Conventions!

   Discussion: Conventions!
John J. Ryan · 22 years ago

Since the Festivals thread is going quite well, I'd like to ask, what conventions do you attend?

For me personally, it has been Frucon (Past 2 years), and Beatlefest (9 years starting next week).  I am actually a paid employee of Beatlefest, meaning I make money for having fun.  It's a sweet deal.  I went to the 1st Beatlefest in Boston back in November as a paying customer though, and am thinking of going to Chicago Beatlefest in August of 2004.

I've attended, Frucon, Dragcon, Creepcon, a Doctor Who con, and many creation conventions.

i went to creepcon in baltimore last year with gordon. we dressed up like evil willow and evil xander, met the sexiest man alive, and found out that adam busch had a band. good times. i also went to the big feminist expo when it was held in baltimore in 2000. there were lots of great panels, i heard gloria steinam speak, dar did a few sets, and eve ensler performed the vagina monologues. it was an amazing experience.

A couple of Beatlefests... every Frucon until this year... went to South By Southwest a couple times during college (www.sxsw.com) and actually was in the same hotel as the Frulads and got to support them by partying at their show in this weird Mardi-Gras themed bar... also did CMJ, the college radio convention in NYC a couple years as well (think both were 1995 and 1996) and spoke on a panel and got free green hush puppies.  Cool things happen at those things... like at SXSW you just walk around and Austin is CRAWLING with musicians, everywhere!  Heaven!  Robyn Hitchcock was wandering around lost 15 minutes before he had to speak on his panel and I got him there... so funny...

Perhaps I'll see you at Chicago Beatlefest 2004 then!

Is your friend who went to the Boston Fest coming to Beatlefest next weekend?

angelmusicmaven Back · 22 years ago
No, John, I think she is taking her first year off of Beatlefests in a LOOONG time this year, think she may be going to Liverpool instead.  Not sure.  http://www.wtmx.com/picgallery.php she got a big Marilyn Monroe gig  recently though, check this link and go to the Bon Jovi pictures... how fun!

I am a convintion whore.  This year I am attending www.iconsf.org like always, http://jerseydevilcon.hypermart.net/ and http://www.torcon3.on.ca/  I was a geust at www.genericon.com this year and last year I went to www.iconsf.org, http://www.bigapplecon.com/,  http://www.5con.org/, and  http://www.icomm.ca/tcon/tt17/ and I was going to again but James Marster's canceled.   I think the bigger con whore's on FHDC are Rob and Karen!

Since Rob writes www.partiallyclips.com and our friend Mike pulishes a sci-fi/ fantasy zine called Nth Degree www.nthzine.com.  Rob, Andy and myself have been to quite a lot of good cons.  Rob and I have been to over 40 sci-fi and media cons with the zine since it started last Dec 02.  I am the con liason for Nth Degree and get the zine noticed at cons.We have been to www.iconsf.org, www.dragoncon.org  two of the bigger cons on the east coast.  Also a ton of cons in between New York and Atlanta.  Feeling all geeky lately but its fun to be a freak at cons and not get weird looks.  :) I am sure Rob could say a lot more on the subject.  Check out www.nthzine.com and see where we have been and where w are going.. :)  Andy is also an artist for the zine and here are your mad props!
