Discussion:
With what do -you- eat your fries?
yeah... the song goes "fish and chips and VINEGAR" and, although it's the vinegar I crave, I do also add ketchup so I voted ketchup.
Yeah, vinegar is my first choice, but I'll settle for A-1 if need be.
On many sites (this one included) people always have a "first post" post that is many times useless. As a result Fark.com automatically turns the words 'first post' into the word 'boobies' and resets the timestamp on the message to twelve hours into the future. Don't ask me why, but I thought it was funny.
I see....sorta. What was throwing me off was the "a la fark" as I had never heard of fark.com. That sounds like a humourous way to discourage the competition to be first even if you have nothing to say. I never thought of it as a problem, I guess it could be under some circumstances. *shrug*

mayo is where it's at. actually, my boyfriend & i both prefer poutine. however, it's hard to make "authentic" poutine here in Western PA (chicken gravy just has to do). mayo & extra salt are the way to go. or ranch. as James (the boyfriend & not the band) says, "ranch goes with everything." if pressed, though, ketchup will work... only if it's Heinz (tm). all other tomato-based condiments in this category are catsups. catsups are evil, the work of the devil (IMHO). of course these are all my personal beliefs & should never be viewed as an attack on anyone else's condimental preferences.
you should get a canadian to mail you some of the poutine sauce mix. Instant gravy - JUST for poutine!

...and Nitsa thinks I go to Qubec to visit her.
:) Maybe I should open an Ashton chain here...
*laugh*
I -know- you and Melinda only come here for the poutine :D And of course I chose poutine, being quebecoise and all that jazz. But I will haev ketchup or mayo or that McDonald's bbq sauce with them if poutine is unavailable.. or if its McDo poutine. Cause that's -evil-. And if anyone wants Poutine sauce packets, lemme know, I can ship them :D
Me too! Can we combine the order and save on shipping? :)
Yeah, I had poutine for the first time in forever when I was in Newfoundland visiting my boyfriend. I also had what they call "Fries Dressing and Gravy" which is what I would call fries, stuffing, and gravy. And THAT was really good. Now I get a thing of fries and a thing of stuffing with gravy on it at the local college dining center. It's not nearly as good as it is in NFLD though.

For most of the first 17 years of my life, I lived within a mile of the US's largest ketchup factory. (That's in Fremont, OH.) For several months through the fall and early winter, I lived with the smell of brewing ketchup. I couldn't eat ketchup for years. Thus, I have a full appreciation of the delicious taste of plain, salted fries.

I had to vote for poutine, even though I've only had it once in my life (thanks MC!). Normally, I eat my fries plain, but there's something about that juicy gravy and oozing cheese that would make anything better :)

atkins diet. i dont eat them anymore :/ i mean, i used to. and when i did it was MAYO all the way!!!!!!!!!!! :D and poutine.......mmmmmmmmmmm poutine!!!!!!!! :D
but honestly, after i went on the atkins diet i just had no desire to eat french fries, even when i went off it. but if i were at cedar point and was near the cedar point fries stand......mm..i dont think i could resist them with a ton of vinegar :D
Atkins?
Mmmm... donuts. Mmmm... warm buttered bread. Mmmm... buttery sticks of love. Mmmm... poundcake. Mmmm... chocolate. Mmmm... ice cream. Mmmm... :)
yes, yes, buttery sticks of love. one thing i forgot to get in my 1.5 month vacation from the diet. feh.
but, i can't eat ice cream anyway ;) but yeah - alot of those things were easier to give up than i thought they'd be. and you find substitutes. sugar-free chocolate isnt as awful as you'd think :)
Be careful, Sheryl - the sugar-free chocolate still has carbs in it - that's what the "sugar alcohol" is. Also, and I quote, "excessive consumption may have a laxative effect." You probably know that already, though. :/
actually, adam, according to atkinscenter.com:
"We have created the Atkins Net Carbs Seal to list the number of carbs controlled carbers need to count. Weve subtracted all carbohydrates such as fiber, glycerine and sugar alcohols, which either are not digested or are digested but do not impact blood sugar more than negligibly. While we list the percentage and number of grams of total carbohydrates on the Nutritional Facts Panel on the back of the label, the number of grams after subtracting fiber and sugar alcohols with a negligible impact on blood sugar appears in the circle, the Atkins Net Carbs Seal, on the front of the package. " so i can have all the sugar alcohols i want - i eat a sugar free cream savers candy that has 13g carbs, but all 13 are sugar alcohols. :)
Well, Sheryl, I guess our carb perspective is different - you coming from the Atkins direction, me coming from the diabetic direction. :) Whatever, I find that the SF stuff with maltitol, etc, is nasty, and just as carby *for me* as the real stuff.
The 7-serving bar is a CarboLite bar. Yuck. I think I still have one in my desk drawer. Yup.
also if you have liver problems you can't use it and it could cause you serious liver damage since everything is detoxified through the liver.
yeah. i've had my liver & kidneys tested, because the atkins diet can do funny things to them. i have a note from my doctor that says "your liver and kidneys look great!"
..i want to frame it. just because. it's a funny thing to have. my liver & kidneys are *certified* :D
LOL!!! That's awesome!
It would make a good conversation piece too! Put it in the living room or on your resume. :D "Yes and here's the proof that I have GREAT LIVER AND KIDNEYS!" *shows certification*
haha - one more thing, i have a GREAT story about this. :D the "laxative effect" thing.
Atkins has a line called "endulge" where the servince size is 1 bar, and the net carbs is 2. and the chocolate bars are soooo good. now, another company ( i forget the name) has one where the serving size is 2 pieces - servings per container, 7. but 0 net carbs. and had that warning - "excessive consumption may have a laxative effect." did i read that? no. i figured, oh, it's a carb-free chocolate bar! kick ass! *chomp gobble slurp gulp* yep. i ate the whooole thing. 7 servings. let's just say, read the warnings. they dont lie :D
if you want to treat yourself to sugar-free chocolate, try out Dietsch in Findlay. they have a ton of different varieties of homemade SF choco that is very yummy. their real stuff is even better. ;-)
What do they use for the sugar substitute?
That's why I can't have sugar free gum, diet soda/pop or anything else of that kind.
weird
Maltitol Solution is found as an ingredient in Excedrin geltabs.

