Discussion: FHDC's favorite Fruvous song tournament: Nuits de Reve vs. The Drinking Song
John J. Ryan · 17 years, 5 months ago
Nuits de Reve and Fly in the Wood final are locked in a tie, so they'll both be participating the 16-song single-elimination tournament.  Our first battle of tournament is between one of those Wood songs vs. a wild card from Bargainville.

What if we have too many ties?
Josh Woodward Back · 17 years, 5 months ago
For ties, why not do a "first person to make a post with their vote breaks the tie"?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 17 years, 5 months ago
I'm informal an don't like ties. How about cravat?

Naru Jacket?

i was thinking that each song would choose a champion and both would battle it out gladiator style.
derek harrison Back · 17 years, 5 months ago
doing two at a time seems silly to me
John J. Ryan Back · 17 years, 5 months ago

Two at a time is the best way to do this.  When you add other songs into the polls, it can skew the votes when songs start splitting votes.  That's why I'm taking the final 16 songs and doing it single-elimination style.

And Two At A Time is one of my favorite Guster songs.

You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding.
John J. Ryan Back · 17 years, 5 months ago
I'm not kidding.  It really is one of my favs.  What's wrong with Two At A Time?

god... it's a pure throwaway song.

John J. Ryan Back · 17 years, 5 months ago
Perhaps there could be a favorite Guster song tournament later.

I'm down!

Um....it's boring and worthless?
;)

I did this years ago. I was taught by french (european) nuns.

I've always been unhappy with the literal, all but babel fish translations of Nuits de Rêve so went about doing my own. I recently fished it out of my old desk top.

Remembering.... Mike ALWAYS was the one for using allusions.

Nuits de Rêve

Far from wars/fights and the neighborhood [1]
Love was in the air.
The spirited essence, a new dance.
She was naked, I let her be.
Silk sheets in disarray in the bedroom.
Nights of decadence with no reproach.
Do you hear/know how one trembles as if cold, sighs?

Where have they gone, my nights of dreams?
Help me find them again.
You said you would always love me.

At a 100 km an hour, our hearts suffocate.
Ideals/Idealism become(s) unclear.
The clock sounds on every drunken hour
Of lovers entraped.
Silk sheets in disarray in the bedroom.
Nights filled with lost passions.
But one morning she kissed (me) coldly and vanished.

Where have they gone , my nights of dreams?
Help me find them again.
You said you would always love me.

Under the snow, (at) the end of the ride.
My path, lost forever.
My days are hard, I don't have a future anymore.
She left me alone, my hands empty.
Silk sheets abandoned in the bedroom.
Sleepless nights going down alone/to the end.
I search everywhere for you, Going crazy in the alien/foreign crowd.
Where have they gone, my nights of dreams?
Help me find them again.
You said you would always love me.
(Repeat Chorus...)

[1]colloquially accepted as 'credit union' but in this case... literally working class boxes. so, neighborhoods, could even be translated as - working cubicles

*sighs* It's just as beautiful in the English translation.
LizaLS Back · 12 years, 10 months ago

A MUCH better translation than the one floating about, so beautiful. I know this is like responding to a far away echo, but I'm a bit obsessed, and this live version of the song is not helping me be less besotted: http://www.archive.org/details/mfruvous1998-11-06.flac16
