lyrics to the song you're listening to right now?

MAROON 5

"Through With You"

Can you see me
Floating above your head
As you lay in bed
Thinking about everything
That you did not do
Cause saying I love you
Has nothing to do with meaning it

And I don't trust you
Cause every time you're here
Your intentions are unclear
I spend every hour waiting for a phone call
That I know will never come
I used to think you were the one
Now I'm sick of thinking anything at all

You ain't ever coming back to me
That's not how things were supposed to be
You take my hand just to give it back
No other lover has ever done that

Do you remember
The way we used to melt
Do you remember how it felt
When I touched you
Oh cause I remember very well

And how long has it been
Since someone you let in
Has given what I gave to you

And at night when you sleep
Do you dream I would be there
Just for a minute or two do you?

You ain't ever coming back to me
That's not how things were supposed to be
You take my hand just to give it back
No other lover has ever done that

Heartache heartache I just have so much
A simple love with a complex touch
There is nothing you can say or do
I called to let you know I'm through with you

They hung a sign up in our town,
if you live it up you won't live it down
so she left Monte Rio son
just like a bullet leaves a gun
With the charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
she went and took that California trip
well the moon was gold her hair like wind
she said don't look back just come on Jim
You Gotta
Hold on Hold on, You gotta hold on
Take my hand, standin right here you gotta hold on
Well he gave her a dime store watch
and a ring made from a spoon
everyones lookin for someone to blame
if you share my bed you share my name
well go ahead and call the cops
you don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
she said baby I sill love you
sometimes theres nothing left to do
Oh, You Gotta
Hold on, Hold on, You gotta hold on
Take my hand, standin right here you gotta hold on
Well God Bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
how I wish you were still here with me
Oh you build it up and wreck it down
then you burn your mansion to the ground
oh theres nothing left to keep you here
when your falling behind and it's a big blue world
Oh, You Gotta
Hold on, Hold on, You gotta hold on
Take my hand, standin right here you gotta hold on
Down by the Riverside Motel
It's 10 below and falling
By the ninety-nine cents store
she closed her eyes and started swaying
but its so hard to dance that way
when it's cold and theres no music
Well your out of town so far away
But inside your head there's a record playing
a song called
Hold On, Hold On, Baby gotta hold on,
take my hand, standin right there you gotta hold on
You gotta Hold On, Hold On, girl you gotta hold on
take my hand, standin right here, You Gotta Hold On
Hold On,
Hold On,
Hold On,...

Amazingly enough, that happens to be the very song I'm listening to right now as well.

I saw Kris Delmhorst last night and she opened with it, after which I went over to the iTMS and bought "Mule Variations." What was your excuse? :-)
Rimbo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Mmmm. Love that song. Love Tom. Good album.
Nick Collins Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
My sisters boyfriend first turned me onto Tom Waits when he got me a copy of "Rain Dogs", which I still adore beyond belief, then I got "Mule Variations", because it was reffered to me as one of his best. I recently purchased his first album "Closing Time", which blew me away, his voice is completely different, can anybody fill me in? Was it a stylistic choice for Tom to alter his voice, did he smoke too much, or did he injured his voice, or something? (Not that I prefer either voice, I am just curious)
Rimbo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'm not really sure. Once on NPR I heard some REALLY early Tom, and I was surprised at how different he sounded. The whole feel was different, more . . . listener-friendly? Really folky rather than jazzy. Sorry, that wasn't much of an answer, just felt the need to comment.
Nick Collins Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
comments are just as welcome, I love talking Tom Waits :o)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
from what i've heard, it was a stylistic thing. but i think smoking too much probably had an effect as well.

Drink up, baby.
Stay up all night
The things you could do
you won't, but you might
The potential you'll be
that you'll never see,
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
and forget all about
the pressure of days
Do what I say
and I'll make you okay
and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before
that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby. Look at the stars.
I'll kiss you again between the bars
where I'm seeing you, there
with your hands in the air
waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time
and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart deep in my heart
separate from the rest,
where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before
that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

She had that Camarillo brillo
Flamin' out along her head,
I mean her Mendocino bean-o
By where some bugs had made it red

She ruled the Toads of the Short Forest
And every newt in Idaho
And every cricket who had chorused
By the bush in Buffalo

She said she was
A Magic Mama
And she could throw a mean Tarot
And carried on without a comma
That she was someone I should know

