the family. So do plant allergies. Boo Yah. Especially with Rochester, NY right near the top of the allergen charts this week.

Well, we have greenhouses too... it's just not reflected on our cookie-cutter Teleflora page.

here's another reason to hate my mother, zilly, she ALWAYS kills my plants when i go away for vacation. after the begonia incident, i just stopped buying them.

"the begonia incident."  sounds like an indie movie.

HEYYYY!  .... when I gave George that Pointsettia, I never expected it to live beyond Christmas.  Nobody really expects them to live long.  That's why they are cheap and plentiful and don't have an extensive list of "how to care for your plant" instructions.

So the pointsettia - not your fault, George!  *HUGS*

George...when I come next time..I'll bring you a nice plastic plant!

I want a garden, but I live in a third floor apartment.  Particularly, I want an herb garden.  Arbie and I were married in my mother's herb garden.

To make do until the day we have a place where I can have a garden, I have houseplants and potted herbs.  I have an aloe vera plant, two baby spider plants, and potted chocolate mint (which the damn aphids love), parsley, and two other mystery herbs.  They're mystery herbs because they're too young yet for me to identify.  A friend of mine sent me this pack of herb seeds that is supposed to contain parsley, basil, thyme, and chives.  Each seed is on a little cardboard stick; however, none of the sticks are labeled as to which herb is on it.  The parsley and the two mystery herbs came from those unlabeled herb seed sticks.

I'm pretty good with plants, particularly aloes.  My mother always kills aloe vera plants.  I had to leave the aloe plant I had all through college with my mom when I moved to Canada, and she eventually killed it (or her, as I had given that plant a name).  However, my mom has a vegetable garden, an herb garden, and various flower gardens which live quite well.  Maybe because they're outside....

nate... Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
How can you kill aloe??

I had an aloe plant in a kitchen I worked in... it was on a shelf where it got no sunlight.... we left it for 2 months without being watered... came back, and even though the dirt was a solid dry lump around the roots, it was still green and happy.

:D
Back · 21 years, 11 months ago

maybe that's the trick with them!

They thrive on neglect! hah!

~J~

nate... Back · 21 years, 11 months ago
Are we counting? :D

between my housemate and I, we currently have (indoors) 5 variegated spiders, 4 non-variegated, 2 bridal veils, three aloe plants, an umbrella plant, a hedera ivy (which I'm nursing back to health), a hoya plant, a cactus of some kind..

We also have two which I can't yet identify. One is vine-like with purple/green/white variegated leaves, kinda fuzzy... and it grows like mad.

The other is small, and has a large ball in the trunk at dirt level and long whispy leaves that grow at the top.
