Discussion:
Why do we all hate Jian?

Don't hate Jian. Also not blind to his flaws. I don't know why there can't really be a middle ground. Seems there's either a violently negative reaction...or defensiveness in the face of that.
I think he's very intelligent and I agree with a lot of his opinions. Not all. I think he's a good musician and like a lot of his Fruvous and solo work. Not all. I get just as irritated with the over-the-top jian bashing as I have with the over-the-top jian worship of the fishgirl days. Jeez.
Amen. Can we get a "I'm indifferent to Jian" option? Yeah, he irks me in some ways...but hey, I had my fishgirl phase, too...(and, why "fishgirl"???)...and I think "hate" is far too strong a word for someone I find a bit annoying. Especially when that person is (or was) part of a group I like and respect. :)
double amen. i still like jian. i always have. i'm glad he has his show and his own stuff - i say, if he's happy, i'm happy for him.
re: fishgirl. i have no idea. i know BJ is fishboy. maybe jian is BJ. so therefore, by the transitive property, jian = fishboy??
The next poll will be "We do we love Pete Best so much?"
I've REALLY gotta start checking my spelling here. It's "Why do we" obviously.
I think the option should have been "We love Jian, but compared to Pete Best, he's got nothing"

What happened to other? That isn't all the reasons to hate Jian.
I don't actually hate Jian, he hates me.
Anyone want to hazard a guess why Jian is writing notes on stationary from Disney, one of the most evil companies on earth? *grins*

I do not hate Jian. I like Jian quite a bit, as well as many of his projects. And I think there are a bunch of things converging:
So far, I'm the only one who's voted for "Too much time on our hands." Without concerts and fru-tripping, I think the conversations can get a bit dry. Jian is just fodder for wit. Jian has been the most visible of the guys, especially for those of us who don't live within reasonable Lesters-viewing distance. And he's also taken the most chances and gone in a more pop-centric direction. Making him an even easier target for music snobs like me. And have any of you read his weekly >Play letters? They're hysterical! But they totally have a tone of self-mockery. Even Gordon's cherished note from Jian has a not-taking-myself-so-seriously bent. We're just picking up the tone from him. I don't like the word hate, so I'm going to replace it with dislike. Then, I'm going to replace the we all with you personally, since I don't want to speak for anyone but myself, and don't want anyone else to speak for me. And then append Jian to Jian's projects. Then I'm going to get rid of the word Why altogether. Which leaves "Do you personally dislike Jian's projects?" Then I'm going to decide that this isn't really a poll question, and I'm going to post a new forum. It'll be something like this: "Do you like or dislike Jian's current projects? Which ones, and why?" See you there!

