Women

   Discussion: Women
Kris 'engaged' Bedient · 20 years, 3 months ago

What do you think about women being able to do everything men can do?

I know in the military, women can't serve in combat formations.Do you think that's reasonable?

And just because you're allowed to do anything, women, are there still some things you wouldn't want to do because of danger orfor other reasons?

Men, are there some jobs you think women shouldn't be allowed to perform, and fo what reasons?

dave "buh" Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
or, see this link.

Why shouldn't women serve in combat? I know they can kick (my) ass, why not let them fight in the army?
Pacho Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
it seems to me that the navy prefers to use women divers in submarines as women are better able to handle that then men (i.e. smaller bodies, better able to multitask, better handling under stress, etc.)

of course, that just be michael crichton lying to me... damn you and your sphere too
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
I feel very strongly that women should not be allowed to be sperm donors.
Alan Mendelsohn Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Amen.
Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
I think if a person is able to meet the requirements of the job and are the most qualified then they should be able to do the job without regard to gender, race, creed, or color.

There are some jobs that most women cannot do, just as there are some jobs that most men cannot do. That doesn't mean that there are not exceptions.

What I disagree with is softening the requirements of a job to allow women or whoever to do it. If you are able to hump a 80 pound pack around, fire a full automatic machine gun, and beat the shit out of people who are determined to kill you, then you should be allowed to be in combat.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
they hump 80 pound packs in combat? the army is weird.
Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Sometimes for 3 to four hours.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
clearly, it's all about stamina, not just chromosomes.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

heh - well. i agree with starfox that if you're able to do something you should be able to do it.

what i hate is the "Girls can't throw" type stuff. f that.

i get a lot of "you must be stupid because you're a girl and a blonde there's no way you can code or possibly know what you're doing." *fume*

Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
There are few things sexier than a woman who knows regex. :)
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

is it still sexy if they havent really memorized it, and uses a chart for some things? :P

....maybe it's just sexy that i know how to use them.

Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
I don't really know anyone who has memorized ALL regex. I know the major ones that I use quite frequently, but other than that I need a cheat sheet too.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

i needed a cheat *program* (called "Expresso") toget the "see if this is a valid IP" one :P

(?<First>[01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])\.
(?<Second>[01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])\.
(?<Third>[01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])\.
(?<Fourth>[01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])(?x)

o.O sorreee!!! i fixed.
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
My boss at Yahoo! was the guy who wrote the book on regex. I know for a fact that he could recite every function backwards in his sleep.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

holy crap o.O

my boss wrote some chapters in a CCIE training book, but that's the limitations to my working-with-geek-authors-ness :P

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Dude, you were sleeping with your boss?
Pacho Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
i was going to get all anal and be like "wrote *a* book on regex, you mean"

of course, then i noticed it was an o'reilly book.

so objection withdrawn. the use of *the* is definately justified.
Pacho Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
of course, the problem with memorizing regex is that there are so many different syntaxes for regex. i.e. pure math, perl regexs, POSIX regexs, the regexs used in vim/sed, PHP's regexs, etc etc etc.

perl regexs are half the reason that i started loving perl, however they are in no way similar in terms of what you can express to pure math regexs. perl regexs can do backtracking, for example, /(\d+)\d+$1/ to match things like 1234531412345. a pure math regex can't match that, barring extending the machine to allow backtracking or similar change-your-assumptions-to-solve-the-problem solutions.
Pacho Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
"girls can't throw" is like saying "guys can't sew"
seems true in general, there are exceptions though

i'll spare you the doggerel

somehow i always seem to be the one carrying the garbage out though... i'm sure it's not because women *can't* though, they're just smarter
sheryls Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

hee - my boyfriend just takes the garbage out, i never asked him to.

he does the dishes too. <3. (not all the time tho. we share.)

Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
I tend to usually do the laundry and take the trash out. My wife and I split the dishes (whoever doesn't cook, cleans). And I usually vaccum and clean the bathroom. But then I'm an anal-retentive engineer that enjoys making order where there was only mess. :) But my wife is a bit of a neat freak too, so we get along well.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Absolutely not. No one should be excluded from a job (or activity) specifically on account of sex. Anything should be open to whoever is capable of doing it and willing to do it, and since it can't be generalised that there are any things that all women can or can't do, or that all men can or can't do, sex should not be a factor when making that decision.
Starfox Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Well, I don't think we'll be seeing any men being surrogate mothers. ;)

There are *some* things that NO man or woman can do.
renita Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
what about that movie with ahnold?

HE did it.

you're just too much of a girlie-man to carry a chold to term

;-)
nate... · 20 years, 3 months ago
It's just common knowledge that women are only good for cooking, cleaning and making babies.

