Poll: Would you ever consider plastic surgery?

I had a very painful conversation with one of my younger coworkers yesterday about cosmetic surgery... she was saying she wanted it cause she felt she was "shaped funny." I'm not the person who should be stuck telling another girl to "love your body." Thankfully another coworker jumped in and saved me.

Reconstructive, yes. Elective cosmetic, no.

if i was in a horribly disfiguring accident, i'm quite certain i'd want plastic surgery.

recreationally, it seems like a bad & a wrong thing, but i'm pretty openminded about specific instances, so i won't say across the board "no" there either.

I wouldn't consider any "enhancements", as such...like implants of various sorts or nose jobs or any of that. But I can't say I wouldn't take action to fix what gravity and yo-yo weight have broken if I had the disposable income. :)

Is dental work concdered plastic sergery?

I guess I'd probably say it depends on whether it's for cosmetic reasons only. Like, putting a nice looking crown on after a root canal you needed? not so much just cosmetic.

"Plastic surgery" isn't purley for cosmetic purposes though. Removing cancerous lesions from the skin is still considered "plastic surgery"

I know...and it was talked about int he other poll we had on this subject. :) But we were talking about teeth, and that's why I brought in talking about "cosmetic". If you're fixing a tooth problem and as a side effect you're going to put on a nicer looking version of the teeth, I don't really see that as cosmetic because you're in there to fix an actual problem (comparable to your lesions). I don't think anyone would label that even loosely as "plastic surgery" even though when you're away from teeth you might use PS to mean both cosmetic and reconstructive. But if you're changing your teeth just to have prettier teeth...then yeah, I'd put that into the "plastic surgery" realm.

I know it doesn't make a ton of sense, semantically...It's just how it comes up in my brain when I think of the variations.

hm - dictionary says plastic surgerys is "Surgery to remodel, repair, or restore body parts, especially by the transfer of tissue."

i would probably add the word "elective" in there but sometimes plastic surgery is reconstructive as well.

i would say, in my opinion, any elective surgery that is not repairing an injury or sickness is considered plastic surgery.

so i guess, it would be if you were, say, getting porcelain veneers, it might be.

Plastic Surgery does not need to be elective. After a major accident it is often neccessary. Many plastic surgeons primarily do that kind of work rather than the nip and tucks that we usually think about.

that's why i said sometimes it's reconstructive. meaning, it's not always elective.