She had a snake for a pet
And an amulet
And she was breeding a dwarf
But she wasn't done yet
She had gray-green skin
A doll with a pin
I told her she was awright
But I couldn't come in
(I couldn't come in right then . . . )

And so she wandered
Through the door-way
Just like a shadow from the tomb
She said her stereo was four-way
An' I'd just love it in her room

Well, I was born
To have adventure
So I just followed up the steps
Right past her fuming incense stencher
To where she hung her castanets

She stripped away
Her rancid poncho
An' laid out naked by the door
We did it till we were unconscio
An' it was useless any more

She had a snake for a pet
And an amulet
And she was breeding a dwarf
But she wasn't done yet
She had gray-green skin
A doll with a pin
I told her she was awright
But I couldn't come in
(actually, I was very busy then)

And so she wandered
Through the door-way
Just like a shadow from the tomb
She said her stereo was four-way
An' I'd just love it in her room

Well, I was born
To have adventure
So I just followed up the steps
Right past her fuming incense stencher
To where she hung her castanets

She said she was
A Magic Mama
And she could throw a mean Tarot
And carried on without a comma
That she was someone I should know

(Is that a real poncho . . . I mean
Is that a Mexican poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
Hmmm . . . no foolin' . . . )

My poor secret shadow
How long have you walked
Obscured in the dark of my shade?
You were born right behind me
Like a dog on a chain
Watching all the mistakes I have made

When one tired candle
Makes a cavern of my room
And the ashtray spills over on the page
You flicker above me
Like a swollen balloon
In the wrought iron fiction of your cage

And it's a long time 'til morning reconfines you
In the bright golden fetters of the day
When you will walk on behind me
Like a dog on a chain
Watching all the mistakes I have made

My poor secret shadow
You are older than me
You are old as the debts I haven't paid
Yet, you follow me blindly
Like a dog on a chain
After all the mistakes I have made

CHOKE YOU OUT

I'd like to put this another way but there's better things I could do today
- like sit and stare at nothing at all.
Maybe smoke until my face is gray or watch my record player play
- so loud I can't hear your call
And any song will do, play me anything. As long as it's one I've never heard you sing

I hated you just as much in summertime,
the weather does not change my mind it just makes me hot and bothered
It's a simple emotion, you can't do without.
It's a simpler notion just to let you go and choke you out.

There must be someone else that you can show how fast your lovely mouth can go
- I think I'd rather talk to myself.
I could sit around and pretend to care, or picture you in underwear
- but that can't be much good for my health
And anyone will do, give me anyone. As long as it's not someone you've seen or done.

I hated you just as much in summertime,
the weather does not change my mind it just makes me hot and bothered
It's a simple emotion, you can't do without.
It's a simpler notion just to let you go and choke you out.

Look at all you've done, see now I'm beaten and you've won and now
(I hate you, I really hate you)
And after everything we've done I can't believe you're not the one
(and now I hate you, I really hate you)

I hated you just as much in summertime,
the weather does not change my mind it just makes me hot and bothered
It's a simple emotion, you can't do without.
It's a simpler notion just to let you go and choke you out.
I hated you just as much in summertime,
the weather does not change my mind it just makes me hot and bothered
It's a simple emotion, you can't do without.
It's a simpler notion just to let you go and choke you out.

It's a perfect day for letting go
For setting fire to bridges
Boats
And other dreary worlds, you know
Let's get happy
It's a perfect day for making out
To wake up with a smile
Without a doubt
To burst, grin, giggle, bliss, skip, jump, sing, and shout
Let's get happy

"But it's much too late," you say,
"For doing this now
We should have done it then."
Well it just goes to show
How wrong you can be
And how you really should know
That it's never too late
To get up and go

It's a perfect day for kiss and swell
For rip-zipping button-popping kiss and, well
There's loads of other stuff can make you yell
Let's get happy
It's a perfect day for doing the unstuck
For dancing like you can't hear the beat
And you don't give a further thought
To things like feet
Let's get happy

"But it's much too late," you say,
"For doing this now
We should have done it then."
Well it just goes to show
How wrong you can be
And how you really should know
That it's never too late
To get up and go

