Who should compose a musical

Discussion: Who should compose a musical

I thought we had this topic already but I can't find it.

I heard a song from Paul Simon's Capeman today and it made me think of this.

What contemporary songwriter would you like to see compose a musical?

Some people are obvious, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Rufus Wainwright. There are many that write in a more folk singer/songwriter tradition that I think would be great. Richard Shindell was the first to come to my mind. Some others are, Dar Williams, Christine Lavin, and Leonard Cohen.

Billy Joel should. You know, a new one. He's got that melody gift, and if he worked with a good lyricist, I think it has the chance to be good.
Elton already has, of course.

I really liked Striking 12. I wasn't sure if I would. I mean a musical based on The Little Match Girl? It really works though. It had just the right balance of tongue in cheek and stepping out of the parts and real sentiment.

A Play, by Rufus Wainwright.

I think he'd write a kick-ass play. Especially if it was like his earliest stuff [think April Fools and Matinee Idol]

most definitely

How about a rock opera? A folk musical would not appeal to my great taste.

Well not a songwriter, but Kevin Smith should write a rock opera based on his Askewniverse movies and have everyone from the movies come in and sing, even if they can't.

You know, it seems to me that he *has* attempted this, and it flopped in a major way, but I'll bet that I'd love a musical based around the music of Jim Steinman... I mean, it's all so theatrical to begin with...

it may sound strange and i may be hung up and strung like a cactus but i'd go with the boys of My Chemical Romance although it would be more of a movie musical type. i mean just think...an angsty musical...and i base this opinion solely on their exceptional music videos...

alright...let the castration begin...
