Worst.. brackets.. ever!
I think I'm in the 27-47 bracket, not counting airplane layovers.
I tried to make the brackets meaningful - it's entirely possible (and likely) that people have visited only the states on the same side of the Mississippi River that they live on. There are 26 east, and 22 west, not counting Alaska and Hawaii.
So 27-47 means you've crossed the Mississippi. (yes, I know it's an arbitrary division.)

I was just thinking about this yesterday, and counted them up. For some reason I thought I was still under half, but I'm in the 27-47 range. There aren't that many more that I'm hoping to visit.
countries, now that's another story, there are tons on my 'would like to visit' list. :)

Everything east of the Mississippi, plus 6 west, and only sort of on a few of those. When in Kansas City, MO, we deliberately drove across to Kansas City, KS for breakfast, so we could say we'd been to Kansas. Similarly, when staying in northeast Texas, we drove up across the Oklahoma border.
Of course, I'll eventually take a driving trip to 48 capitals. (hopefully sooner rather than later)

48+ the one I live in... this of course includes driving through states on the way to other places.
Maybe Hawaii someday.
Same here. It was refreshing to choose the "I'm too good for these options" option. :-)

most of it is thanks to a big road trip I took once. I lasted about 6 months.

If "visited" means the state has to have been a destination, not just a point along the way on a road trip, then 21. If we're counting any state I've been in, 27 (actually, maybe a couple more, I'm not sure about airport stops, only drive-throughs).
I decided to vote 21 just to be safe. My mom has been to all 50, her siblings all had a competition to see who could get to every state first. Her brother won by driving to Alaska from San Fransico, then turning right around and coming back. :) haha.... my mom tried to drive me to the main part of Alaska a couple of times but kept getting stopped by forest fires, so we'd re-route (one yearthat meant we got to see some serious ash from Mt. St. Helens)... so finally, when I was ending my high school years, we ended up going to the little tail of Alaska that just hangs down- just the very tip of the state so we could say we'd been there. we stayed there in the border town, Hyder, and had fun in the small town environment there and also seeing some gorgeous glaciers in northern BC.

what if we've only been to one state but we come from canada or some other country? gee whizz! you only gave the one state option if it was our home state

Almost half!! I'm counting just driving through (and CT and WV I am not tooo sure i have been there or not), but I don't count layovers. Like, especially if I never got off the plane.
My friend said that if you went to the bathroom in a state it counted as being there. So if I peed in the michigan airport, I guess I was in Michigan . . . . hmm, 25.

How many states were there when this poll first went up? 48? 46?
Just, wait a little while they'll be adding a star for Iraq in no time.
In 1969, when I was 12, I worked on primary campaign of Norman Mailer. He was running for mayor of New York, Jimmy Breslin was his running mate. Their big issue was that the NYC should secede from New York State and become the 51st state. Their Slogan was, "Mailer, Breslin, and the 51st state.
I had no idea what you were talking about till I saw my typo.
Yes the issue was that NYC should secede since it would then succeed and the rest of the state would fail. These comments are going to seem strange since I'm editing my original post.

Let's see...ME, NH, VT, RI, CT, MA, NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA, WV, OH, NC, GA, FL, KY, IN, MN, MO, OK, TX, NM, AZ, CA, OR, WA, AK....and DC. So 28 states and one district.
No room for any of the territories, huh? American Samoa gets no respect (and no trip from me...yet). You must first create an account to post.