Kick out the gloom
Kick out the blues
Tear out the pages with all the bad news
Pull down the mirrors and pull down the walls
Tear up the stairs and tear up the floors
Just burn down the house
Burn down the street
Turn everything red and the beat is complete
With the sound of your world
Going up in the fire
It's a perfect day to throw back your head
And kiss it all goodbye

It's a perfect day for getting wild
Forgetting all your worries
Life
And everything that makes you cry
Let's get happy
It's a perfect day for dreams come true
For thinking big
And doing anything you want to do
Let's get happy

"But it's much too late," you say
"For doing this now
We should have done it then."
Well it just goes to show
How wrong you can be
And how you really should know
That it's never too late
To get up and go

Kick out the gloom
Kick out the blues
Tear out the pages with all the bad news
Pull down the mirrors and pull down the walls
Tear up the stairs and tear up the floors
Oh just burn down the house
Burn down the street
Turn everything red and the dream is complete
With the sound of your world
Going up in the fire
It's a perfect day to throw back your head
And kiss it all goodbye

Iron Boots

Rustic Overtones

Are your thoughts breaking?
Are your thoughts crushing?
Are they naked, are they aching to be pushing?
Do you feel too clean?
I feel that too much
and the hunch i didn't play beackons my way
like a crutch

Iron boots, aluminum wings,
I just can't stop running into things
and I'm all smashed up.
Honey..today i hit the ground, and found
these wings made of tin will just cave in
and iron boots just keep me down

Are your thoughts in silence
or are your thoughts in sirens?
Is it steel rubbing to steel or iron to iron?
Do you think like me? Does trouble just come up?
What is the sickness that growls like machines in your gut?

Iron boots, aluminum wings
I just can't stop running into things
and i'm all smashed up.
Honey...today i hit the ground, and found
these wings made of tin will just cave in
and iron boots just keep me down

tripping me up again
iron boots and matching straight jacket suits
and i fall down again on my chin.
Fuel spilling out, fuel still rushing in is how it begins.
It's a miracle i can still stand up
pulling me down with your gravity.
Sadder than tragedy's sound.
I still get around.
I still get up with iron boots on the ground.

It's in times of riot
not times of quiet
it's where i hide it;
inside it.

It's the distortion, give me distortion
to clear it all away
to clear it all away

It's the distotion, give me distortion
to clear it all away
to clear it all away

Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
Are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right

You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize
Vienna waits for you

Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook
And disappeaar for a while
It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you.

Fare Away

Sun breaks over the spritsail yard.
Chip sheet's hauling to leeward hard.
Crosstree's humming a morning hymn.
I'm the cabin boy, call me Jim. (--His name's Jim--)

Fare away, fare away under main topsail
To the furbelow of the wily whale.

Captain's stalking the quarterdeck.
Tells the tail of his first shipwreck.
Castaway with a case of rum.
Hoped that rescue would never come (--Never come--).

Fare away, fare away under main topsail
To the furbelow of the wily whale.
To the furbelow of the wily, wily...

First mate Peter's a hardened man.
Says the captain's a charlatan.
Don't know tackle from futtock plates.
The sailor's sent to the pearly gates.

Fare away, fare away under main topsail
To the furbelow of the wily whale.

I been sailing these seven seas
Since I's nigh high to a mermaid's knees.
Come next April I'm sixty-three.
I can't advance! (--I like short pants!--)
Save in the cabin on the open sea.

Fare away, fare away under main topsail
To the furbelow of the wily whale.

SILVER EYELASHES
This is the beginning of a song
about the end of our lives
Honey don't get me wrong when I say

I hope you die soon
I hope you live hard
i hope it's dark now in your room
I hope your heart becomes stone
I hope it's heavy
I hope it feels like you died and then you do

if I can't have you
I don't want anyone else to

Robot works good today
You can self-medicate
You can swim the seas without the waves
I can't believe your silver eyelashes
I can't believe how the mermaid fades

I know you hide your love away
Somewhere inside your perfect body

You're not alive, you're just alone
I hope you die slow
on shiny lies he made you believe
and then he leaves
and you have nothing left
except to come back to me

Do you feel anything yet?
I only want my hands around your neck
Your sweet sweet breath
when you drink all night
and sleep like the dead

I hope I die soon
I'm so numb it wouldn't hurt
and you're just waiting like a landmark to get saved
and my heart's already stopped beating
and I've loved you in the most pathetic ways

but if I can't have you
I don't want anyone else to
