Poll: What film would you vote for Best Picture?

What do you think of the Oscar nominations? If you don't know what they are look the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences website I'm totally shocked and angry that Walk the Line wasn't nominated for best pic. I think it will go down as a classic. It was my favorite film of the year by a big margin.

Ditto. This is the first year I can remember in which I saw NONE of the Best Picture nominees.

Clearly, "conventional wisdom" has no idea how the Academy operates.

Any method of buying votes would have had to be massive and in complete violation of the rules of the Academy, which many people take seriously.

From Regulation 1 regarding screenings:

The Academy encourages the screening of eligible films in a theatrical setting for its members. However, nothing may be given out to the Academy members at such screenings except for a simple listing of the film�s credits. Such screenings must not be accompanied by receptions, buffets or other refreshments, nor should such screenings be accompanied by any kind of live participation by anyone associated with the film. Screenings containing such additional components that are intended for the general public or other non-Academy audience must not be promoted to the Academy membership.

There are similar rules regarding things sent via mail and e-mail, even dictating the thickness of paper inserts.

It is also prohibited to call Academy members to promote your film.

Additionally, from Regulation 16, regarding smear campaigns:

Ads, mailings, websites or any other forms of campaign communication that attempt to promote a particular film or achievement by casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film or achievement are not permitted. In particular, any campaign tactic that singles out "the competition" by name or title is expressly forbidden.


There are 5,808 members of the Academy. Most of them, as I said, take this seriously. If there were dirty dealings going on, especially from a man with a reputation like Steven Spielberg's, it would have been news.

I'm never the target demographic. That's a good thing when it comes to target shooting.

I haven't seen any of them, so I'm not voting. I'm totally clueless about movies and tv... which may be a good thing or a bad thing. Heh.

Wow. I've seen four of the five best picture nominees. This is like a record year for me.

So far I've only seen Good Night and Good Luck. Who else wants to call it Good Night and Good News?

I plan on seeing Capote tomorrow. I not voting till then.

My father and grandfather were all hepped up about the soundtrack to Good Night and Good Luck. I had been meaning to borrow that CD, this just reminded me. :)

I've only seen two, Brokeback Mountain and Crash, but Crash was just WONDERFUL. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. It's one of those profound dramas that you are kinda going, "Whoa. What just HAPPENED there?" afterwards. All of the performances are ridiculously strong, and there are parts that make you laugh, parts that make you cry, parts that shock you and parts (one part in particular) that make you go "AAH!" and almost cover your eyes and start crying but then everything's okay and you cry anyway because you were so scared and then so...

...I babble. Anyway, Crash. If you haven't seen it, it's out on DVD now and it's the most powerful movie of the year, in my opinion. It really gets to the heart of fears and racism. It's just... wow.

Brokeback Mountain didn't impress me THAT much. I left it kinda feeling, "meh" but Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhall were like WHOA with their acting. Actually, ALL the main characters were good with their acting. You have to give them props... they were all pretty much teenybopper movie people until they got into this movie. And this was definitely a good chance for Anne Hathaway to break out of the "I'm a prissy princess" role. I'm sad that she didn't get a nod for anything, but Michele Williams definitely was amazing too, so I think I'd have to go for her for the Oscar nomination.

I've heard such polar opinions on Crash...some who loved it as much as you do, some who think it was manipulative, oversimplified, overrated, etc. It's weird I never hear middle of the road responses. :)

Word. I think all I saw was HP4, Chronicles of Narnia, and King Kong. How is that possible?

And you probably saw more than that, but they were way forgettable, so you don't remember seeing them.

Yeah, I've heard those opinions on Crash as well.

I was blown away by it on the first go. Absolutely overwhelmed, thought it was wonderful. But it didn't stand up so well to repeated viewings, which is a big thing for me.

If anything Brokeback Mountain got better over the course of the three times I saw it, so that's why I'm voting for it. Even though I haven't seen the other three. *is a bad movie geek*

Now that I saw it I'm voting for Capote. If it were nominated I'd still vote for Walk the Line. The only other nominee I've seen is Good Night and Good News. All three films are based on fact and take place in the 50s and 60s.
