Did you go to prom?

i was a good angsty mid-90s cliche and i stayed home and sat in my room in the dark and listened to automatic for the people on repeat.
consequently, i think i think of prom with a kind of mystique that normal people don't. so i'm always curious to know what it was like for other people, or if they were losers like me. hence, the poll. Ew. Prom. I'm talking here about a thingy over here that would be comparable to a senior prom I think.(11 grade if I remember correctly)Didn't go. Way to angsty for that. I locked myself in my room instead and listened to dark-ish music and tried to teach myself English by either watching Dr Who or reading Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett.
how did I know this was your poll?
If you had gone everyone would have said, "nice dress."
no, if i had gone, everyone would have barked at me and thrown stuff at me. as usual.
When you say "barked" were you referring to the hellhounds?
there were no hellhounds at our prom. shame. i totally would've supported a tucker at fredneck high.
how about tucker's brother? What was his name again? Pat?

I went to both my junior and senior prom and I liked the senior prom a hell of a lot better.
I went. It was the one thing I did in high school that was close to normal and social and fitting-in. Of course, my bf had dumped me about 3 weeks before, so because I wanted to go I wound up askingthis guy I hung out with in study hall. I'd known him since7th grade andhe had never shown the slightest interest in being anything but friends, which was totally why I asked him. Well. The prom was uneventful enough, but in the aftermath he developed a stalker-crush on me that survived the next 3 years, including his tour of duty in the navy. So that wasn't so much fun.

A bunch of us were going to go, dressed in our best Ren-Garb, but then one of us got caught up in the wave of post-columbine "everyone who is an outcast might be dangerous" crap, and so couldn't go.
So we instead went to the dance at Marcon (fairly large sci-fi con in Columbus) and Dr. Demento was the DJ. Somehow I think doing the Time Warp in a room full of costumed geeks (myself included of course) was much more fun that prom ever could have been :-)

I went to five, and my school didn't even have a junior prom. My sophomore year, I was dating a senior, so she took me. My Junior year, my friend's boyfriend was out of town and I was his favorite of her friends, so he asked her to take me instead. My senior year, I went to mine, some of my Super Saver friends', and one in Pennsylvania where I met my Penn Pals.
Yeah I went to five as well. First when I was a freshman I went to my boyfriend's junior prom in another town. (Paul Beasi...hee! 13 years later and y'all actually know who that boy is! :) ) Second was another boyfriend's senior prom in another town. Third was another boyfriend's junior prom in another town. Fourth was yet another boyfriend's junior prom in yet another town. Fifth was my own senior prom and Paul B. came to that with me. I didn't go to my junior prom. It was looking to be lame. Among the 5 proms there were 3 dresses. My senior one was the special one so was new and expensive. 1 and 3 I borrowed my older sister's junior prom dress. 2 and 4 I wore a dress I got really cheaply at some store's after-prom sale one year. Wheeee. I wish I could find and scan pics from all of 'em! :)

I went. I wore a really, really cool asymmetrical black dress, and looked great. My parents and their friends did a big photo shoot with me, my boyfriend and the three other couples we went with.
Then we went and it was beyond stupid. I think I'd built it up to be this magical thing--which it wasn't. The highlight of the night was when I requested an obscure David Bowie song and the entire dance floor cleared in like two seconds. Or was that the low point? I'm not sure, I just know that for me, prom was overrated.

I was thinking about it...but in the end spending the money on a dance that I probably was not going to enjoy didn't seem all too appealing for me. However, I didn't really want to spend it home alone sulking, so I ended up going out with my sister for dinner and a musical. We went to a steakhouse and saw Kiss of the Spider Woman. I was able to spend time and bond with my sister a bit, so in the end, it was a great night.

Town was small enough that, in order to make the turn out big enough to be worth the effort, the proms were open to anyone in grades 9-12. So I went to 4. Only had a date to the first one... She asked me. I think because she knew I had a crush on her, and 'cause her boyfriend was in 8th grade (we were both freshmen). I've still got the pictures on a bookshelf. *considers scanning pictures of an even-geekier-than-I-am-now 14-year-old Pauley...* Even with no date, I think I had the most fun at my senior prom. caught in a school merger, we went from a school who had a "junior senior prom" to a merged school with a junior prom (still 9-12, the titles pretty much just indicate who was in the court, and who was funding the shebang), we had a special court that year, 'cause our half of the senior class never had a court to ourselves. I got to be second attendant with one of my best friends. Yaydancing! :-D -- Pauley

When I was in 11th grade, I asked my friend Justin in California to come to prom with me. He couldn't because he had finals, but he said his friend Adam would love to go. Haha. Well one night, I called Justin, and Adam was there. We started talking, and then we started emailing. At the end of one of my emails, i was like "so you want to go to prom? wink wink" just joking. well he responded saying he had never been to prom because he went to college when he was 15!!! freakin genius!! he said he always wanted to though.
so i thought about it, and said why not?? So some guy I never met flew across the country to come to my junior prom with me.

Not only did I not go to my prom but I didn't go because we had a state band competition. Well, we won so that was amazing...but I was a geek and I admit it.
10 years later I went to a very formal Christmas Party with my boyfriend and got to wear a beautiful green velvet ballgown that so I've decided that was my prom... i can beat that. :D at secondary school each year they hired a boat on the thames and everyone would get dressed up and go on this boat and dance and get drunk for the evening. so effectively it was a prom, i guess. i decided that i'd really rather not go spend any more time with a load of people i hated than i had to (i mea, i'd just spent 4 whole years with them, why torture myself any further?). sowhat did i do instead? i went to see a string quartet play some bartok. by myself. :D

Well, technically I didn't go to *prom.* My school had 2 separate formal dances, the Junior Prom and the Senior Ball. I was in France spring of junior year, so I obviously didn't make it to the prom. (And then I spent most of senior year having people ask me who I went to the prom with and "do you remember at the prom when.....?" and such.) But I did go to the Senior Ball, dateless, and had a surprisingly good time considering I've never been much of a dancer. It wasn't anything like The Best Night of My Life (tm) or whatever (though it may have been The Most Mainstream Night of My Life), but it was fun. As were the parties afterwards.
1237 Gordonpoints for bravery. I'd have stayed home and watched Doctor Who.

