Hang on. Authors beat MPG??

This is what I don't get. I can understand preferring MPG but didn't you ever notice that at live shows Authors was played at almost every show and always got a huge crowd reaction while MPG was played relatively infrequently after the initial Thornhill tour? How can you be surprised that what was clearly the more popular song at concerts won?

I always figured "Authors" was one of those songs that hooked a lot of people, but didn't have a lot of staying power. I'm guessing a lot of the crowd that was drawn to Fruvous through songs like "Authors" and "King of Spain" were kinda fickle. Most of us who have stuck around through the years are probably the type who want a little bit more to chew on, musically.

Plus, "Authors" is one of those songs that is fun and energetic live. Being a performer myself, I know all too well that there are certain songs that get the crowd moving, even if they're not great songs. A few of my live song favorites never made it onto my CDs because they'd get old too fast. "My Poor Generation", on the other hand, is one of those songs that gets under your skin. I could listen to that over and over and not get tired of it (and I have...)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

a) Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to go to enough shows to pick up on that trend, and I'm actually kind of surprised to hear it now (not that I don't like Authors - I do, I just don't LOVE it), the same way I was surprised to see that it beat out MPG.
