American Idol

So, I'm curious. Am I the only American Idol addict around here? I know it's not really in line with what most of our tastes involve but it's a guilty pleasure of mine and I wondered how f-ed up I am. :)
This brought to you by my seething anger at last night's results. :)
i'm surprised i've never gotten into american idol. i'm usually fascinated by any kind of musical competition. i was totally hooked on "pop stars" when that was on a few years ago. i think the problem is that "american idol" is on opposite buffy. maybe i'll get into it next season.
*blushes with shame* Um. Yep. Watched it. I didn't ENJOY It as much as AI but I was addicted. I haven't gotten snagged by the others though! No Married By America! No Mr. Personality!
*whine* I'm the anti-Nate. Here here for opposite Buffy. I found myself watching American Idol during Buffy re-runs, and it is dangerously addictive. And I have a theory as to why. Most talent shows have AMAZING acts, especially the Idols knock-offs like Star Search (Well, it's an old concept, but it was on in syndication when it first came out), America's Most Talented Kid (One of the most scary shows on television), Born To Diva, and the model search show. But what American Idol has that these shows don't have are imperfect performers. I watched Star Search and saw act after polished act, and you know what? It got boring. AI's finalists all have flaws, some more glaring than others. When you see those flaws, you say to yourself (Hey, I could do that!) You take pleasure in the fact that the "best" in America have faults, just like yourself. And then you start to rout for them as they get better, or worse in some finalists's cases. And you also rout for the people who are OBVIOUSLY better, like Ruben and Clay. If all the finalists on AI were perfect, you couldn't tell much difference between them all, and it would be, yes, boring. The competition and drama is what drives the show, not the performances. Each singer only gets 90 seconds on stage, so that leaves a LOT of time for fluff and build-up. As for the show itself, it is obvious it will be Ruben and Clay as the final two. But who will win? Depends on who you ask. Clay has been pulling WAY ahead in the USAToday poll, taking 75% of the vote. Could be all the TRL people voting him in. i'm not so sure about ruben and clay. i've been in love with clay since his first audition aired, back when he was still geekboy. (i thought that look suited him just FINE, thankyouvermuch!) clay has an amazing voice, but doesn't quite have the presence of ruben. BUT what about kimberley locke? she's amazing! and boy does she have an adorable personality!! she's been my top pick since HER first audition. (clay's been my top cuteboy pick, but kimberley's been my top talent pick.) josh gracin? he's got the southern vote locked. don't count him out. definitely wouldn't be my choice, though. ick. no personality, and questionable talent.
Yes. I've watched more this season than last.. .and me likey Clay ;) Think Carmen should have been off WAAAAAY before she finally was, and Josh should have been gone already, but as long as Clay's sticking around I won't complain. Ruben's great when he doesn't sound exactly like Vandross-- enjoyed his "Sweet Hoem Alabama." It's a total karaoke contest but yeah, the silly drama factor is very important to the show. And the themes are sometimes cool.
I like Kim, Ruben, Clay and Trenyce each for different reasons. I would have been happy with any of them winning. I was hoping JOSH would go last night so that the rest of the show's run would be gravy for me. But no, I still have to yell at my TV to make Josh go away. Argh.
Clay is adorable and seems like he'd be an awesome friend, and he has a great voice, but I think he needs to work on his act. Ruben has a great voice and is adorable in a huggable way, but he needs to stop with the repetitive arm movements and with smiling through any song, even if it's a heartbreak song. Kimberley just keeps getting better and better. I really like her a lot. She seems a bit less accessible in the personality department but in terms of personality and who I'd like to hear an album by, I'd probably root for her, in the end. But man...I'd love to see Ruben and Clay in a buddy movie. :) Except when they butcher Billy Joel. ARGGGGGGH! Now for a challenge, I'd LOVE to see them attempt to sing TMBG songs. Wouldn't THAT be a hoot? I love AI. Even when it frustrates me that Josh hasn't been kicked off yet.
You mean that long drawn out Steven Spielberg movie? And here I thought you had good taste. :)
"hi. My name is Frulie and I watch American Idol! I've tried to stop, but they keep singing...and I keep watchin.....I need it every week! It's getting bad! I won't work on the nights that it comes on, and I make my husband and roomate watch too! It's taking over my life!" *sob* ~J~
Well, it seemed like a half-decent premise and the beginning of the movie wasn't bad...but overall AI was an utter disappointment for me. There were at least 3 distinct points where the movie could have ended before the movie actually ended and only one of those that would have left me satisfied...but alas, it didn't end there, so, yes, it sucked! :)