When I resumed school in Australia most educational primary and secondary institutions where segregated by gender. This was an unfortunate inheritance flowing on from Australia's unfortunate toadying to the old dart's cultural influence long after it ceased to be a colony.
First prom I went to was 10th grade at St. Katherine's. A neighbour's daughter invited me. Her parents saw me pull up in my VW Kombi and promptly followed me in their car to school. We danced in the concert hall, slipped out via the gymnasium, climbed over a wall and drove to Bronte Beach. Got back in reverse order and the parents escorted us back home none the wiser. As far as those mediteranean people with medieaeval attitudes were concerned, we could never have left the school grounds, so nothing "amoral" could have happened. Second prom was hosted by the boy's school I attended in year 12. I went on my own. True to form, we boys congregated in the middle of the gymnasium, acting macho in order to disguise our unease, while the girls lined the walls, totally agog at the witless display of the wannabe peacocks they were looking at. I caught sight of a girl with amazingly sparkling eyes right when she looked at me. She was not, unlike any others, encumbered by any mascara, lipstick, blush or rouge. Like a moth drawn to the candle light, I walked up to her and asked her if she wanted to dance. We danced, slowly and more slowly. Then everything just melted. We bought prawns for breakfast at Bondi Beach, and creamed strawberry tarts with whipped cream at the gelato bar. I cannot remember the name of either girl, but we had fun.

When I was a Freshman, a Senior asked me to the prom! Of course, I was a Freshman in college, and he was a senior in High School...
So I went to two proms with the same guy. At the time of the first (mine), we were dating. At the time of the second (his), we were not. Thus, the second was much more fun. It on a boat that sailed around Manhattan.

Uh... I'll be the first to say I'm not old enough yet to go to prom. I did have an experience that seems similar to most of yours though, so I'll share that. It was this year's homecoming dance: I was in my school's musical and had low-self esteem. One day during a rehearsal, a girl asks me "What do you think of me?" I was taken aback by this question, but eventually wound up being manipulated into asking her to going to homecoming. I didn't mind going with her, she seemed nice enough; just slighty grated on my nerves, but I did not want to hurt her feelings. Still had low self-esteem. The next day, I discovered that an older girl who I had a crush on had an even bigger crush on me! I was stunned. However, I knew that I had promised to take the musicalgirl to homecoming, and I am not one to break promises (or hearts). Self-esteem looking upwards at the thought of someone liking me back though. Flash forward to the dance. I takemy musicalfriendto the dance with my friends and their dates. As soon as we get there, my date flies off to her friends. I am leftalone for the whole night. All my date wanted was someone to walk in with. I didn't mind that much; slightlymiffed that she even felt sheneeded a date. After being ditched, I didn't want to take her anywhere again. I actually tried to find her so that we could dance, but she was no where to be found... Self esteem droped even lower. Afterwards, I asked out the older girl. Self-esteem very high now. -The Ever Magical Bob

Went to a strict private religious school that was against dancing, so no dances of any kind. There was a "junior-senior formal" or as we called it "the non-prom" that I did go to twice. The school wouldn't even call it a prom, because "prom is short for prominade and that is a dance and dancing is evil."
Looking back, I had a date for both formals. Though the date from my junior year spent the whole time flirting with my friend and actively avoiding me. No matter, I liked my friend's date better (we're married now).

I went to my junior prom. Well, it would have been my junior prom had I not taken a leave of absence and were actually a junior. But it was my boyfriend's junior year (this would be the bf that was too much of a misfit geek even for the geeks)
I don't remember much about the dance itself. I do remember that I loooooooved my dress-- it was pale pink satin brocade and I felt like a princess. What I also remember is: getting hysterical cos I couldn't get my contacts in and having to go to Pearle Vision to get someone there to put them in for me Mark's mom making me a corsage from her orchids and it falling to pieces before we even got to prom deciding to let a high school boy snap our prom pics rather than using the professional photographer--- Mark wasn't even in the pic and my head was all but cut off, but there was a lovely zoomed in close-up of my cleavage *rolls eyes*; so no prom pics. Hrmm-- I don't have wedding pictures either. Seems to be a pattern in my life. So... prom was dumb. And the music was lame too. After prom was more fun. I went to a sunrise breakfast with my geeky drama nerd pals-- we sat on the dock overlooking a duck pond and sang Beatles songs and ate pancakes. It rocked. Prom was worth it for the dress. Otherwise- no.

I could have gone last year...but my mom decided for me that I was not going to go. So this year...I'm probably going to go...although I don't want to. Something about friendships...*shrug*..beats me. I'd rather go to post-prom and party it up there...but I'll survive.

I went STAG for Prom my Sr. year. WHAT a disaster. All of my friends had dates, whether they were dating or not. So I was the proverbial third wheel and went straight home instead of doing the all night stuff.
The dress I wore was horrible. My parents couldn't afford to buy one, so they had a relative send me one. Yick!! BRIGHT blue and hideous. At my 10 yr reunion, there was a video that showed us entering the building where prom was held. *siiiigh* And there I was, in that big, bright blue dress. Prom = just one more thing that unpopular kids should steer clear of. You must first create an account to post.