I don't hate Jian. Not even a little bit. If anything, I admire him. I admire his talent as a songwriter and musician. I admire his energy and accomplishments. I admire the way that he steadfastly holds to his convictions, way beyond the point where it is "cool" to do so. I admire the fact that he goes after what he wants, and manages to keep enough confidence to do so in spite of the rampant bashing on the internet of everything he chooses to do.
I have often said that the thing that makes Jian so endearing to fans (those who find him so) is that he isn't afraid to let all his insecurities hang out there... they were always out there for all uf us to see, in his performances, in his songs... in his need to make contact with fans after the shows. I think I've changed my mind about that, though, or at least my perception has been altered a bit. I think without any of that, he has managed to impress me with his accomplishments... simply with what he has made of himself. He's been member of and huge creative contributor to a pretty popular band. He has recorded and toured as a solo act. He is a published writer of opinion pieces. He is host of a pretty cool television show. He has managed to get the attention of enough people that there are those who actively dislike him, to the point that they will actually put time and energy into explaining why. Not bad, if you ask me (and you did). Anyway... without comparing him to the other members of Fruvous (because why??), I can say that I think he is a talented, funny, passionate, energetic guy... so what's not to like? Certainly there is nothing there for me to hate. M
sigh.
might as well put it out in the open: i have a signed railroad tie. i found it on the way to the car to drive to a show, so i put it in my coatpocket (it was a hoodie with a huge front pocket, like a pouch thingy) - after the show we talked and i asked him if he'd sign it. bad "screw" jokes were made. the end.
It's because it was Shelly's stationary.....I doubt Jian carries around Pooh stationary, but hey, ya never know. And I must say, that his writing of the Gordon note was one of the funniest things ever! Jian was also the very first artist to pose with Kakariki, the soon-to-be famous, toy Kakapo (flightless, nocturnal, burrowing parrot, and one of the rarest animals in the world). Since then, Kakariki has posed with Murray, Tory, The Arrogant Worms and the guys from EFO. And he was almost french kissed by Eddie, but the less said about that the better...;-)
Was this poll a reaction to the previous one, because that poll *was not* about hating Jian. It was about finding inappropriate artists to cover a Jian song. It was a joke. If the poll writer happens to hate the song, well, that's her right. That doesn't mean that she, or anyone else hates Jian. I really don't like the song myself. That is not analogous to disliking the songwriter. I admire Jian very much. I just don't particularily enjoy his record. I think he's one of those people who don't translate well onto record. A large part of his art is his personality, which of course doesn't come across in the studio. I think he's got a lot of guts to do >Play, and the CBC had a lot of guts to hire such an out-spoken guy to do the show. However, I think he needs a better wardrobe consultant. Jian, ditch the ties, man...and that purple velvet suit? Not a good look for you. *grin* Just my opinion....
When Jian holds the Tin Whistle and drum sticks correctly, then he'll be a good musician.
ARGGH!
What is so HARD about saying "I don't like such and such." Why does something have to suck. or be crap. just because some people don't like it. and besides, I have a whole other thing about using oral sex slang to denote something being bad... but that's another story and another poll (that's probably inappropriate for this forum.) ANYWAY ... I'm not that fond of his show, but from the bits I've seen, it has its moments. good and bad. From what I've heard, the best thing they could do is work on the sound for the live musicians that come on as guests. anyhoo. I'll end this hijack/rant
I actually really liked the show- the episodes I saw of it. I wish I could see more.
I prefer to call it a "twinkie phase." :)
And there are still "Jian twinkies" out there - they may have changed their choice of clothing (what I like to call "Quinn from Daria" whatever this style is - 1970s meets 2002) but they are still out there. Same girls that go to the Bros. Creeggan show expecting to hear all BNL songs. Or maybe those are "one weekers"...hmmm...
But your name is easy to pronounce Jay-See.
I better run and hide to Jacimas.

yes, as shocked as y'all may be, i'm gonna weigh in here as well.
ok...the whole thing behind the note was a big fat -inside- joke from the old-skool days when we all joked about jian and murray being fiances and someone having an affair with fordy and dave being someone's life partner. good clean fun. in turn, when i said i was gonna 'dump' jian for mike clem, gordon said that in order to do that, i had to TELL jian i was dumping him and for whom and i had to have witnesses or get a signed document. so i did -both-. ;) after his hugh's room show during frucon, i got him to sign that note, yes on MY stationery, and i wrote the top part and like lis said, that was THE funniest/coolest thing that he's ever done. if y'all could have SEEN him thinking of something -else- to add onto that and the wheels turning in his head, you'd very much appreciate it. he could have just read the note i'd written, laughed and signed his name, but he instead took the time to think of something clever to say given his joking back and forth battle with gordon over the years, so in my honest opinion, he went the extra mile.{and he even dissed mike, which i *thwap*ped him on the shoulder for....ask lisa!!} and i gotta say that looking at that note {in some cases repeatedly} at frucon -totally- made me, lisa, drea, leanne, jaci, andrea, and yes, even ^kat^ crack up!!! in regards to his show, i must say that i've always -wanted- to see it. the only time i've ever seen -part- of it was on tape at a social gathering where the majority of others mocked it, so i couldn't really listen or watch intently. hopefully some time i'll get to see one. and at -least- 2 good musician friends of mine caught it when they were playing in canada this summer and liked it and i'd trust their opinions on lotsa stuff coz they're pretty learned. so..in closing, here's my point: ~jian -doesn't- carry disney stationery. ~the only reason it has winnie the pooh on it and NOT my beloved eeyore is because a friend gave it to me in a cute bound notebook that i was using as my quotes/setlist/journal that weekend. you know my loyalty to eeyore -never- strays....;) ~i never intended for the whole world to see that since it was just an inside joke anyhoo. ~'play' seems like a cool show and i wish that -we- had a similar show on one of -our- channels{preferrably a non-cable one ;P} ~though i -do- sometimes feel that the persian cowboy can be full of himself at times, i wouldn't say i-hate- him. and i agree with melissa that 'hate' is a strong word and i was always brought up to 'dislike' people, too. so...yeah....happy Thanksgiving, American humans :)
Maybe the poll should've been reworded "Did jian ever leave you with a bad first impression?"
The answer for some is probably: Yes.
Unless it involves scraping teeth.
