   Discussion: House Concerts
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 1 month ago
I just hosted my third house concert; this one was by Jim Infantino. There are few things more fun than hosting a house concert. I've been to many including many by FHDCers. The first one I went to was this weird Canadian band that most of you never heard, something like Moxy Frugal, that played at Lori and Steve's house. Have you ever hosted a house concert? Have you been to any?

Yup. Great Atomic power played one in Burlington Ontario at the house of the woman who is in charge of the programming for Festivals in that area.

I'm thinking of hosting one here in Boston. We can probably accomodate around 25-30 people if we move stuff around right.

Any ideas as to who to invite to play? I'd like to invite someone without a large Boston fan-base so they can have some exposure up here. So, like, Russell and Jim are out.

One suggestion was Ian Campbell Smith.

Also, who in the area would be interested in coming?  We're in Brookline.

You know I would. His first name is spelled Iain. The Scots apparently put extra vowels in.

My other recommendation is Jonathan Coulton.

I actually did one with the good Mr. Bill.

Good times.

My choice isn't up there.

I've never attended a house concert, or hosted one, but I've played one before. Does that count?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 1 month ago
Good point. Did you vote for attended or hosted?
Rimbo Back · 18 years, 1 month ago
I voted for attended, because it was at somebody else's house, and technically, I did attend.

Wish I could do it again!!!

Yep, I've seen two Peter house concerts, and I think that's it. Very good stuff!

Well, I've been to several house concerts and have hosted just one, so far. I hope to host my second one sometime in March, once I can finalize negotiations, which I hope will be soon.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 1 month ago
If they give you any trouble with the negotiations let me know. I'll have a little "talk" with them; give them an offer they can't refuse. You get a lot more accomplished with a kind word and a horse's head in a bed than a kind word alone.

Never hosted one. Laura and I went to one at Meredith Tarrs' house to see Nerissa & Katrina Nields.

I live in a condo but we have a "Lounge" that should probably hold, I dunno, maybe 30-40 people? Just need a band!

I just hosted my fourth house concert. It doesn't get old. It is an incredible amount of fun. I was smart this time and had a pot luck dinner. That meant that much less work for me and that much better food for everyone else. It is part party part concert and all fun. If you have the space go for it. You'd be surprised at who you can get to play. I generally go for people not that well known because I like introducing my friends to artists. This time it was Lipbone Redding. I know he can always win over a crowd. It was my first time having a band play. It has always been solo artists before. It was cool having a stand up bass player and a percussionist with conga drums and a home made marimba playing.

I hosted the Winterpills (well just Philip and Flora) and that was a blast.
Wrenn · 17 years, 1 month ago
I was at that one Gordon mentioned at Lori and Steve's. I've also attended a couple other ones, in Baltimore and in Boston. (I 'wander' a lot) Host one?? no, not yet. After I buy my new house I'll think about it. (But I'm staying in Delaware)
