but it doesn't do anything for me. I'd prefer by far -ahem- real fanfic I mean with a plot :D
Samantha Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Slash isn't always only about sex. I've read quite a few series that are mostly plot, and little sex. Some slash is geared towards ONLY sex,yes.. but that's mostly just scene-slash. It really depends on the writer.
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
I've read quite a few series that are mostly plot, and little sex

I'd read these, too. I only don't like it when it's overdone. And it's as you pointed out clearly writer dependant.

the first slash i ever read was in college, my friend forwarded me a story someone had sent of GROVER AND MARIA from sesame street and i was like OMG WHO THINKS OF GROVER AS NAKED "ew."

i've read more now, that does not include the phrase "blue, furry member" and while it doesn't do much for me, i don't mind it and can't say i object to it at all :P

I think there are some people who are so into 'slash for its own sake' that they'll force really really bad pairings into really horrible stories.

Otherwise, I don't specifically have a problem with the idea, but I think that at times it can be a bit overdone. I'd much rather read a good story, regardless of who gets together in it.

Not really a fan of fanfic in general. Slash even less so. I don't have objections as such, but it does kinda give me the willies. Don't know why. But I don't HATE it....I just don't have that kind of passion for it. So I fall somewhere between "I don't read it but don't have objections" and "hate it", not really fitting either.
renita Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
i'm almost exactly opposite. :)

i enjoy it, but mostly i just read the stuff that people i know write.

there are a few exceptions to that, some really well written stuff that they really love.

so i voted for "i love it". but really i'm somewhere between that and "i read it when i'm bored"

Samantha · 20 years, 2 months ago
I like slash. I read it almost daily. Mostly though, because my friends all write it. Frlie being one of them. My friend Kerry, whom I met through her.. almost daily.. and friends I've gained through friends. Slash is great, if written properly. Yes, theres certain pairings that just.. shouldn't be.. [i.e, Grover and Maria, Tigger and Curious George/Piglet]...

but, all in all.. it's great. Sometimes what's out of the norm makes for the best stories.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
TIGGER AND CURIOUS GEORGE?!?!??! Oh god, there go all my happy childhood memories.

Of course, if the goal of a particular piece of writing is to be overly squickful, then maybe that's not such a terrible thing. (although I don't think the Colin Creevey/Mad-Eye Moody one I heard about was written with that in mind)

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
That is a great film and it led to my learning about Slash. The friend that told me about it was part of a Velvet Goldmine online slash community.
Songbill Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Okay, this is all very funny. I meant to say "Velvet Revolver," not "Velvet Goldmine," referring to the band that Slash is in. I actually, until now, had no idea what this other slash was all about.
· 20 years, 2 months ago

I picked addicted...mostly because it's true.

Last Summer I got a lj account, and started to make a few friends through some of Fruheads who had already flown over to live journal.

I first got into reading Harry Potter fanfiction, because I really loved seeing what people could come up with, and I just adored the HP universe. A close fruhead friend of mine mentioned a few communities and authors I should check out, and many of them turned out to be fics with slash pairings. (girl/girl, boy/boy)

At first, I was blown away by the variety, and the quality of the writing. The recs I were given were amazing, and you could really tell that the authors really cared aboutthe characters andwriting in the 'spirit' of canon, while playing around with the pairings.I was soaking up everything from drabbles (100 word stories) to novel length fics. I was soooooooo hooked. I was reading Harry/Neville, Lucius/Snape, Ginny/Hermione...but I kept coming back to Harry/Draco.

Then, never having written anything except poetry and songs, I opened up Word, and started writing Amalgam. It started out as a little gift for another one of my Fruhead slashers, and has turned into a HUGE multi-chapter fic that is now up for an award! Gah!

Most people tend to think that slash is just porn without plot (andthat does happen) butit's not the bulk of what I read orwrite. In fact, I wrote for a full yearbefore I even came close to producinganything R rated. I really just love to write, and the HP fandom has given me encouragement, support and has challenged me to never stop learning about my skills. I write slash, but I also write het and general character fics as well. For me, it's about the characters and the universe, not what gender the main couple is.

Truth is, my writing is something I do just for me. If people want to read it, fine, if not, that's ok too. If f you want some Slash for beginners, ask me, and I'll direct you to some great recs that were first recomened to me when I was a newbie.

Some of the most talented slash writers I know live among us here at FHDC, did you know that? I could name names, but I won't.)

