musical game

   Discussion: musical game
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 9 months ago
My sister and I play a game where we each have to name a song that includes a word on a given topic. The first one that can't think of one wins. This of course works as a theme for a radio show. I have a good topic. Let's see how many songs we can come up with. The topic is other musicians. Extra credit to the for making strings of songs with the subject of one song being the singer of the next. I'll start it off.
  1. Christine Lavin's Please Don't Make Me Too Happy Mentions Paul Simon.
  2. Paul Simon's A Simple Philipic mentions Dylan.
  3. Dylan's Song for Woody Mentions Woody Guthrie

so...if we were to -name- the game, would it, like, be called 'six degrees of woody guthrie'??

~cackle~

though kevin bacon -does- have a band...heh
Shelly · 21 years, 9 months ago
ok.....so i've only gotten to three degrees and i'd be further if someone -other- than frvous -mentioned- fruvous besides....well...-us- when we filk them and such....:P.....and it's only after 6am...but i shall work on this more when i have more time

'beware the killer tents' by moxy frvous mentions eddie from ohio{well, and every damn one else....lol}

'catchers, drummers, anchormen' by eddie from ohio mentions buddy holly

and THIS one is -really- reaching{and doesn't prolly count, but teehee}

'early in the morning' by buddy holly mentions a rolling stone.....lol{not -the stones...but, like..um...maybe -one- could be....considered???....like mick or keith??? :P}

and i think i should get extra points for knowing that -both- eddie from ohio AND the rolling stones have recorded 'not fade away', originally by buddy holly, on albums ;)

No, that's Adam Busch.

Rap music is where it's at for this. Almost any rap song has more than its share of namedropping. :)
angelmusicmaven Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

half the time they're talking about themselves tho! ;)

Here's one I like from Robbie Williams, cool tune called "Strong:"

In the morning when I wake up, I look like KISS but without the makeup"

I love that song! ("Strong")

Ok, topic...

"Rock Show" by Paul McCartney and Wings mentions Jimmy Page

"Looking Out My Back Door" by CCR mentions Buck Owens

"Got Till It's Gone" by Janet Jackson mentions Joni Mtichell (well duh since it's a reworking of Big Yellow Taxi)

"Frank Sinatra" by Cake

"Garden Party" by Ricky Nelson makes a reference to John and Yoko ("Yoko brought her walrus")

"Lady Is A Vamp" by The Spice Girls mentions Elvis P., Kula Shaker, and Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.

"Man on The Moon" by REM also mentions Elvis P.

Sort of roundabout here, but there is that line in "London Calling" by The Clash ("all that phony beatlemania has bitten the dust")

"Yer Blues" by The Beatles refers to a song by Bob Dylan ("just like Dylan's Mr. Jones")

The Young Fresh Fellows do quite a bit of name-dropping in their own songs:

  • The Psychadelic Furs in "Big House"
  • Amy Grant in, well, "Amy Grant"
  • Hank Williams, Karen Carpenter, and Elvis Presley in "Hank, Karen, And Elvis"
  • Ringo Starr in "My Friend Ringo"
  • John Lennon in "Where The Hell Did They Go?"
  • The Presidents of the United States of America and Superdeluxe in "Good Times Rock 'n' Roll"

Another artist who refers to a lot of other artists and bands is Frank Black, although he often doesn't refer to the artist directly by name.

  • "I Heard Ramona Sing" is about the Ramones, and also mentions Menudo.
  • "Czar" is about John Denver.
  • "Ten Percenter" is about Iggy Pop.
  • "The Man Who Was Too Loud" is about Jonathan Richman.
  • "85 Weeks" is about Captain Beefheart.
  • "If It Takes All Night" mentions Johnny Horton (and Frank also has an instrumental called "The Ballad Of Johnny Horton").
  • The Pixies' "Make Believe" is about Debbie Gibson.

The first thing that comes to mind is Sloan's The Lines You Amend, which mentions Ringo Starr. But geez, there are so many, really. I'm probably going to spend most of my day thinking about it!
Eri Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

And the Arrogant Worms! They mention Jimihendrixjanisjoplinbrianjoneskeithmoon, jim morrison, roy orbison, johnlennonbobmarleyleonardbernsteinelvispresley.

Well, they're not too sure about Elvis, but I think you get the point. ;D

Eri Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
Or, the Counting Crows' Mr. Jones.. "I wanna be Bob Dylan".

"Be My Yoko Ono" by BNL
"I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono" by Dar

lawrence Back · 21 years, 9 months ago
heh. I was about to say "If you consider her a 'musician,' sure...." but then I realised those songs also both mention John Lennon, so they work either way. :)
Nathan Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

Yoko is also mentioned in Weird Al's "Achy Breaky Song," along with Donny and Marie, Barry Manilow, New Kids on the Block, the Village People, Vanilla Ice, the Bee Gees, Debbie Boone, ABBA, Slim Whitman, Zamfir, Tiffany, and, of course, Billy Ray Cyrus.

Another song that name-drops a lot of bands is Hypnotic Clambake's "When Your Mother Knows The Name Of A Band," which mentions Glenn Miller, John Phillip Sousa, Lawrence Welk, the Grateful Dead, Nine Inch Nails, Milli Vanilli, the Sex Pistols, Alice in Chains, and the Beatles.

And the completion of the trio:

"Ballad of John and Yoko" by The Beatles

Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 21 years, 9 months ago

One of my favourite songs from 10th grade year that was constantly played on the radio was "You only get what you give" by the New Radicals which was a good song, except for the last couple lines. Those last couple of lines however, mentions Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson.

And shall we ignore rappers, or am I allowed to say that Eminem mentions Moby, Will Smith, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Fred Durst (and Limp Bizkit), etc.

Does dissing other musicians even count? Because that's all I can think of.

--Rachel
--I was way too addicted to the radio for a while back.