Duh.

Pacho Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
i always thought women needed help making babies... maybe i missed that part of family life ;)

unrelated note, and i've said this a million times so excuse me if you're read it already, it's the sperm that determines gender given that all female eggs carry the X chromosome by default (barring chromosomal corruption or mutation), ergo if lesbians could reproduce with two eggs they would always produce women, which presumably would/could be lesbian, making it self-perpetuating genetically speaking.
iPauley Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Kindamaybesorta on the topic of self-perpetuating ('cause this really isn't, but... you'll see, read on)...

I remember reading a little blurb in the old Scholastic News back in fifth grade (this would be 1990-91 -- who feels old now? ;)) about women as combat pilots. It noted the fact that, of course, gender is determined by the chromosomes in the sperm cells.

However, something amusing it mentioned in a sidebar was that spending time under the high G-forces that sometimes come from tight turns in fighter aircraft can actually influence the ratio of Y-chromosome sperm to X-chromosome sperm in such a way that they are more likely to father female children than male... perhaps increasing the number of girls who will someday want to be a fighter pilot like Daddy was. :)

i don't know about anyone else, but *my* babies spring fully formed from my head.
Zach Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Isn't that why Hephaestus was so fugly?
Bender Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Actually, Hephaestus became crippled when he was thrown from the top of Mt. Olypmpus.

Athena sprang fully-grown from her father's head because Zeus had swallowed her mother. She was too intelligent for him to bear, so he challenged her to a shape-shifting contest, and when she became a fly, he swallowed her. She then lived in his head and advised him.

Go figure.

God, I'm insufferable.
Zach Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
From what I remember, Hephaestus was horribly disfigured because Hera gave birth to him out of jealousy of Athena's birth. When she saw how hideous he was, she chucked him off of Mt. Olympus.
Bender Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
From what I remember, Zeus did it because he was pissed at him for something.

Then again, there are many different versions of every myth ever, so.
Zach Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Silly myths. Heh.

When I was little, I said to my uncle, "Women can do any job men can!"

He said to me, "Except peeing on walls."

Discuss.

renita Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
not true.

women can pee standing up.

i have done so. at falcon ridge.

i used the little urinal on the side of the porta potty because i didn't feel like hovering.

i think i'll leave it at that :D
Wintress · 20 years, 3 months ago
(Or maybe 1.5 cents...)

As a woman, I find the whole "you can't do that because you're a woman..." thing old. I get a bit upset about it, too.

But, realistically, there ARE some things women can't do. Pee on a wall comes readily to mind. (Thanks, btw.) Or, perhaps, it's because we've been trained to believe it. I'm drawing a blank right now..hm..as to what, exactly, those things are.

One thing that keeps coming up in my gender class: "what does gender have to do with changing oil?" Curious question, that, since some 99%+ of mechanics are men. Are we trained to believe that men work on cars? I, for one, am a bit perturbed to realize that I have a personal philosophy that "if I have the jumper cables, there will come a man brave enough to use them, should my car require jumping."

As "independent" as I claim to be, I truly believe that. (And, yes, actually, it does make me mad to think and believe that. Surely, I should be more independent..)

I think, too, that it's unfair to lump one gender altogether and state that {this gender} shouldn't do {this.} Perhaps women WOULD be effective in combat situations. Or men stay-at-home-homemakers. Or women brokers. Or men as daycare owners.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

Raising a boy-child in a female house reveals some interesting things. #1-(some) boys are just drawn to cars as soon as they learn that they exist. It's very strange.

As much as women <i>can</i> do most anything men can, women don't do things in the same way men do. I think men have an easier time communicating with other men, while women have an easier time communicating with other women, because we think along the same lines.

I always used to wish I could pee standing up. It would make things so much easier in terms of camping.

Wintress Back · 20 years, 3 months ago

yes. Twice.

I distinctly remember being jealous that boys could pee standing up. (Granted, that was before I discovered that women can have {*facetious statement here edited for sensitive persons on fhcd*} That made it all worthwhile. :D

nate... Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
hey, some guys can too. :)

Psht. Speak for yourself. I've never understood women.
Wintress Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
just WHAT would be the fun? er..point. ;)
mim · 20 years, 3 months ago
...was to have the kind of adventures that Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn had. WHat did the girls do? Get lost, sit crying, and do nothing. WTF, mate. Not cool.

As far as physical stuff goes... women have to work harder to achieve the same level of fitness men do simply b/c of gender-specific chemical makeup. It doesn't mean we can't do what men can do, it just means we have to work much harder to get there and maintain it. *shrug* It's also an attitude thing.

But the extra work is SO worth it when you can kick some serious butt. :D
