«Talcott» hey all (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:41pm) «danced with Lazlo» everything I know about you pulled together tells me that you have a lot of issues that you've never thought to deal with (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:41pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» The problem with social drinking is that it becomes a cover for problem drinkers. Not that I'm for prohibition or any such thing. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «Kate Leahy» okay, anni. best of luck . . . have a good day. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «Kate Leahy» gordon: it certainly does. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «danced with Lazlo» Anni, we're not trying to gang up on you (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «lawrence» except that it still depends on the goal, as has pretty much already been stated. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «Talcott» *hugs* (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «Kate Leahy» one of my best friends started drinking at 13 while visiting older sisters at college and was a full-blown alcoholic by 14. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» back. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:42pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» You are assuming that there is one goal and that it is discernable. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Hi Chris (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «nate...» wb, chris (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Well, there are many problems with addiction. One of the biggest, I think, is that the only way to get better is to bottom out. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Kate Leahy» no one realized because they thought he was just partying with his friends (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» Hi Gordon. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Just my point Kate (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «ChrisChin is Getting Old» and HI everyone else on the wall! (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» there are lots of people who drink with no problem (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «Kate Leahy» michael: maybe for some people; but i think many people can seize the problem before that point (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:43pm) «nate...» Sure, and there will always be people who can't handle it responsibly.... but there will also always be people who can. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:44pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» There are also lots of people who have problems, Millions in this country (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:44pm) «Kate Leahy» gordon: yeah . . . which is why high school/college drinking cultures are so problematic (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:44pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» As a matter of fact the majority of unnatural deaths have alcohol involved (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:44pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Kate: Absolutely. But those people aren't alcoholics. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:44pm) «Talcott» Nate: Right. I don't think this is a pro/anti-drinking debate. Just smart/not so smart (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» None of them are? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Not one? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Kate Leahy» right, right, right (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Talcott» Talcott - the real one spots ah Zilpha (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Wow that's amazing (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Kate Leahy» yes, yes -- i'm not arguing a side . . . just spitting out thoughts (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «zil» whats amazing? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Reverend Gordon wipes kate spit off his glasses (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «zil» is that like "ahhh zilpha" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:45pm) «Kate Leahy» excuse me :) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Reverend Gordon kisses the hand of his fiance (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Gordon: Nope. Not one. The definition of an addiction is continuing in it, despite negative consequences. If you're an alcoholic, you can't stop. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «zil» *snuggles the gordon* (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Talcott» It's a long introduction..."aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh ZILPHA!" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Kate Leahy» but i'm also really hesitant to hold up europe as some paragon of responsible alcohol consumption (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» OK, now will everyone not named talcott please change their names so I can see who's who :-) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Talcott» I'm the real one ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «nate...» kate: alright... europe except for russia. ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:46pm) «Kate Leahy» i lived there, and i saw just as many puking drunks as i do here (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Talcott» Talcott - the real one feels like he's a sci-fi villian (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» So there aren't any teenagers part of the culture who can't stop. Interesting (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «zil» so it wasn't like "AH! ZILPHA!" you mean you aren't scared of me? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Talcott» Well, then there's my roommate (who's russian) who doesn't drink and claims that most russians don't ;) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Talcott» Of course I'm not scared (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Ahh the country with the highest alcoholism rate (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:47pm) «Kate Leahy» are you kidding? i watched russian cab drivers toss vodka on their windshields then swig out of the bottle (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:48pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» They beat out the french who lead for decades (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:48pm) «Kate Leahy» i lived in belgium, though, where beer is cheaper than water or soda (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:48pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» The worst is Russian Pilots. There is a problem with them drinking the anti-freeze on the planes (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:48pm) «zil» bit if we all used our own names it wouldn't be confusing. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:48pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» I'm the one who is supposed to do the confusing. I'm the confuser, not the confusee. That's the natural order of things. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:49pm) «Misch» "You're names not Bruce?" "Mind if we call you Burce to prevent any confusion?" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:49pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» ZGordon: seriously? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:49pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» I'd change my name to bruce now but we've done that (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:50pm) «danced with Lazlo» Talcott's Wife often gets annoyed with the black-and-whiteness of a lot of peoples attitudes toward drinking... (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:50pm) «Talcott» My roommate has very rose colored glasses about Russia. He will not admit to a single historical or contemporary fault aside from the few that he can only play down (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:50pm) «nate...» talcott: lol (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:50pm) «danced with Lazlo» in Spain I wasn't going out and partying every night like all the other American students (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:50pm) «danced with Lazlo» so one night when we went out together for some drinks and conversation and I ordered a Cuba Libre one girl said snarkily "I thought you didn't drink" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» Doesn't the same thing go on at Purchase? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «Talcott» but a lot of the reason they all went out was because they couldn't ever do it here, right? (when I went on the trip to germany it was the same way) (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «danced with Lazlo» right talcott (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «Talcott» overcompensation and all (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «danced with Lazlo» different attitude (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «nate...» hence the problem with having a very high drinking age (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» I forgot drinking ages. It was 18 when I was in school. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «danced with Lazlo» almost none of them were from New York City (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:51pm) «Kate Leahy» the spanish kids i studied with in leuven were the biggest drunks at the school (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:52pm) «danced with Lazlo» and for them getting away with drinking was a big deal (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:52pm) «Kate Leahy» the comment from one of them was "kids in spain are too drunk" (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:52pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» I think drinking is just one of those issues that lends itself toward dichotomous thinking. Being raised by alcoholics usually means you're either a teetotaler or an alcoholic yourself. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:52pm) «danced with Lazlo» And when Jason came to visit we went out and got some alcohol because he missed anise in particular and we wanted to have some fun (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:53pm) «danced with Lazlo» and when this one kid saw that I had some alcohol he started calling me an alchy (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:53pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» People raised by moderate drinkers tend to have the least problems with alcohol. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:53pm) «nate...» which makes sense. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» Yeah. That I don't know about, Gordon... (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Talcott» Gordon: That's where I am (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» It's a statistical fact (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» just speaking from personal experience, here. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «danced with Lazlo» I think Gordon's probably right (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Gordondon son of Ethelred» I'm basing it on studies (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:54pm) «Michael (foof) Maki» I don't deny it. I really, truly don't know. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) «zil» da da da de deedle dooOOooOoo ie. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) «nate...» ooooo... studies!!! *dum dum dum!!!* :D (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) «Kate Leahy» right. but those studies are notoriously faulty. (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) «danced with Lazlo» Why would you think that not to be the case, Michael? (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) «Talcott» There's very little that my parents either overly indulged in, or outright banned for me, so I don't have many innate reactions either way (Mar 31, 2003 @ 1:55pm) « Previous 100 entries | Next 100 entries »
