Discussion: What is your favorite apple?

I voted for Macs but that is based on the distant past. I am now allergic to uncooked apples :-(
Strangely enough once they are cooked I don't have a reaction.
Kat Kunz Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I'm mildly allergic to apples, too--and cherries. I push through the mild annoyance (some tingling in my mouth, etc), but I do worry that the more I do this, the worse the allergy will get.

Also, I voted Fuji, though anything but Red Delicious will do. I've always found the skins on those to be too bitter.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
That is exactly how mine started. When the tingling spread to my throat I got nervous. When my throat swelled I stopped eating apples.
Kat Kunz Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
hmmm. knowing this, I may be a bit more reticent to indulge in apples in the future.

sad, because there's nothing nicer on a chilly autumn day than a freshly-picked apple. *sigh*
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I'll never understand allergies. Some get worse the more you're exposed to something, some get better. Bizarre.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Perhaps my mother is right, allergies and everything else bad that happens to you is caused by telling a lie to your mother.
*joolee* Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I'd like to think that bad things happen b/c God hates us.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Speak for yourself. God loves me even though I don't think she exists.
renita Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
hrm, do either of you suffer from hay fever?

this sounds like it could be Oral Allergy Syndrome
This is a Pseudo-allergy in that an allergy test will not show an allergy, but you still have a reaction.

It has to do with the proteins in the apple/cherry/whatever being similar to the proteins in a current allergen, like grass or ragweed or birch trees.

when you eat them, your body gets confused and reacts to the proteins.

When the apples are cooked it breaks down the proteins and so they don't trigger a reaction anymore.

In the past two and a half years I've lost apples, cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines and hazelnuts from my diet. Not only does my mouth tingle, but the nuts give me hives inside my mouth and my eyes swell up :p

^kat^, mine did get worse as i pushed it, but that doesn't always happen.
Kat Kunz Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
ooooh. I *do* have a pretty terrible tree pollen allergy, as determined by an allergy test a couple years ago. This makes sense.

I also get lumps in my mouth along the inside of each cheek after eating apples--not all the time, but sometimes. They don't itch, though--dunno if that makes them hives or not. I'm going to have to be careful--that list of items includes all of my favorite fruits (except for berries--thank heavens for that!).

thanks for the info, renita!!
renita Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
yup, those are pretty much my favorite fruits too, what was terrible is that i'd discovered the allergy to all but cherries before last summer. In may i had fresh cherries! YUM! no problems! so yay fresh local fruit i can eat *boogie* bought a big ass bag of them, ate maybe 5-10, and my lips started swelling and my eye started puffing up :p

and berries shouldn't pop up at all, they weren't on any of the lists i've seen. *thank goodness*

watch out for hazelnuts and almonds, almonds are still fine by me (they're related to peaches/plums) but hazelnuts are BRUTAL. it's because the proteins are denser in the nut meat.

no problem, i love sharing this because i was so confused about what was going on with myself, i don't want other people to go through the same process :p
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I do have hay fever but that allergy is a mere shadow of what it used to be. Most years I don't even take anything for it. I used to sneeze non-stop.

You are the only person I've heard confirm my theory of the apple proteins being broken down when cooked. it is the only thing that makes sense.

Maybe this is some sort of original sin. Now that makes sense, a fitting punishment for Eve eating the apple.
renita Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
me too. there's almost no coorelation between current severity of allergy symptoms and OAS. at least, according to the allergist.

and the protein thing was also confirmed by him :) but it's true, it makes total sense, i can also have small amounts of canned peaches and pears.

the one thing that seems to have circumvented that is i bought some not-from-concentrate cherry juice, which made my eyes itch, but not swell up (just a bit puffy) so i'm not sure if it was pasturised or not.
Rimbo Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Yeah, that sounds right.

I have an allergy to most melons (Cantaloupe, honeydew, water) and I hear it's because they're similar to ragweed. I'm just glad I don't have an allergy to CantaLOOP, because that song was AWESOME. Biddy biddy bop.

Where's the love for Gala apples?

Ah well.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
No loyalty to your old home, Rome? It wasn't built in a day you know.
Misch Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Rome apples are not really good eats in my book.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
No local pride!

I actually use Romes for baking which means I can actually eat them.
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Seriously! Gala are the best.
A girl named Becca Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
The love for Galas is right here, baby! Yum.

With Fuji as a close runner-up.

I've never been that good at determining the differences between different types of apples. I like the sweeter ones, though, whichever those are.
sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Try Fuji!!! :D you'll love them. they're like honey.
Nik Chaikin · 18 years, 11 months ago

renita · 18 years, 11 months ago
but i can't eat apples anymore :(
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 18 years, 11 months ago
I prefer sweet apples for eating, such as Fuji and Honeycrisp. But when baking, I like more tart apples, like Granny Smiths and Winesaps and hearty ones, like crispins and jonagolds.

I so need to go apple picking next fall.
Rimbo Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Chris and I are in the same boat. Apple boat.

Pink Lady.

Well, my real favorite I can never remember the name of, is only available from the local orchard like two weeks of the fall, and is like a huge, more-tart, much-better Granny Smith, kind've.

But failing that, I'm a sucker for Pink Lady apples when I can get 'em. Although they seem to be a little seasonal too.
Mamalissa! Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
LOVE Pink Lady!

How about Geoff? Or is that Jeff?
Andrea Krause · 18 years, 11 months ago

I never quite understood "liking" red delicious apples. I mean...I don't dislike them...they're pleasant enough to eat...but that's because there's no "there" there. :) They just mostly taste like crunchy water in a pretty package. Not much flavor. :)

sheryls Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

actually i find red delicious apples gross :D i hate the way the skin tastes and how the meat is usually a squishy mealy consistency, and the flavor is just sub-par.

i voted fuji, because they taste like crisp honey! ^_^
