.......is the BEST pizza topping.
EVER.
and they're best with either onions or pepperoni.
or both.
yum.
actually, at Rosies where i used to work, Fresh Garlic is a topping - that in one of their FAMOUS strombolis with ground beef...........holy crap, it's heaven in a roll of fattening goodness.
mushrooms are of the devil. nasty rubbery things. zucchini, however, especially batter dipped, is the best topping ever. broccoli's good too, but only on white pizza.
Mushrooms are evil, it made me get chinneese at Shellcon! Ellen was right behind me!
FRESH mushrooms arent rubbery. pizza places that use them from a can or jar have rubbery mushrooms on pizza. but fresh ones curl up and get tender. yum. YUM.
I grew up with my mom making pizza with FRESH mushrooms cos the rest of the family loved them and trying to coax me to eat them. No matter what you do to them, mushrooms are rubbery. Plus, in my opinion at least, they stink enough to gag a goat.
Yup you got it! My dad makes pizza with Fresh Mushrooms and they definitely are NOT rubbery.
The stuff you buy in the cans and put them on pizza, is rubbery unless you go to a good pizza place that uses fresh mushrooms, but those are few and far between.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
while just plain fresh mushrooms rock.... grilled portabellas, sliced up........ mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
yay mushrooms!
no no no. i like mushrooms from a can. the more rubbery the better. fresh mushrooms shrivel up and ick. betsy rocks the canned mushrooms.
I may be the only one who can get with you on that. I actually like both. It tends to be a rule that I like fresh ones in salads and other cold scenarios, and I like the rubbery canned ones for pizzas and such. :)
<crestfallen> Do I know you?!?!?!? </crestfallen>
Well why do ya think I have 6 cans of 'em in the pantry?? I can't help it, I love them. :)
i love the stupid little canned chinese mushrooms that have the funky hood on the top of 'em. straw mushrooms i think they're called. i know they're awful, but it's like velveeta, you just can't go wrong.
LOVE straw mushrooms in a can. So chompy. :) :) And I love Velveeta. I'm lowbrow and proud of it! :) Paul scoffs at me because I like American cheese. Ptui!
yes. mushrooms. and anchovies. and prosciutto. especially on white pizza.

who doesn't like velveeta?! and cheese in a can! theres nothing quite like cheese thats more cheese food than dairy product!!
MMMMMMM.....
Mushrooms are definitly the best topping. (Either fresh or from a can, they both have their strong points)
Onions are good, Green Peppers are great.
Where is this Rosies you speak of? I think I need to get some garlic pizza, soon :D
it's in toledo. i'll let you and lacy know - get the stromboli. it comes with pizza sauce. it's...AMAZING. it's covered in this..maaah, i'm drooling hang on.
*cleans self off*
ok. it's covered in this amazing butter-garlic sauce and they make their pizza/spaghetti sauce fresh at a warehouse every morning and truck it out to the 5 restaurants. it's. so. good. and oman, their crust is...amazing.
(all this talk of pizza makes me wanna break my diet ;)

yeah... I like mushrooms and caramalized onions! :)
*drool*

I agree! Where's the mushroom option?!?! That's the only topping I like!

Mushrooms are yummy, but best pizza topping ever is Pineapple, mushroom and jalepeno's
ellen
· 22 years, 5 months ago
I second that! Not that I'm much of a pizza fan to begin with, but pineapple is Definetly Wrong.
oh, it's soooooooooooo good. especially with bacon.
most people put it with ham but i prefer bacon to ham.
or pinapple and pepperoni.
yuuuuuuuuum. :D i'm a big sweet-and-salty fan.
I like pepperoni but I don't see the other most common toppings listed. Where are mushroom, sausage, and anchovie?
amen, brotha!
for me, it's mushrooms, olives, feta, sausage.....
mmmmmm
or, lately, due to the garden producing TOO MUCH fresh tomatoes..... I just slice fresh ripe tomatoes really thin.... use those to cover the pizza crust instead of sauce (don't worry, they create the sauce) and then top with cheese, fresh basil leaves (whole) and feta/olives/etc from there.
Though, I love pesto as a pizza sauce too..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
:)
Have to agree on the feta!
Chicken and feta topped pizza is my favorite these days. Had one at my wedding, too. :)
Ya know, I like feta, but not in as large qunatities that it needs to be a pizza topping. Maybe if it were added on top of the regular cheese though...
hmmmm..
it is on top of the regular cheese some places. like in cleveland, Capitan Tony's makes a Gyro pizza, with the gyro sauce instead of pizza sauce, then lamb, purple onion, tomato, and feta on top of mozzerella.
Oh that is what I mean. I somehow always take for granted that a pizza includes mozarella cheese, although I realize that not everyone does include this ingredient. But yeah, the feta is a topping OVER the mozz. :)
I *adore* feta. And they finally put it back on the dining hall salad bar, so I'm a happy camper. To get to the point though, feta + pesto + pizza=delicious! :)

