Source Material for Musicals

What books, plays, films do you think would make good source material for a musical. I hate to say it but Harry Potter is a natural, the only question is why hasn't it been produced yet? A question in a similar vein, what current songwriters do you think should write a musical. BenderL have been planning out a Christine Lavin revue.

I know! Let's stop ruining currently GOOD things by making them into musicals.

ummm....why would you WANT it produced???� I love musicals as much as the next person, but i think somethings should be left as good as they are with out having them break into song every 15 minutes.� i think song and dance numbers would ruin a�story�as endearing as Harry Potter. �yes yes...i know books like "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Misables" have been turning into fantastic, award winning, crowd pleasing musicals (both of which i love) but they were both depressing tales anyway and song were just a good way of 1) picking up the pace of the story and 2) lightening up the mood.� HP needs no help on either front...at least IMHO

I would hardly say that, Oliver Twist, Tales of the South Pacific, Pygmalion, or Les Miserables were ruined by being made into musicals.

I just heard Erin being interviewed and she said that she'd love to write for the theatre.

ooooooo come *on*, a harry potter musical would RULE. the cheesier, the better. in the same vein or style as rocky horror. but with�bad songs and badder rhyming. yay!

A friend and I once started writing the Sixth Sense musical, which included the songs "I'm Feeling Much Better Now" and "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" amongst many others. I fell out of touch with him and I think it's such a shame the musical will never come to fruition. Especially the epilogue in which an actor playing M. Night Shyamalwhatever(sp?) came out and insulted the audience and bragged about fooling them :D

yes...i think peter mulvey should write a musical...only because I could listen to albums of his stuff in one sitting...and come to think of it wouldn't "The Trouble With Poets" be a wonderful musical title?

It does sound like a good title for a musical, yes. :)

He has. Kindasorta. Peter was writing and performing a score for Marquette University Theatre's production of Sam Shepard's "A Lie of the Mind" when he recorded Rain in 1993. It was directed by Michael Abbott - any relation? :)

We had two in Portland that I thought should have continued world-wide. I thought it was a horrible idea but with the right cast it was to die for.

Gilligan's Island: The Musical (my fave song was No Love for Lovey)

Followed by Natural Born Castaways...I wonder about copyright infringement because the score for the second one was Sgt. Pepper (a broadway producer came to the island to come up with his�next big hit but had writer's block. They decided to write it for him in hopes that he'd take them home...all they had for music was that record). Picture this: Fixing a Hole...when sung by The Skipper, "A hole that was made by Gilligan".
