The Simpsons

   Discussion: The Simpsons

I was watching the simpsons from Sunday, and at the end, when they're on the Turkish freighter and taking hashish, this song called "Istanbul, Not Constanople" comes on, right before the RV guy sings a reprise of "I've Been Everywhere." isn't that song from somewhere? Istanbul, i mean. i remember hearing of it somewhere...and i thought it was here. possibly. i could be wrong.

i agree completely!!
haha i was so excited when i saw that episode cause i LOVE both of those songs so much.

TMBG sings it, but it isn't a TMBG song. It is much older. I have a 78 RPM recording of the Four Lads doing it that is presumably from the 40's or very early 50s.

Dude. The version of "I've Been Everywhere" that they played at the end of the Simpsons was done by Johnny Cash, a.k.a. Space Coyote. I imagine they would have wanted him to do the Simpsonized version during the episode, except that he's dead and all. It was recently featured ina commercial for some hotel chain.

It's also in radio spots for Chicago Transit Authority. I kept expecting a litany of Blue line stops. :-)

ha ha, i just saw that episode.

Istanbul (not Constantinople) was originally done by The Four Lads in the 1950s, then was covered by They Might Be Giants sometime in the early 80s.

i wonder if the people they showed playing it were TMBG or The Four Lads...
how many people are in TMBG? because i don't think there were four people singing, although lisa was playing the sax. i'll watch it again.

I saw the episode. It was the TMBG version that they played. I don't think the people they drew were supposed to be from either band. Just random musicians. FWIW, you can download it here via bit torrent: http://www.btefnet.net/

is the version with the long organ & trumpet duetintro the Four Lads?

A.J. Back · 19 years, 11 months ago
The four lads one has a long intro, but I think it is probably trumpet and clarinet. I'd have to listen to know for sure

cool. thanks. and you never know who they'll have on there... it's a good song. i like it.

ha. way ahead of you. my friend sam insisted i torrent it after i missed it on sunday. so now i have it to view at leisure. :)

who did the version that was on there? it's my favorite version but i never knew who it was by. i heard the tmbg version (the one that has a long organ/trumpet section at the beginning) and this other version which i assumed was just a later version by tmbg, but i'd like to be sure.
A.J. Back · 19 years, 11 months ago
The TMBG version is much much faster.
A.J. Back · 19 years, 11 months ago

I discovered Moxy because of my fellow tmbg fans back in 99... 6 years ago.. ouch... and I discovered tmbg on Tiny Toons when I was in 6th Grade, which was like 1000 years ago.. "1000 Years Old" is on tmbg's John Henry album... trivial goodness