*hugs*

~J~

The guitar playing genius of Guns and Roses. Realized he was a god amoungst guitarists, formed Slash's Snake Pit, and then formed yet another band with several members of the old GNR, as well as Scott Weiland and made Velvet Revolver.....errr wait are we talking about the same slash?...crap.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Just wanted to note that while am with you on being somewhat uncomfortable with slash...I think it's QUITE a stretch to peg it as being by bad writers. :) It's just not our thing...but from what I understand there's some really great writing. (And yeah, I know you were joking around but felt I had to stick up for the slashy little guy. :) )

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
i really wish people weren't approaching this poll with the mindset that everyone on fhdc is "just going to snark [at them] anyway." melinda and jaci, you both write gorgeous fic, and i read it when i can (which is rarely, because i do most of my online nonsense at work, and i really don't want anyone looking over my shoulder and seeing pr0n). the only thing that makes me sad about slash is seeing people i care about apologizing for writing about your own lives instead of fandom, or worrying yourselves to tears about fic deadlines, or being hurt by fandom drama. and i have to confess, i feel very very distant sometimes from my fandom friends because i'm not part of that whole world. but that's just me.
renita Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
i don't like to see them upset either...

but to put it in perspective, your songwriting group. in the past you've gotten upset over whether something was good enough, or if you should go, or feel like you can't go because you didn't write something new.

you get hurt by the "instructor guy"

it's the same sort of thing, although it's for fun, it's something they've made a commitment to, and people are counting on some of this stuff coming in at a certain time. hence the stress.

if someone was creating drama within your singing group, and it centred around you, would you be hurt?
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
ummm...i think you're missing my point.

my point is that i hate seeing people i love get hurt. i never said that it was something stupid for them to get hurt over. i never said i didn't know why they felt hurt or upset. i'm not asking for anyone to put it in perspective for me, especially not in a weird accusatory way with gratuitous quotation marks. i'm getting a strong sense of condescension in your comment here, and i really don't appreciate it.
renita Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
i think that the post does belittle the reactions described, not directly, but that's how i read it. if someone had made a post like that about how involved and worked up i get over politics in the swing community, i would have felt like they were indirectly saying that it was stupid for me to do so.

the quotation marks were because i know that the guy i was talking about wasn't exactly an instructor, or at least not to my understanding of it, but i didn't know what else to call him. i do not think that they are, in that case, gratuitous.
Bender Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
But there's a difference.

There *is* a difference between real-world and internet-based obligations. (With an exception for people who contact work through the internet)

Carey pays for that class. She is hoping to use it to help start her musical career. If she misses a class, she's wasting money and possibly missing out on valuable information.

If someone misses a fic deadline, no one really loses out.

I know people who won't do anything on the internet if it doesn't either amuse them or make them money.

Internet drama is avoidable. If you don't like somebody, you block them. There is absolutely no reason to stress over something that's supposed to be for idle amusement.
renita Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
i disagree.

one: the primary reason people are involved with fanfic is that it amuses them.

two: once i have made a commitment to do something, i do it or do my very best to make it happen. it does not matter whether it is in real life, or on line. my word is my word. while not everyone lives by this rule. i do. and many people i know do.

when you sign up for a fic exchange, you are going to get something on the condition that you provide something for someone else. if you fail to uphold your end, the whole interaction starts to fall apart.

I don't know what slash is. Because I am more often than not a master of bad/awful jokes, I pulled one of the Gnr Guitarist. what is slash?
meh Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Traditionally, slash is fanfiction involving a homosexual relationship (often between characters who are not homosexual in the canon source of said fanfic). Depending on where one encounters the term, it's sometimes used more broadly to mean any fic that uses pairings that are not "canon." (Although I've only rarely seen that use of the term.)

As nearly as anyone has been able to trace the evolution of the term, it originated out of Kirk/Spock fics - way back in the days when there wasn't a 'net, and fic was only really seen in fanzines.

There's a website with a fairly complete history of the term (at least until it spread to other fandoms - I think that happened within a minute of the first ST slash appearing online, personally) - I could try to dig up the URL if anyone is interested.

ETA - in fanfic that originates from anime fandoms, the term is usually Yoai (hope I've spelled that right) or Yuri (for slash and femslash, respectively) - IIRC. I'm really not much of an anime fan. However, their useage has now spilled over too, and the terms are interchangeable in many