If McDonalds fries, plain. If any other fries, ketchup. Mayo is SO wrong. As is vinegar. And poutine. :) Cheese sauce is acceptable. And I love to dip my fast food fries into chocolate shakes. And don't call me weird! I know I'm not the only one here who does that!
I've heard of people doing that with shakes. Another yummy option I learned from Sara is to dip them in the sauce containers at McDonalds. Fries + sweet and sour = yum.
Yeah...MyPaul hates ketchup but he dips his fast food fries in their little barbecue sauce containers. :)
Oooo. That is so good (Fries + sweet and sour sauce). Fries and picante sauce is also pretty good. I had very strange eating habits as a child though. I used to love potato chips with cole slaw on top. I also used to never like sandwiches. Actually, I still don't. I just don't like breaded food.

Since it was with what *DO* you eat your fries... I went with "some form of sauce of sorts" since I usually mix mayo and ketchup......
But if it was with what would you *LIKE* to eat your fries, I'd go with poutine.....mmmm.... That alone is enough to make me want to move to canada. :D

I picked "...other?" because I love eating my fries with Vinegar as well as Mayo, although not necessarily at the same time (though it would make for a tasty combination). I do use ketchup in moderation when neither of those two are available. I'm a huge fan of Malt Vinegar, which probably came from my visit to England (I can't get enough of that stuff) and I now ask for it at every Irish or English pub and Chip Shop that I go to. Mayo is my default sauce of choice at diners and other places that serve thicker cut fries...gotta love that creamy tangyness (or something like that).

For me it really depends on where they come from. During the few times I eat fast food fries (gasp) I only use salt. With fries at fairs, I use vinegar and katsup. With fries from the cafeteria on campus, I use seasoned salt and catsup. With fries from the snack bar I use katsup.

As long as they're not french fried Topatoes, because he is made of poison! :)

I'm no linguist, but tell me if the grammar in the poll topic: "With what do -you- eat your fries?" should have produced a poll that looks like this:
*fingers *fork *spoon *Something else *Eat them *doggie style*, straight from the package *Pete Best feeds them to me *I don't eat fries, you insiensitive clod!
well.....
it IS ambiguous as it is written--and formatted that way one would think that the best way to read it would be the fingers, fork, etc... way. HOWEVER-- it could be reconstructed to read... "you eat your fries with what?" to which the best answer is of the vinegar, ketchup, etc. variety. So. yah. it's not a perfect construction... but it definately can be interpreted in the manner it was meant. if anyone WANTS I can draw the syntax trees for both... but really...? does ANYONE want to see that?

At most places I just put salt on my fries. When i'm at Pomme Frites or at any Belgian Fries place that serves it I use peanut satay sauce.
I've never tried it that way, but I'm going to. Thanks, Gordon. :)
