Should there be a FruCon 6?

This will probably be the first in a series of polls about FruCon 6. Other
factors include timing, location, activities, etc. Please feel free to post any
thoughts you have below!
Ya know..... even though I am a major winter person... I would tend to agree with
this......
I think it should be in the spring.... or the fall..... when the weather is milder and
we can all just wander around the city.
There is SO much to do in toronto... it's such a fun city!
I've explored a lot.... but not as much as I would have had I been able to just
walk aimlessly. :)
Just, please, no SUMMER frucon.... *that* I would not attend. Anything over 70 outside, and I'll be in where it's air conditioned. (and, I know I'm not the only one....)
i've been saying this for years, i second that motion. i know the room rates are
a little cheaper during the great freeze of winter, but c'mon.. there's a good
chance we'll end up with tons of rooms reserved and then a snowstorm would keep
most of us from making it and losing deposits/etc. the original timing was meant
to coincide with some shows they happened to be playing. there's no reason not
to bump it ahead a couple months. there's so much to see in toronto, and it's so
much harder to see it when you're worried about losing fingers to frostbite! :-)
/me just sits and LAUGHS at all of y'all who think Toronto in February is
cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rolls around for a little while*
Born and raised in Edmonton, still living here, Toronto in February is a beautiful
break from Edmonton in February! When I attended Frucon IV, I wore -sandals-.
Outdoors. :)
Buncha wusses. ;) (j/k)
Seriously, though, I'm on the 'don't care' side of the fence right now (this is a
strange, odd, five-sided fence we're talking about here, right? ;)) I didn't make it
to Frucon last year, and barely made it the year before that. A trip to Toronto isn't
an easy thing to afford... it's actually more expensive to fly there from Edmonton,
in Canada, than it is to fly there from most major American cities. Also, the closer
you get to the date, the more the prices go up, and (no offense to the con
committe, you guys are GREAT) not knowing details until a little while beforehand
makes booking a flight for under $800 a tricky thing.
For me, what clinched it this year was the band not playing. If it had been an
opportunity for a rare Fruvous concert, that would have been the clincher that
would push me to decide to just go for it, and to hell with not being able to eat for
a few months. I love y'all, but it takes something -incredibly- special for me to
shell out more than a month's pay for a three-day vacation.
So.. yeah. Eri's thoughts on the subject. Speaking of getting paid, I should get to
work now.
Yeah, I'm going to stand up on the side of freezing Toronto.
While I'll admit that the freezing cold isn't great for standing in line for concerts, for me it's still part of the con. Granted, I'm the boy who leaves his bedroom window wide open when it's 10F out... The other good things about Feb. are the fairly cheep prices (as already mentioned), and also the fact that it's quite easy to get out of school/work (at least for me it has been).
The fact that it is on President's Day weekend makes it very easy for me. I can
take the Friday off and make it a 4-day weekend. I need the Friday to pick up the
people I'm carpooling up there, and the Monday that I get off anyway to take
people home.
I also agree with the fact that whether there is an "official" con or not, there will still be a gathering there for people who still want to do it. It's a vacation, and a great way to see those people you only see a couple of times a year (like Falcon Ridge). The West Coast has their own gatherings as well, I don't see this as being any different.
Fan conventions are usually off season, it makes them so much cheaper. You gotta
love the winter rates in teh Toronto hotels
about timing...um...can we do it before or after valentine's day?

whoever said they dont care should be drawn and quartered
Why?
As a fruhead, my loyalties are to the band. For me (and this is only for me) there is very little draw to go to Toronto in February if the band is still on hiatus. Sure I have made many friends on fruhead.com that it would be nice to socialize with, but I can socialize with many of them on other occasions. I find that with so many people, there just isn't enough time to go around for me to really get any quality time with the people I'm most interested in seeing. A couple of them visited me for less than a day recently and yet in some ways I feel like I saw more of them than I would have at FC5 had I attended. So, I'm not opposed to there being a Frucon 6, but I'm not opposed to the non- existence of one either. Maybe I would attend, maybe I wouldn't depending on my situation at the time. So the best answer for me was "I don't care." We're all entitled to our opinions, or lack thereof. :)
I'm right there with my husband, and I too voted "I don't care". I am not at all
opposed to there being a Frucon. On the other hand, I have not attended the last
two years, for various reasons (one year because I could afford to either go to
Frucon 4 or have a wedding, and I chose my wedding), and I think it likely that I
would not attend Frucon 6. When it comes right down to it, without a performance
from the band happening at the same time, I would rather see my friends in a
context which would actually allow me to SEE them and spend real time with
them... where there aren't so many people demanding their attention at once.
In the end, as long as the band is on hiatus, the existance of Frucon (or not) will probably affect me very little. I certainly do not begrudge anyone else the opportunity if they want it, but I really have no opinion either way. For me the draw to Frucon (and all Fruvous shows as well) was the band. The community was a nice perk, but I can enjoy that other times... other places. M
I also agree with Paul. Location and finances play a lot into who and who can't go
to Frucon, and it should never be suggested that they are less of a Fruvous fan
than others because of those two factors. For example: I live in New Zealand and
it's not like I can just pop over to Toronto whenever I feel like it and attend
Frucon. So, no, I don't care if there is a Frucon next year and I voted honestly.

