Play an instrument?

   Discussion: Play an instrument?
Elwenaur · 19 years, 6 months ago
Just wondering who plays an instrument and what it is. I play piano and accordion!
Geoff Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
I play the guitar. Very poorly.
Paul Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
We have a couple of accoustic guitars and an electric guitar in need of repair. I can only play a few chords. I got smart and bought a guitar tuner which makes what I can play sound better. Who knew guitars needed to be tuned regularly?
I found a used drumset for sale cheap in the paper, it was quite a bargain. However after a few weeks of trying I have discovered I lack any sense of rhythm. Someday I may take lessons.
My wife is the musician in the family. She plays flute mostly, a little guitar and piano. She has a great singing voice too.

instruments i play AND own - in order of earliest to latest:
bass guitar
guitar
keyboards
tin whistle
mandolin

plus i give a shot at just about any instruments i can get my hands on wherever i am. ealier tonight i was playing a violin. my next instrument to purchase is an accordion. actually ill probably get a GOOD tin whistle set before that, we'll see. if i had lots of money i'd also get a viola, and an octave mandola. and a real piano.

Violin, Viola, and mah voice.

My fav is the viola.

Elwenaur Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
ooooh! i used to play the violin, but i've always thought the viola was the awesome! much cooler sounding than the violin.
Brian Dinsky · 19 years, 6 months ago
Ooo, I like this thread.

I can play the guitar and the drums with reasonable amounts of skill. Generally, I can pick up any instrument and figure it out without much trouble, except perhaps the didgeridoo (sp?). And to perhaps take this question somewhat outside of the box, I'm pretty damn proficient at videogames that resemble instruments, i.e. Pop'n Music, Beatmania. This does not imply anything regarding DDR, as it were. That would be excersize. None of THAT, plzkthx. Pop'n Music is absolutely incredible, and seems to work out well for me as I am already heavily accustomed to the controller layout, and I'm sure most would agree that once you've got the rythym/harmony/melody thing down, it's a matter of conditioning yourself to eliminate the middleman between the brain and the music.

whoops, work time.
Elwenaur · 19 years, 6 months ago
i think once you've got a solid base in music theory and a brief explanation of the instrument, you can pretty much pick up anything and play it (even if it has to be on the simplest level)

by the way, yarr is a very awesome subject...

I play the clarinet. I'm pretty good, as a matter of fact. Other than that, I noodle around on the piano, but I am teh suck at playing with two hands.

I'd really like to play the guitar, but I don't have the greatest track record with string instruments. Perhaps next year at camp.
Annika Back · 19 years, 6 months ago

It's cool to play any instrument as long as you enjoy doing it, in my opinion.

I play bass guitar, I used to play bass guitar.. I need to get my bass back from Casey still.... *misses bass-ie the bass*

caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
I like playing it, only my band is frustrating. Because my work ethic does not pay off when there are people who never do anything.
Victoria · 19 years, 6 months ago
I play a little bit of piano and a littler bit of guitar, though I don't tend to give either enough time to get good at it. I played flute in middle school but I hardly touch it these days. People tell me I'm a good singer, so I suppose I am (though I could certainly benefit from some lessons). I'm focusing on carving a niche with English Handbells, as hardly anyone else plays them (certainly not in the folk/rock/things-that-aren't-specifically-handbells circles) so I can fool everyone into thinking I'm really good at it.
Elwenaur Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
Handbells rock! Yes, i've found that if not many people know about a certain instrument, and you start playing it, then they think your an expert or something.
derek harrison Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
handbells? you must be incredible! what are handbells like, tho?
Elwenaur Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
oh! i didn't mean that i played handbells....just that i thought they rocked.

I play trumpet, piano, and drums. I'm trying to learn guitar, but it's hard. I recently took up accordian. My goals: learn to play guitar, bass (caus I played it today and it was amazing), saxaphone, and accordian.
Elwenaur Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
yay! another accordian person!
Dan Back · 19 years, 6 months ago

Oops sorry, typo. I recently took up harmonica, not accordian, but i really want to learn accordian.

Elwenaur Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
oh, no that even cooler, because I actually recently took up accordion and want to learn harmonica (:
Dan Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
I don't know what kind of accordian I would get, and what the best brands are and such. I had a harmonica, and just picked it up and started playing it. I've been addicted ever since.
nate... Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
Did you check to see if there was heroin in the harmonica?

caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
I've been addicted ever since.

didn't you learn anything from DARE? addiction is bad. like drugs.

*snorts at anyone learning anything at all from dare*
nate... Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
dare is great! it teaches kids terminology and ballpark pricing so when they go to buy their first bag of weed, they don't look like a tool!

:)

Dan Back · 19 years, 6 months ago
Did you notice all out dare shirts had cigarette burns on them?
nate... · 19 years, 6 months ago
Is this "can play" or "do play"?

:)

Cuz I played classical piano for many a year as a kid (7, I think?)... and I'm sure I could still pick it back up... but I never do.
Ditto the sax.

The only thing I play with any kind of regularity (and by that, I mean "every couple months") is guitar.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 19 years, 6 months ago
I am trained in the viola and accordion. I haven't picked up either since high school.

I can noodle on the piano.

My real instruments are the kazoo and jew's harp. I've been playing them since I bought them because Jean Shepard played them on his show. The kazoo is the queen of instruments. I have a collection of them.
I also own a collection of shaker instruments, a slide whistle. I'm probably forgetting some other silly ones.

I have absolutely no rhythm yet I dream of playing the bodhron.
Rachel Marie aka RAI · 19 years, 6 months ago
Trained in piano (age 6), flute (10), obamaboe (16), guitar (18), and voice (20).

...Well, I was told at my voice jury that I have a "big instrument" so... :oD

I have a cello tucked in a closet somewhere around here.
