   Discussion: New Artists
siobhan's a londoner · 18 years, 11 months ago
Are there any new artists you have heard recently and really enjoyed? I know it sounds stuoid but I fell a bit out of the lopp on new artists now I'm back in Bracknell. The two artists I've most been interested in area young rock band called Be Your Own Pet and a new folk singer from London called Frank Turner. I thought it might be nice to share?

Always!

Last night I saw Sonya Kitchell, I pretty much guarentee you are going to be hearing about her. They are trying to make her the next Nora Jones. She's all of 17 years old. Her Homepage

Sylvie Lewis is also somewhat retro but is much lets say weirder. Her songs are witty, and well crafted and she can sing. She rocks. Eric Schwartz loves her.

Jonathan Coulton is hysterical, in the DVN/Eric Schwartz style. He writes songs about sex and nerds and nerds having sex. He does a song a week thing you can hear on his website; jonathancoulton.com

i downloaded a few sylvie lewis songs last year and wasn't impressed. maybe i should try again.

i think i'd probably dig sonya kitchell, too, but i feel like i'm being beaten over the head by her everywhere i go. her and the arctic monkeys. damn you, myspace.

I know what you mean about Sonya. They are pushing her so hard. She really is good so give her a chance.

Try sylvie live. I thought of you when I saw her. Eric Schwartz raves over her, what more can you ask for?

Sonya is going to be on Letterman on Monday April 11.

New and/or new-to-me stuff I've been obsessing over lately:

Margot & the Nuclear So-and-Sos, Winterpills, Of Montreal, P:ano, Architecture in Helsinki, Pedro the Lion, Cafe Tacuba, Missy Higgins, Laura Veirs, Ambulance LTD, ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Electric President, and The Go! Team.

Plus new CDs from Grandaddy, Belle & Sebastian and Peter Mulvey.

I love The Go! Team, I just don't see them as new anymore I guess as Roman put them on a mix for me a year ago and their album first came out then too before they got in trouble for all the samples. I treally want to see what they coem up with next. I'll try and check out the others though. Thanks for the tips!

The new Belle & Sebastian is pretty good.

I also like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and My Morning Jacket. But both are totally un-Fruvulous...

Jenny Lewis, lead singer of Rilo Kiley, has a fantastic new solo CD called Rabbit Fur Coat.
Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
I find her kinda boring with Rilo Kiley, but her solo CD is quite good indeed.

I agree with you there.

the pipettes: groovy-retro-cool catchy girlpop, complete with matching dresses and choreography.

rachel ries: remember what erin mckeown used to sound like? the interesting takes on old-timey styles, the cool guitar work, the lovely vocals, the thought-provoking lyrics...rachel's got it all. plus, she makes a good chai latte.

justin roberts: another local musician, and probably one of my favorite children's musicians. his songs are fun for kids and grownups alike, his cd based on the hebrew scriptures is full of great songs i can sing with my jcc students, and he puts on a ridiculously fun live show.

and i'm really looking forward to hearing the new/upcoming cds by the mammals, peter mulvey, jeffrey foucault, kris delmhorst, crooked still (man, signature sounds wants to bankrupt me this year), richard shindell, sarah harmer, and the ditty bops...just as soon as i have the money to buy them. :P

I like this. Fruheads know good music. Thanks.

I forgot to mention Anais Mitchell before. I just found out that she was a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Contest winner in 2003 Check out that list for other new artists.

As an aside, while none of the winners has played the Budgiedome [yet] some of the finalists and at least one judge has.

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while.

I went to college with that girl. :) So you know she must be awesome.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
You are the second person I know that went to school with her. No wonder she's cool.
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
Who was the first? I bet I went to school with them, too!
:)

The birthday girl, Lena . She didn't go to Middlebury, she was there for an Arab Studies program.

So the user tag does not work in forums, just on the wall. I tried linking ot her profile but had to do it with regular HTML.

Lately I've been turned on to:

The Avett Brothers -- Sort of bluegrassy, caffeinated/drunken love songs.

Josh Ritter -- Has drawn a lot of comparisons to Dylan, but, y'know. Beautiful vocal melodies, strong pop sensibilities. Most Fruheads I know would like him.

Fuller Still -- I can't let any opportunity pass for a little self-promotion.

. . but I've been really getting into the old blues music of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey.

There's also a Cuban hip hop band called Orishas, whose CD I just got, and they are also awesome.

If you like bluegrass, I recommend Hot Buttered Rum. They are teh awesome as well.

Well Candi Staton is not exactly new either but I hear her new albumk has her working with Will Oldham and Lambchop which is new, and a return to soulful form which is kind of new... Anyway it is new to me!

Where was I? Oh yeah have any of you heard about what happened with Gnarls Barclay the DJ Dangermouse project in the UK? Got to number one on downloads in the singles chart, aftera DJ used it on the adverts for his show. While T'Arctic Monkeysgot their break from My Space. I see this as an extension, word of mouth is a great way to hear about new music, or music that is new to you, which is why I still prefer it to soemthing like Pandora, for all it's use in killing time and stuff.
