Discussion: Would you say you were "popular" in high school?
Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 · 21 years, 8 months ago
I'm still there, and wouldn't say I'm popular, but if I don't pretend to be cooler than others see me, I can usually keep from being totallyh alienated. Of course, being partially alienated is good when your class is 14 people, and most of them are really mean to each other, it's a good cycle to stay out of.

BTW, this is the first time I've got the first post. Yay!

There were a lot of people who were cruel to each other in my high school. One instance that really stands out is when a girl in my English class was killed in a car accident. She was one that didn't fall in the popular group but everyone respected. I remember one girl blurting out in class: "Why the hell are you all crying. Who cares that that stupid bitch died?" We had some people like that and others who were wonderful. I had a smaller circle of friends that I was really close with and were wonderful people who were also really loyal. That was what mattered to me more than being "popular".
Andrea Krause · 21 years, 8 months ago

I was by no means popular...but I wasn't ridiculedor anything either. I had a small core of friends and we weren't anything bad or good. We were just middle of the road. I was a little weird. I was the girl always in black and depressed and carrying around all her earthly posessions in an army duffel bag. :) My friends were pretty darn normal.

My school was weird in general. We had popular kids but there wasn't a whole lot of...unpopular. It was pretty tolerant.

A girl named Becca · 21 years, 8 months ago

I had a pretty close set of friends in high school,so I wasn't often alone in school and I generally had someone tohang out with after school ifI wanted. My freshman year I was even cool for a little while because I had upperclassman friends from youth group and community theater and such. (Heh...yeah...well, at the time I thought that made me cool....) However, I was certainly never "popular" in quotation marks. Nor would I have cared to be, because then I would've had to be friends with all the other "popular" people and...well...I just didn't like most of them that much. (I don't mean to over-generalize. Some of them were very nice. More of them, however, were downright rude and obnoxious.) Plus, I would've had to put a whole lot more thought into my appearance and, really, who wants to get up early enough to worry about all that stuff?

I also wasn't really "un-popular," though...I was, in middle school, without really realizing it, but by high school I'd become a little more socially conscious and less ridicule-able. :)

Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Yeah freshman year was great because my sister was a senior and all her friends adored me and paid attention to me. :)
Rachel Marie aka RAI · 21 years, 8 months ago
...Do the current results not surprise me?

1 yes, 11 no. ;o)

Well, hey, we're all hippies and geeks... we get it best in the long run!

This poll question was met with much laughter. Popular. Me. HAH!
Sally M Block · 21 years, 8 months ago

Yes but only because my class size was like, 72. Everyone knew everyone, everybody filled a certain stereotype but it wasn't until the end of Senior year that we all got close.

Josh Woodward Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Ditto here, although mine was closer to 50 people. There weren't enough people to form strict cliques, and so most people got along to some extent. Plus, I was the only rock musician in the class. :)
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Heh.
I have you both beat.

My high school class was 22 people.
:)

So yeah, we all kinda got along.
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years, 8 months ago

Yeah actually that might explain it...I mentioned before we didn't have a lot of the social strata hostility and such at my school. My class had 77 people. So maybe that's the key, since y'all seem to have similar experiences as mine. The smaller the class, the more you actually have to know people, the less you can see them as targets. Seeing the humanity in another person kinda kills the fun in ridiculing them, I suspect. :)

Paul likes to point out that there were 1300 people in his class. I can't even conceive of that. My entire school, grades 7-12, had 550 people at best. That's not even half of his *whole class*. I would feel like such a speck of dirt in a world that large. And I would totally have given into my tendency to fade into the walls. My school forced me to know people and that's probably all that saved me from full invisibilty. :)

You mean like Invisible Girl on Buffy?
Arbie Back · 21 years, 8 months ago

I guess it depends on your personality. My grad class was about 600. The fact that I could easily have gotten lost made me work harder to be noticed. I was not known by everyone, not by a long shot, but I was never a wallflower in class.

Maybe it was the times, maybe it was just expected of us, but I never had the sense of any "targeting". We had all the usual cliques: the jocks, the arts people, the poets and writers, science nerds, music nerds (yay me), drama geeks. As well we had a strong shop program; auto shop, welding, carpentery;a chef training program, a business/secretarial program, and probably others. We all seemed to more or less get along.

Seriously. As I write this (july 12, 10:30pdt) the few that have answered have said, if I may paraphrase; "I had my group of friends but I wasn't popular". If I infer from that that you can only consider yourself popular if you are liked by everybody then I doubt if anyone is popular. Even the people you think were popular were not liked by everyone, most of us probably found those people to be vacuous. So that's not it. So what's the gauge? Usually, it boils down to whether you were friends with the people you percieve it to be necessary to be friends with in order to be popular. Whether that was all or most of the cheerleading squad or the student government it is still you and your perceptions. The sad truth is thatsome of thosepeople went home and closed the door and felt just as alone as you. Because dispite the wonderful loves we have/will have and the wonderful friends we have/will have/have had, there is no one butus insideour heads. </rant>

So anyway, was I popular? I was a music geek so there was always a large group of people with a common interest that spent a lot of time together. I knew all of them and liked most of them a lot and I am grateful for the way they enlivened and enriched my life. Dunno if I was popular but I sure feel damn lucky to have known them.

