Explain the Scam

   Discussion: Explain the Scam
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 19 years, 5 months ago
I got this email today and I don't understand it.
I'm sure it is a scam but I can't figure out what they hope to gain by it.
They have my email address do they want my address and phone number?
Why? My photo? That seems even less likely.

Get your personal data to file for falsified passports?

I believe at a later stage in the "application" they ask for you to pay for the privelege of the part.

419 Scam?

I got the Nigerian scam way back before it was well known. I actually got it by snail mail. I made a trip down to the postal police to report it.

i dont know what a 419 scam is either, but i immediately figured it had something to do with NW Ohio, since that's a major area code there :D

Note that the fax is a Seattle number, while the letter claims to come from England. Also, there are some weird phrases that most native speakers wouldn't say,
like "We will acknowledge your altruistic effort and appreciate your recognition," and "Failure to oblige.." Definitely a scam.

I actually think these things are interesting & save all the ones I get. I have a folder in my mail client labeled "Nigerian Scams & Phishing."

Maybe the whole idea is to overwhelm some poor fax machine in Seattle. I did a reverse phone number look up of the number but it wasn't listed.

Yeah - they tell you that you have free tickets to Cedar Point, but you need to give them your SSN and bank account # to get them....

I think you should fax them a head shot... of your butt. I bet they'll still respond with an offer.

419: the section of the Nigerian criminal code-type-thingy that addresses Advance Fee Fraud. BTW, the US Secret Service does collect 419 emails for "datamining purposes."

Just google "419 scam" for all kinds of interesting info. My favourite is the guy who strings the scammers along for weeks on end. I wish I could remember the address for it.
