«Kate Leahy» so, unless your parents are very, very vocal about not having alcohol around or very, very vocal and visible about drinking, students don't even notice (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «danced with Lazlo» the wording was a bit ambiguous (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «Kate Leahy» nate: it was actually kind of funny (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «Andrea Krause» sorry it took me so long to type...his explanation hadn't come when I started! :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «nate...» Gella: if you'd like, I could ALSO explain what michael was trying to say. ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «Kate Leahy» parents also had no clue how much their students drank or used drugs or had sex. startling, really. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:57pm) «Talcott» Kate: Which is why I'm all for openness either way. It's the same reason all the anti-drug/anti-smoking ads get on my nerves (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:58pm) «Andrea Krause» Heheh even I, with my alcoholic dad, would say for most of my life that "my dad never really gets DRUNK, just drinks a lot" because I couldn't see clearly. :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:58pm) «nate...» Yeah, the best thing you can do is be open and honest with your kids. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:58pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Yeah. Sorry for the ambiguity. I realized how unclear I was after I re-read it. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Andrea Krause» As I got older I realized he sure did get drunk. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Talcott» saying "Drugs are bad, don't do drugs" completly dies when the kid tries drugs and doesn't die on the spot (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» farewell fair wallers (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Kate Leahy» and i really think it's peer group that determines a lot of behavior. that's my experience, anyway. especially judging by the *drastic* changes in a lot of people's behavior upon leaving the house (either to college or otherwise) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «zil» bye my love! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «nate...» My dad always used to tell me, "I know anything you're going to try... because I've already done it all. " (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «nate...» hehe (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Kate Leahy» bye bye :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Yeah. I dunno if it registered that my parents were alcoholics when I was younger... (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:59pm) «Talcott» My parents just told stories. Both the good and the bad. Mostly it was about the smart way to do things, because they knew I would at some point (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «Kate Leahy» andrea: right. i'd say that many kids have no idea their parents are alcoholics mostly because they don't have a frame of referenfe (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «zil» my dad was like here... take a toke. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «Kate Leahy» reference, even (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «nate...» *nods* exactly, talcott (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «zil» and pass it to your brother. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «danced with Lazlo» .o0 there's so much to see through like our parents do more drugs than we do 0o. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «nate...» Mmmmm.... druuuuuugs. :D (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:00pm) «danced with Lazlo» when I was a kid we had this DARE-style anti-drug educational thing (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:01pm) «danced with Lazlo» i'd come home after hearing that Drugs Kill You No Matter What (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:01pm) «Kate Leahy» yeah, they had that at my grade school too (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:01pm) «Talcott» *nods* I had "real" Dare (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:01pm) «danced with Lazlo» and my dad would say, Ok, now I'm gonna tell you the truth (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:01pm) «zil» and the mistory of the where did dad get the money to pay the property taxes this year is answered. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «Kate Leahy» my dad did the same thing (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «Talcott» My teacher actually told us otherwise. I loved that teacher ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «danced with Lazlo» Drugs won't kill you unless you do way too much of certain kinds of them (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «danced with Lazlo» but you still shouldn't do drugs because they're not good for you (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «Kate Leahy» "i've done all that stuff. it's a waste of time, really, and too expensive. the end." (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «danced with Lazlo» they're fun and they feel good which is why people do them (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «danced with Lazlo» but they're really not worth it (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:02pm) «zil» how do you know what its worth to other people? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «nate...» It's true... they are overpriced. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» Oh, I remember the DARE type program in NYC called SPECDA. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «Kate Leahy» *way* overprices (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «Talcott» Right. My dad's big thing was "they won't really hurt you physicaly (he was obviously talking about lighter stuff here) but they'll make you just want to sit around, and that's the problem. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «danced with Lazlo» zil, I'm saying what my dad said to me (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «Kate Leahy» overpriced. argh. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «zil» ahhh *gets it* (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «danced with Lazlo» Chris, YES! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «danced with Lazlo» What did that stand for? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:03pm) «zil» *gets it for free* (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «danced with Lazlo» I remember we had a cop with a gun in our classroom (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «Andrea Krause» I've never wanted to try any drugs beyond caffeine. I think even beyond my alcoholism baggage I just have a personality that naturally strays from stuff like alcohol, smoking, and drugs. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» yes I had a cop too. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «Andrea Krause» And I guess I'm happy about that. :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «zil» I had my own personaly cop. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «nate...» me too (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «zil» *personal (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «danced with Lazlo» i have a desire to try certain drugs (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «Kate Leahy» though i don't really think you can actually ascribe a "worth" to drugs. in the end, you're out a whole bunch of money and you can't really point to anything beneficial that you could probably have gotten free or cheaper (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «danced with Lazlo» but only in the right context (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «danced with Lazlo» which hasn't arisen yet (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:04pm) «nate...» The dare program was GREAT, though!!! It taught me how to use drugs so that when I was confronted with them later, I knew exactly how to roll a joint, smoke weed.... etc. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «danced with Lazlo» as of yet ive never done anything beyond alcohol (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «Kate Leahy» seriously (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «nate...» I knew what all the paraphenalia was so I didn't look stupid... it was awesome (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «Kate Leahy» they even had homemade sample bongs (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «nate...» yup! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «Kate Leahy» "wow -- i didn't know you could make a bong with a potato! that's great!" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «Talcott» Kate: You could use that same logic for movies, or books, or any form of entertainment (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» umm..I think it stands for School Program to Educate Children on Drug Abuse. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:05pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» I remember the suitcase of drugs that the cop had. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Kate Leahy» of course you could . . . but for some reason, that was particularly ironic to me (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «nate...» The most stupid thing about the dare program was that they put weed right up there with, like, heroin.... so as soon as they saw that weed was harmless, a lot of kids were like, "Oh... well, heroin pr (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «nate...» obably is too!" and died. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Talcott» Kate: I meant about the value, a bit farther up on the list now (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «nate...» chris: yeah, I loved the suitcase! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Talcott» Nate: Exactly! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» and that we ended up going on a field trip to Staten Island to learn the evils of Drug Abuse. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Kate Leahy» nate -- i've always said that. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Kate Leahy» oh, right. well, perhaps. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:06pm) «Talcott» Hell, asprin is a drug. Legality doesn't make it more or less harmful (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:07pm) «nate...» unless you count the harm caused by other inmates in jail. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:07pm) «nate...» ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:07pm) «Kate Leahy» nope, just more widely available and, therefore, easier to abuse (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:07pm) «Kate Leahy» or more convenient at least (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:07pm) «zil» *shiver* asprin makes me sick... (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:08pm) «nate...» I never use asprin.... ibuprofin all the way. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:08pm) «Andrea Krause» I'm just mostly afraid that, as messed up as I am in pure form, I really can't afford to be messing with my chemistry. :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:08pm) «Talcott» Talcott - the real one has never actually used asprin. Couldn't as a kid, and I haven't started yet (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:08pm) «Andrea Krause» (without a doctor's supervision...heee) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:08pm) «nate...» andrea: never know..... drugs can only make things better! :D (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «Kate Leahy» i don't use any painkillers at all (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «Andrea Krause» or worse! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «zil» it reminds me of when I thought it would be good to take a LOT of them and chug vodka . (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «nate...» alcohol is a painkiller.... ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «Talcott» The thing is, there are illegal drugs (pot) that are a lot less harmful/powerful than legal ones (cough syrup according to a lot of people I know) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 2:09pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» ah..robitussin.
