«Kate Leahy» and if my personal convictions informed my actions to the extent paul would suggest, i would boycott a whole lot of things. like the united states governemtn. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:08am) «Melinda J. Beasi» time were hypocritical. and i kinda don't see the error there. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:08am) «bored, bored, bored....» OK - since we're getting all philosophical here...I'll throw this out for discussion: Is there such a thing as true altruism? (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:09am) «Kate Leahy» heh (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:09am) «Kate Leahy» that's one of my favorite friends episodes (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:09am) «Kate Leahy» "i will not bring a child into a world where joey is right!" (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:09am) «Paul D. Beasi» yeah, but by law we have to give them money. if the government ran on donations i doubt either one of us would be ponying up any cash :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:09am) «Paul D. Beasi» similarly, if moxy fruvous held a concert with all of the proceeds going to the "bomb afghanstand" fund, i wouldn't be attending (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:10am) «Melinda J. Beasi» i'm thinking his point was, if you're saying that you went because you didn't care... well, then i guess you didn't care. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:10am) «Paul D. Beasi» (not that i think they would do this) :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:10am) «Kate Leahy» well, define "have to." plenty of people don't pay taxes. they go to jail, but that's a small price to pay for your beliefs. thoreau is considered a hero for (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:10am) «Kate Leahy» it. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:11am) «Paul D. Beasi» melinda's point is right... if you went because you didn't care... you didn't care (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:11am) «Kate Leahy» hell, i'm working for a volunteer organization next year that encourages its volunteers to default on government student loans as civil disobedience. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:12am) «Paul D. Beasi» i wasn't saying that you shouldn't be allowed to go... you should be allowed to attend whatever you want no matter (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:12am) «FrBill» went to where? (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:12am) «Paul D. Beasi» what your beliefs. but be honest with yourself. you chose what was more importnat (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:12am) «Kate Leahy» lisa -- by the way, i don't really think so, but i don't think that's bad. i think people are hardwired to derive some personal emotional benefit from . . . (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:12am) «Kate Leahy» . . . doing good (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:13am) «FrBill» you can't do that anymore (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:13am) «Kate Leahy» chrissy -- yeah. like people who go on unemployment for the summer and resume their seasonal job again in the fall. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:13am) «Paul D. Beasi» right.. though i'm not sure what the point there is, because you said you don't have an opinion either way (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:14am) «Paul D. Beasi» or did i misread? (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:14am) «I can see the bunny» I would tend to agree with Paul - if the cause was something I didn't believe in, I doubt I would attend a show no matter who was giving it... (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:14am) «Kate Leahy» anyway. i didn't mean for this to get contentious . . . but yeah. that weekend seeing my favorite band was more important to me than making a statement. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:15am) «Paul D. Beasi» i respect you for that, leanne :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:15am) «I can see the bunny» (and I'm slow on commenting tonight too - my brain only has one speed tonight *g*) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:15am) «Melinda J. Beasi» kate, that was his entire point. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:15am) «Kate Leahy» today things would be different. i don't think i would go. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:15am) «Kate Leahy» melinda, he called me a hypocrite. i don't appreciate it, because i don't think it's that catastrophic. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:16am) «Kate Leahy» lisa . . . any more philosophical inquiries? :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:18am) «bored, bored, bored....» Kate: nope. Just thought I'd throw that out. I'm enjoying this discussion though, I must say (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:19am) «Kate Leahy» well, yeah. as a seminarian friend of mine said the other day, "i do a lot of things i don't agree with. i'm going to hell, though." (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:20am) «Melinda J. Beasi» i think we're all hypocrites sometime or another, my husband and i included. but i agree with him on this. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:20am) «Kate Leahy» but, yeah, it's a great friends episode. "i let a bee sting me." "why?" "so he could look tough in front of his bee friends." (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «Melinda J. Beasi» (grammer fix: my husband and me") (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «Kate Leahy» "you know he probably died, right?" (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «bored, bored, bored....» Of course everyone is a hypocrite sometimes "Don't do as I do, do as I say (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «Melinda J. Beasi» grammar. argh. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «Paul D. Beasi» yes, i do all that and i speed, too (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «Paul D. Beasi» i break all kinds of laws (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:21am) «bored, bored, bored....» Do tell ;-) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:22am) «Paul D. Beasi» but i don't profit from it (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:22am) «Paul D. Beasi» and any movie i've downloaded i've not only seen more than once, but i've bought on DVD when it came out (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «I can see the bunny» wow - Paul's a rebel ;) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Paul D. Beasi» and any mp3 i've downloaded, i've bought the CD for (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Kate Leahy» then that's not technically breaking the law. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Melinda J. Beasi» i fail to see how breaking laws is hypocritical. unless you claim to believe that those laws are important. it's all about priorities. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Kate Leahy» as long as you've paid for the material. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Paul D. Beasi» which is why my wife and i have over 1500 CDs combined (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «Melinda J. Beasi» breaking laws is just crime. as simple as that. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:23am) «bored, bored, bored....» I regularly take 12 items in the 9 items or less line.... (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:24am) «Kate Leahy» i rip the tags off mattresses (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:24am) «Paul D. Beasi» if would be hypocritical of me if i was running a campaign against peer to peer file sharing (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:24am) «Paul D. Beasi» but i openly support P2P :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:24am) «soul groove feline» i sneak into 19+ shows to see frulads perform (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:25am) «bored, bored, bored....» I drink Starbucks coffee!! There, I said it. *whew* I'm glad I got *that* off my chest. ;-) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:25am) «Kate Leahy» there's an argument to be made that if you vote, you're participating in government and therefore it's hypocritical to vote and knowing break laws. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:25am) «Kate Leahy» that's kind of a stretch though. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:25am) «Paul D. Beasi» guess what? i don't vote :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:26am) «Kate Leahy» ah. then no complaining from you! (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:26am) «Melinda J. Beasi» i think you can participate in government without agreeing with everything that goes on with it. that's, in fact, the point of participating, is it not? (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:26am) «Paul D. Beasi» the only person i could honestly vote for is myself, since i'm the only one who believes everything i believe in. since i'm not likely to be running for (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:26am) «Melinda J. Beasi» and i do vote. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:26am) «Paul D. Beasi» office any time soon, i'm not likely to voting :)( (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:27am) «Kate Leahy» heh. i wish it was against the law to not vote. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:27am) «Kate Leahy» write yourself in. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:27am) «Kate Leahy» or natural law. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:27am) «Melinda J. Beasi» well i most certainly don't believe in biblical law. so no hypocrisy there. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:27am) «Paul D. Beasi» it absolutely should NOT be against the law to not vote. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:28am) «Kate Leahy» "biblical law" is a sketchy term. it means two completely different things for jews and christians. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:28am) «Shawna login infrequent» /me invents a law that tired fruheads should got to SLEEP instead of getting addicted to Wall. (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:28am) «Shawna login infrequent» :) (Jun 2, 2002 @ 12:28am) «Kate Leahy» *shrug* it's against the law not to vote in plenty of places.