A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Well....for me, at least, it's the quotation marks in the question that make the difference between being liked and being "popular." "Popular" in quotation marks was exactly how I described a certain group of people while I was in high school, so I assumed this question was trying to determine which Fruheads were in that group or its equivalent in their own schools. I agree, of course that the "popular" kids probably had more enemies than friends, but I guess the reason they still got to be "popular" was that they at least appeared to feel that the opinions of the people who didn't like them were insignificant because those people weren't, well, "popular." There were also some kids who genuinely were liked by almost everyone...but they were a different group altogether.
sheryls · 21 years, 8 months ago

In fact, i would say i was vastly unpopular. i was always loud, outspoken, annoying, center-of-attention little drama queen.

..really, not a whole lot has changed ;)

Speaking of HS popularity, any other fans of Square Pegs out there?
All we have to do is click with the right clique.

as for the popularity question, i was smart, i was shy, and i was ugly. and i played trombone.
what do *you* think? :P
*joolee* Back · 21 years, 8 months ago

egads, you were prom queen weren't you, you little cheerleader! :D

Yeah, I was hardly popular...my social status was pretty low, though there were people worse off than I was. I had the whole "I do so many different things and know a ton of people, and have this many connections to everythingso you don't hate me!" thing going on.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
You were smart and shy and played the trombone but you weren't ugly. I've seen your pictures. You were a cuter version of Patti (Sarah Jessica Parker) from Square Pegs.

Erica: movin' to Ohio!! · 21 years, 8 months ago
well, most everyone knew who i was. the school art slave. SCADS of posters for various clubs and events. yearbooks covers. literary magazine. everytime a meeting brought up the subject of needing someone artistic, even people i despised volunteered my name. y'know, even though i wasn't there. still, i felt like i had to help. people were grateful, at least. the teachers loved me. i had a lot of friends. i just hated all of it. *shrug* most of my time in high school was spent outside of class. i took independant's for every subject my senior year. i basically showed up for a.p. art and lunch with my now-ex. and time to smoke in back of the gym. my private spite for the administration. yay me.
Erica: movin' to Ohio!! Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
NOT TO MENTION: during my senior year i was hospitalised twice bc apparently cutting my wrists in the bathroom with a pen/razor counts as, and this is a direct quote from the principal, "assault with a weapon." i got sent home a lot by that jerk. if my mom and i were having a meeting with the school social worker or psychiatrist, and she started yelling at me, if i responded he'd kick me out of school for the day. forgive me for having issues. fucking dumbass. he got fired though. come to think of it, our school's admin. really sucked the big one. my cousin steven was molested and raped by the male asst. superintendant when he was in 7th grade. and it took the school until we were in 12th grade to catch the dude. and might i add that he lured these kids by posing as a kid online using SCHOOL COMPUTERS AT 5 IN THE MORNING. and no one found that even vaguely suspicious?

nitsita · 21 years, 8 months ago

I was popular in the sense that everyone knew who I was.. well.. the whole school knew who I was ( 2000 people... my grad class was 250 people..).... I was the chiropractor's daughter, and the girl who was better in English than even the English teachers. I was the resource person for anything English-related, especially English homework due after break that hadn't been done. I was also reknown for having really good grade despite missing sooooo many classes....

so I was "popular", but not in the sense that everyone thought I was cool and fun to hang with.

In a (three-year) High School that spread across three huge blocks, had over 3,500 students, and had just shy of 1300 students in my graduating class, I was a non-entity!

...And *DAMN* was commencment LLLLLLLoooooonnnnnngggggggggg!

Tell me about it! I had about 1,000 students in my graduating class and 4,000 students total housedinone8-story building.During commencement we walked out by majors and in fours for the procession and that alone took close to2 hours. Fortunately they did not read out everyone's name or else we would have been there until evening. :)

in my year group at school there wasn't really a popular/unpopular divide. it was more just various cliques or groups of people that hung out and so there wasn't really much bullying or anything of the sort... more likely the girls would bitch about each other and that was it. plus pretty much everyone conformed to a certain extent, and i can't really remember who the extroverts/weirdos were (if there were any at all) (probably 'cause i was one *g*). it made for a pretty dull social life actually. there was none of the colourful social (or even antisocial) mix that american high school seems to have. (yes, i'm going on tv and film portrayals here. yes, i should stop watching Ed. shut up.) :D

Being that the last time I walked through the doors of high school 11 years ago, I find that being popular or in my case, not, really doesn't have that much bearing on my life right now. Odds are you will not see those people that you want to be impressed by you. And if the majority does not feel you being yourself is up to their standards, why worry about it anyways? They are all just fashion lemmings trying to catch up with a fad that probably died five minutes ago somewhere else. They are jocks trying to hide a pain in their lives through athletics. Always, ALWAYS be true to yourself, one way or another.
