Ajaxified Front-Page Wall
Posted by: Josh Woodward on Tue, Mar 14, 2006
Help me test out a new wall feature - click the "Config" button underneath it on the front page, and turn on the updating for the front-page wall. It will transparently refresh every 5 seconds. Hopefully. Please report any bugs. :)
Moving the poster-date-time information makes the wall harder to read. It works for the wall archive because of the wider window, but inside the frame it's too cluttered.
I switched back over, but I wouldn't be too helpful with the evaluation anyway. The wall's usually dead when I'm on... a five second refresh wouldn't show any changes. A twenty minute refresh might, but I wouldn't bet on that either.
I agree with the date/time stuff. It's awkward where it is. Right now, no chatter going on but I'll put it on again when the wall's moving and see.
Thirded on the date/time.
On the plus side, am I crazy, or does the new main-page wall run more smoothly than the streaming powerwall? Over dial-up, I tend to prefer the refresh-based wall (I'll admit that part of that is that I prefer to have the current text in the middle, not bottom, of the screen), but the new main page wall runs fine.
Fourthed on the date/time.
I think it's also just a formatting thing in general. Before, you could easily scan each line since the text was bold which stood out, there was an italicized link beneath it, and then some white space to separate each entry.
Now it all just runs together in a big mess. Couldn't the formatting be kept the same? Since the Power Wall shows more entries, there doesn't seem to be a great need to have the front page show more entries than it did before.
The new formatting is in place as a way to have a powerwall-like thing on the front page. To maximize context, more posts in the same amount of space was the goal. I'm planning to standardize the formatting across all walls to something compact and simple, so I want to make sure I get this right.
I made a couple small tweaks to the layout - is it more readable now?
I still find it too cramped and not as easy to read as the regular wall.
because it automatically updates, I am more inclined to keep it active in my window, and then when I see that someone has commented, I can go comment too. me likes it.
Yeah I like it too. My question for Josh is....is it like the powerwall in that it spikes usage that would...uh...alert the techies at work? :) (Not that I would ever do anything as irresponsible as do FHDC from work.)
I can't seem to make any difference with the post number. It seems to stay the same no matter what number I use.
Yeah I think there's too many lines in the AJAX window... But it works nicely!
Can we also AJAX the Who's On list? :-)
This morning, when I post anything to the wall with the refreshy ajax thing on, it ignores my text and just posts "Message" on the wall. I can only post real stuff if I turn it off back to normal wall.
You must first create an account to post.
