All I can say is there must be a whole lot of lonely ornithologists out there who
came up with those names (I'm assuming the people who study birds are the ones
that name them when they discover a new one)
Either that or they're all twelve year old boys!

OK...what's with half this thread getting modded down below threshold? Can
anyone seriously object to a lack of helpful discourse based on a poll like THIS?
Gah...if it's a silly poll that people can't seriously respond to, I think it's ridiculous
to mod folks down who don't add enough to the discussion. Come ON.
Sorry. Just ticked off when I came and suddenly half the posts were below threshold and I could see no logical reason. -AK
Sorry I freaked. I just know if it happened to me in a thread as non-serious as this
I would probably take it as a personal affront. So I got defensive in their favor.
Heeee. :)
-AK
Well, it's been addressed relatively speaking.
People still have the ability to mod posts..... and unfortunately, people are still
using it to show either agreement or disagreement with said posts.
It appears, as expected, that people are misusing the system.... and moreso, missing the point. But, again, perhaps that would be fixed by having a disclaimer..... or an "are you sure?" sort of window... with an explanation... when you click on thumbs up or down.... so that people are made aware that this is not a way of showing agreement/disagreement? Just a thought....
See, it's stuff like this that makes me favor just droping the system, at least for
now. On a big board it's definitly useful, but I don't think we need it here.
Could we maybe try it without mods for a couple of polls and see how things go? If the lack of mods becomes leads to abuse, than my all means put them back, but right now I think they're just causing more problems than they solve.
What Talcott said. In my opinion, the current mod system discourages people from
posting -- if our words aren't perfectly chosen, thought-provoking, and meaningful,
we run the risk of being modded down and having our ratings slip (correct me if
I'm wrong...I still don't get this whole thing). That doesn't exactly cntribute to a
feeling of welcome, or an atmosphere of open discussion. And as I and others
have pointed out before, there's already been abuse of the system, and as long as
the system continues, so will the abuse. I would actually like a return to the old
FHDC moderator system, because I think moderating trolls and abuse is more
important (and useful) than moderating every single post people make in every
single forum. I don't think people should be judged here by whether or not
everything they say is "relevant" to everybody else in the community. As long as
people are willing to follow the acceptable use policy and treat others as they want
to be treated, they're OK by me.
I agree. I dropped the mod system for now. Let's see how it goes and if we need
something in the future, we can go that route.