For me, ham and mushroom (or better yet, ham and double mushroom) is pizza heaven :)
I was going to pick olives because all my life I've always had olive and mushroom pizzas most often...but lately I've been in love with pizzas with artichoke hearts on them. Especially this white pizza we make at home with artichokes, garlic, sliced tomatoes, mushrooms, mozzarella, and romano. Yummmm. (I'm forgetting something. I always forget something. I just know it's my favorite pizza ever!)
-AK
(I also love chicken on pizzas. Chicken and artichoke hearts are a great combo. :) )
That's FRESH Mushrooms, Folks!!!!!
Oh, and you forgot Olive Oil!!!! lots of drizzled Olive Oil!!!!!
i love artichoke hearts too! although, i get picky with them, they need to be fresh. the ones that are stored in vinegar or whatever the preservative is, are way too sour and dead tasting.
but for me the most important element is the sauce. i'm a tomato sauce devotee myself. the perfect sauce for me is soft, sweet, slightly chunky, abundant, mildly spiced with basil or oregano, and lightly onioned. the only place i've ever been where they got it right is Mio Vicino in the San Jose, CA area. in fact, they have the best pizza in the universe, including the big soft crusts and light but flavorful cheese. *drool* :-)
Heheh wonder if my California-born boy has ever been there? Wonder if he'll come back and read? :)
I will take the referral under advisement. :) Hope to be in NoCal sometime soon!
Ya know what sauce I always liked?
The garlic-butter stuff they had instead of tomato on the cheese pizza in my old dorm. (For the BGSU people out there, I'm talking about the sundial).
As greasy as it was (well, it's school food) it made really good saturday-breakfast food. Two slices of garlic-cheese pizza, and a cup of burnt coffee.
That's my freshman year, right there!
i never had that! however, speaking of garlic butter stuff, i must recommend for anyone in a 1,000 mile radius to get in their cars right now and drive to bowling green to go to Pollyeyes. the pizza is okay, but the breadsticks are the best foodstuffs in the universe. just get a single order for two people (they're huge, and you get 6), with garlic butter and ranch dressing for dipping in. you'll walk out way full and happier than you've ever been. and for $5 you can't beat it. they also have stuffed breadsticks, the chicken and cheese are a local favorite.
Please note, that is is the sole reason josh and i put on any pounds in college.
because we ate these nightly at one point. :)
BUTTERY STICKS OF *LOVE* :)
If you take away the mushrooms, that sounds like heaven to me!
olives. GREEN olives are the thing for me.
also, i love feta, chicken, and yes, pineapple which is not evil.
I love green olives as well but not *often*...usually when I crave them I eat them out of the jar. :) But once in a while on pizza is good too.
Feta, no...pineapple, no. :) I hate pineapple *anyway*, but putting it on pizza grosses me out even more. :)
The other night I made a "pizza" that consisted of a crust, some olive oil, homemade mashed potatoes (with the skins in) spread across the crust, liberal application of pieces of cooked bacon, and a mix of mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top. Mmmmmm. :)
Where is a category for "all of the above"? I want olives, green pepper, red pepper, mushrooms, broccoli, spinach, onions, pineapple, artichokes, and maybe meat......
pepperoni, green peppers, and extra cheese. why do i have to pick just one? :)
oh, and pineapple is *not* wrong. pineapple is wonderfully right. of course, i don't think i know anyone else who agrees with me.
Dessert belongs *after* the meal - not on it. :) I'm all for hopping on the bandwagon of loads of mushrooms -portabellos are the best! Extra cheese and ham too please. Yum.
dude, what about dessert pizza? yum!
*flashbacks to selling joe corbi's pizza kits in high school band and eating way, way too much dessert pizza...mmmmmm...*
Although I have heard of such a thing, we don't do dessert pizza in Orillia. I wouldn't know where to find one even if I wanted to. I personally think it's an oxymoron. :)
Actually, just about everyone I know in this city agrees with you, and considers me a freak for thinking them wrong ;)
i am totally pro pineapple. yum! not at all wrong.
what?
everyone around here knows what a Hawaiian pizza is.....
(ham and pineapple)
it's pretty good!
Not my fav.. but lean towards the mediterranean pizza toppings. :)
Err...... "but *I* lean...."
*shakes head*
mediterranean--artichoke hearts (yay andrea!) and olives and other yummy med-y things
pineapple--no ham, just pineapple. yum.
more creative--pineapple, gorgonzola, and walnuts. TRY IT!--SO FREAKING GOOD!
yummmmmpizza :)
Ok, by now we all know my stance on pineapple, but gorgonzola and walnuts sound really good on pizza! I think that the general combination of nuts and cheese is highly understated.
I've never had artichoke hearts on pizza before. I'm sure I could find them around here though...
very much so!
Actually, any form of cooked pineapple is Evil and Wrong. It's a great raw snack, but the second it's been heated, it just turns demonic.
Besides, cheese and pineapple should never mix, cooked or not.
well, i'm absolutely addicted to pineapple that's been sitting on Baked Virginia ham for a few hours... but strangely enough, I don't like pineapple on pizza, its just... wrong...
and Grilled Pineapple... *happy dance*
But cottage cheese with pinapple rocks the casbah! I eat that for breakfast on a daily basis!

