   Discussion: Astronomical Announcement
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 4 months ago
There is going to be a total lunar eclipse visible from North America and Western Europe on Wednesday October 27. Totality starts at 10:23 EDST and ends at 11:45. For the full schedule go Here

I thought maybe you meant an announcement of astronomical proportions. Like maybe you and Jian settled your differences on Thornhill and are getting married. :)

Would I break Murray's heart like that?

Full schedule? Who's the opening act and what time do they go on?
sheryls Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
well, 9, but they'll probably go onmore like 10:30, knowing them. :P
lawrence Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
bah. I suppose that's ok. I've seen lunar eclipses a zillion times before. Now I just go for the people.

As one of my friend's father, who is an astronomer, said about Star Parties, "There are lots of amazing things in the heavens, but nothing really compares to a good trash fire."

I love that.

It is cloudy, I can't see the moon.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
it's pretty and dark and red

I snapped a total of 41 shots of the eclipse... I'm sorting through the good ones, and may look for space to post some online. Keep an eye out.

but i almost missed it, because i was expecting it to be at around 10-ish... but i'm on the west coast, so it was at around 7ish.

*facepalm* ah well, i still saw it. mmm pretty!

I saw it out on Navy Pier here in Chicago... hardly anyone there. There WERE some hyper girls walking around and one was all excited and one didn't even know what an eclipse WAS (WOW, I mean, they were at least teenagers if not early 20s). She said "Whaaaat's happening?" So my boyfriend told her the SUN was passign between us and the moon... hahaha.... "no child left behind." Indeed!

Years ago I went out to my sister's house on Long Island with my friend and her telescope. My sister's boyfriend, asked us, "What causes a lunar eclipse? Whe we told him that it was the earth passing between the moon and the sun my sister said, "They came here with a telescope, did you think they wouldn't know?" He thought that it was the sun passing between the earth and the moon and that, that was a reasonable explanation and that we might think that too. He was no unintelligent or uneducated, he was going for his PhD in English Lit. He was simply ignorant about basic science.

I've always wondered... is "facepalm" like "napalm"?

...Just a question.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 3 months ago
The last two mornings there has been a spectacular conjunction of the moon, Venus and Mars. They are all in close proximity in the Eastern sky shortly before dawn. Tomorrow morning the moon will be a bit further away but it should still be worth looking if you are awake.
Bender Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
o/~ Venus kissed the moon tonight... o/~

i saw that on monday morning (around 4:30am) here.

i meant to look it up and see exactly what it was, but forgot.

yah, so. so. so. cool.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
Why were you up so early?
renita Back · 20 years, 3 months ago
good question.

because i work a bakery shift on weekends.
so saturday/sunday i'm awake at 3:30 at work by 4.

so sunday night i was asleep by 7/7:30, woke up at 4am monday, nothin' to do so i went for a walk to a 24 hour coffee shop. i figure i was on the road by 4:30/45 or so, i got to the coffee shop just before 6. (it's a long way--with a hill)

that's basically it.

surprisingly it was a GREAT DAY. really really good, though i was dead tired by 8 or so.