There should absolutely be a Frucon 6. It's not like there's a shortage of things to
do in Toronto. And I'd be happy to help out this year however I can. I'm sure we
can set up another cool concert this year with one of the great Toronto bands - I'd
bet The Supers would love to play again. And Tory's amazing swing band always
plays Saturday nights at the Reservoir Lounge.

I've never gone to a Frucon. I probably never will. But that doesn't mean that
those of you who love the things shouldn't have them. I'm lucky in that I get to
see a lot of my Fruhead friends often, but I know a lot of people aren't as lucky --
and I also know that there are a lot of people I wish I could see more often. I just
tend to be in weird positions financially and professionally around Frucon time
(hopefully by this February, I'll have just moved to Chicago and be starting a great
new job...), which have always prevented me from showing up in Toronto. But
yeah. There should be a Frucon 6. And it should be the best Frucon ever. And yes,
you should all play "Fell In Love." :)

As long as people want to get together in Toronto and party for the weekend, I'm
certainly all for it. I had such a blast last year there, so I'd certainly do it again.
I'll second this!
I have a feeling that even if there isn't a "real" con, a bunch of us will still migrate up there that same weekend. For me, the con is just a meeting room, the activities are secondary. It's the frheads there that make it. That's why this past year was my favorite con, I actually went ahead and hung out with people I don't see on a regular basis.

I voted for the emphatic yes, even though I honestly don't know if I'd go. But I
wouldn't rule it out so I couldn't pick the "yes but I won't go" option. Last year was
hard for me in ways not related to the con itself...it's hard not to let that color
things. Plus there's the fact that my partner for the first time in years is a non-
fruhead. That may make it not happen even if I'm inclined to go. But I'd love it if it
did come together, and if I did get to go and see friends.
We'll see, we'll see. -AK

I voted "YES, but I probably won't go"
Because I think the con is a great time for people to get together, I think it's gonna happen in some way, shape or form, even if it's not official and because if it turned out that I -could- go, I want it to be happening so that there was something to attend. however, at this time-I can see no way that I'd be able to attend. even though I'd really want to. my $0.02

I understand the issue that may come with the cold weather of toronto...although,
I lived there most my life, and I don't really find the weather all that cold
anymore, but we have to remember that this is a multi-national event :)
I voted yes. because I live in ontario, there are many fruheads I very rarely get to see...usually only at organized events like frucon or FRFF. and if there IS no frucon, it's most likely I wouldn't get to see them till next FRFF. If there is no official con, I will most certainly attend the informal gathering of Fruheads that will inevitably occurr. and I'd most certainly help plan it :) but I'm still crossing my crossables for it to happen.

If somehow, some way, the boys would end their hiatus and play the thing!!!!!Then
I would hitchhike there!

Well, I'm actually going to speak here. Scary.
I think that there should be a frucon. And, as always, I'm going to plan on attending, but, don't know whether or not I will actually be able to. Fortunately (or unfortunately :D ) I've been able to make it out to the last three. The first one I went to, I went to see the band. The second and third time, I went to see a bunch of fun people. But, I also really enjoy seeing the sights of Toronto. I like to wander about, and just go into strange shops, and, just, be a tourist. And, I'd like to vote for it to stay the same time. Yes, I know, it's cold. But, there's been 5 of them now, and, it's I'd hope, becoming a bit of a tradition. Personally, I think if the day of the con starts changing, well, it's becoming something else. But, that's just me. And, if someone wants to start a con at some other time, some other location, whatever, I think more power to them. It's always fun to have a get together. For the past few years, I've tried to have little parties and get a bunch of people to come out and have fun. And, I hope, that people have had some fun at them. But, I've gotten way off topic. Anyways, yeah, I'd like to see the con continue, in some way shape or form. But, I'd like to see that it stays the same day. Mike
Go Mike!
I agree. It may be cold as hell or snowy, but I love Toronto and I love getting a break on the prices. Plus I'm at a cool job which gives me President's Day off. I have good friends in different parts of the country so the chance to see a multiple # of folks really helps, cause I don't have the vacation time/money to go see a lot of people, ya know? Anyway, that being said... You must first create an account to post.
