Poll: What do you think of MARRIAGE? |
Discussion:
I want to get married.
I just found out that Gavin has a daughter a mere 2 years younger than me.. Pardon me while I go scream and cry hysterically into my pillow -_- however, huzzuh for marriage. I'd love to get married someday. Right now, theres only one person I could picture myself marrying.. and I'm not even technically dating him... it's a long complicated uninteresting story ^_^.
I'd like to share my life with the right guy, someone I have a lot in common with and can be both best friends and lovers with, but I'll be 40 next year, so it's looking pretty grim for me. I'd like to believe I'm a "good catch" (self-supporting, very low maintenance, easygoing, ok looking), but it's hard to maintain that belief when I haven't gotten more than a few tiny nibbles. I'll be happy to have a boyfriend before I die.

When I was growing up, my mom always said, "the best way to ruin a relationship is to get married." I've actually seen it happen, perfectly happy couples who live together for years on end. Their marriages last less than a year. I don't know why it happens, but it does. Point is... the idea of marriage is way better than the practice, IMHO. I have this sick utopian idea that should I ever find someone to settle down with, we'll have a nice little house in the burbs & the 2.5 kids. It's never going to really happen like that though. Bah! I don't know... I just think that Gregory Corso said it best.
I think that marriage in practice is a great thing, when two people get married for the right reasons. Too often people get married either due to lust, or due to societal pressure. And alot of the time, people who live together for years then get married, do not adjust to the reality of marriage and expect things to go on as they always have. Marriage is about teamwork and about being a "unit". I'm not saying each person gives up their identity, but there is some give and take that has to take place. Normally, when I've seen a couple who's lived together for a while get married, they expect nothing to change, that the only difference is a piece of paper and some legal mumbo-jumbo, the reality is far different.
That being said, I do think that couples should live together before they get married. My wife and I lived together for almost 2 years after getting engaged before we got married. It allowed us to work out alot of the specifics of living together under the same roof. But that's not to say marriage is a simple thing, it's a constant effort (but one that isn't a burden), and I think alot of people don't really realize how much work a marriage can be. Of course, the high divorce rate I believe is due to people getting married for the wrong reasons, or not being willing to work through inevitable problems. Our society is too much based on a "cut and run" at the first sign of trouble mentality. Having said all that, marriage is for some people, and simply living and loving together is for others. It's all about what is right for the individuals in that relationship. Me though, I love being married and wouldn't want it any other way.
Wow. You just absolutely solidified my position against marriage. People are always telling me "it's just a piece of paper" but clearly its not.
thanks. ;)

I met her on J-Date, and the thing that made her want to give me a 2nd look was that I had listed Fruvous among the bands I like in my profile.
This means there is hope, Kim. I'm turning 40 in a month, and she's my contemporary, though a bit younger. Whole story on how I proposed is at http:/tinyurl.com/36jzt Lux
That's a very sweet story :) Thanks for sharing. I doubt I'll be that lucky, but you never know, I guess. Good luck to you both!!

Does anyone else think of the Nellie McKay song every time they see this forum?
