Poll: How many movies do you see in a theatre in a typical month?

Paying $10 to sit in hard chairs with sticky floors (with no pause button for bathroom breaks and no kittycats cuddled in my lap) to watch something that will be out on Netflix in a few months isn't usually my idea of a good time. Plus, TiVo helps insulate me from the current movie hype, since I haven't hardly seen a commercial in 6 years, so there aren't many movies that I have to see. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

The only time I'll see a movie in the theater is when it's something that either demands a huge screen or I want to see before I hear too much about it. For everything else, which is most movies, I wait for Netflix.

The cost isn't unaffordable, it's just not worth it, when for the price of seeing two movies in the theater each month, I can see half a dozen (at least) at home.

I do the netflix thing too.  There are very few movies that attract me by the teaser.. or at least attract me enough to spend $10+ to see it.  Besides, I usually fall asleep during movies and going out to a cinema has the potential of becoming a very expensive nap.

I don't go enough but there is no comparison for me between seeing a film on TV and in a theatre. I like the big screen, the dark room, the audience, and the lack of the distractions you get at home. The phone never rings, I never wander over to my computer to check my email, I'll never pick up a paper or a book. I've paid to see films in theatres that I've seen many times on TV either in revival houses or rereleases.

Really? Where are you seeing movies that some dope's cell phone doesn't go off during the movie?

The other night, I went to see a movie, and not only did the phone of one person in my party ring, she answered it. I was mortified.

unless it's, like, to go with people who are going anyway.... though I did make a few rare exceptions for Serenity.

I don't see any benefit to the theater over home.... only drawbacks.... the big screen is nice, but now that I have my own house, I'm going to set up a home theater in the basement, so there'll no longer be a benefit to paying more money for more distractions and less access to good food. :D

But then again, there have been so few movies out in recent times that I would even like to see in the comfort of my own home. I generally only go to the big blockbuster movies I know will be at least decent.

I usually go to the theater a couple of times a month. I'm into artsy-fartsy pictures, and so now that they're playing here in Duluth, I feel like I need to go see them when I can.

That said, I agree with everyone who cited Netflix above. I'm on the 6-at-a-time plan, and that's how I see most of the movies I see. But it's just a different experience to see it in the theater than at home.

Yeah, it's an experience that involves other people, which is sometimes trouble; but I think it's largely worth the risk.

Six?!! Is that the magic number you need to get so that you're guaranteed to be able to watch one movie every day?

Six isn't magic, it is perfect.

::shrug:: It's one of those deals where I started out at three, and have kinda slowly moved up from there.

I have a nice system set up. I pop a DVD from Netflix in my computer, run it through DVD Decrypter to rip a raw image, then use DVD Shrink to shrink it down to 4GB, re-encode it, and burn it. Two quick steps, and it even keeps the menus intact.

It works like a charm; I always have a big cache of movies I want to see. Of course I destroy my backups after I've watched them. ;-)