My personal favorite:
Buffalo Chicken Pizza.
While there's some variations in how it's done around here, it is primarily a pizza that uses a wing sauce for it's sauce (and no, it's not slathered on like at some pizza places), cooked chicken that is marinated in the wing sauce (and cut into small pieces), with both bleu cheese and mozzarella.
Some variations I've seen are to use cut chicken fingers, another is to use the real crumbly bleu cheese, and a third is to also add sweet pepper rings.
All I can say is: Yum.
I can't believe that no one has mentioned broccoli yet!
Expecialy when combined with mushrooms, it's one of the best unlikely pizza toppings around!
(and it's even better if you go someplace where you can get it with about an inch's worth of cheese. You won't eat again for a week, but it's worth it!)
mushrooms *gack!* ok.. now that i've weighed in on that. here in PA, Pizza Outlet makes honestly the best Chicken & Broccoli white pizza i've ever had... hands down. if there's a Pizza Outlet near you, get one. Of course my favourite was Pierogi pizza from the place I worked at in high school (which closed right after i moved out of town. coincidence, i don't think so!) it's crust covered w/ garlic butter, potato & onion pierogi filling, cheddar & jack cheese, diced onions & diced bacon. it was artery-clogging goodness that sat like a brick. i could eat a couple pieces in the afternoon & not eat again until the next day. *sniffle* i miss that pizza.
oh you ppl don't know what you are missing. pineapple and banana pepper is the best combo ever...its sweet its hot its yummy goodness!

oh yeah... and... er ... hubbahubba!
Am I the only one who's got Mike Ford singing this in my head?
.oO Love those olives. Here in Grand Rapids Oo.
(and for the record, I love Salad Pizza!)
Um...yes? (In Sir Didymus voice)
My dad used to bring home Taco pizza from a local place. It had tomato sauce, but also taco meat, tomato chunks, tortilla chip pieces, and lettuce and mexican cheese blends. It was OK except when the chips got soggy...and the lettuce sucked because it gets so limp. Ah well!
What goes on pizza depends on where you get the pizza from. There are so many different kinds of pizza here in NYC, oh yes there are, and every pizza place has its own style and its own culture.
At Cafe Viva I like my pizza with goat cheese. As long as it has goat cheese I'm happy. At a place like Sal & Carmines I need spinach and/or canned rubbery mushrooms.
But if you're going to V&T's... oh baby... black olives, eggplant, fresh mushrooms, anchovies.
Of course, in general for generic pizza purposes, I like any veggies... Shrooms, garlic, onions, peppers, hot peppers, olives, eggplant, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes... and anchovies.
But no french fries. In Spain they put french fries on pizza and what is UP with that??
oooooooooo... chevre on pizza is the tits, definitely.
mmmmmmmmm ... so good!
I have NEVER heard of french fries on pizza... but then again, until I was in ireland I had never heard of cooking a beef patty, then battering and deep frying it... and serving it on a bun as a "fried hamburger"
So hey, to each his/her own.
:)

you know it!!
;-)
Man, am I the only one who wants cheese and just cheese?! All this other junk (esp MUSHROOMS, YUK!) are inferior. :)
Gah!
Just........ GAH!
Do you also eat just straight tofu out of the box?
Or, eat your toast without butter, just dry?
ick
Perfect Pizza = Pepperoni, Sausage, Ham, Black Olives, Mushrooms, Green Bell Peppers, Extra Cheese, and Roasted Onions. *drool* now I'm hungry...
Hot green chile. Goes very well with pepperoni or pineapple. And it burns on the way down. MMmmmm.
