I was thinking about that while I was making my toast this morning.usually my answere would be: only if I'm desprate, but since the celiacs thing a loaf of rice bread or tapioca loaf costs us almost 5 dollars so hell yeah I eat the heels now.
Andrea Krause Back · 19 years, 7 months ago

With bread I usually don't. Also depends on the type of bread though. Sliced sandwich bread? Likely not. But in a fancier bakery bread...possibly.

Conversely...on a roast or something (beef, turkey, ham, whatev.) the heel is my favorite because it's got all the baked in yummy bits.

I do!
Although I always save them for last for some reason. I grew up with the idea that keeping the heel with the bread keeps it fresher (I don't know if that's the least bit true though)
Andrea Krause Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I can only imagine that's true in terms of protecting the slice next to the heel from air exposure so the surface stays squishy.

I grew up with that idea too. *nods*

And... I save the heels to feed to the ducks. :)

duck... eating... pizza!
Annika Back · 19 years, 7 months ago

Nope. I wont eat the bread crust at all. I'm not sure why, probably for the same reason you don't eat the peel to the potato.

nate... Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I always leave the skin on the potato.

It's the best part!
Annika Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I don't know about that... It doesn't look very tastey, and there must be something that makes it bad for you to eat.
lawrence Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
uhhhh, actually it's very good for you to eat. and it's quite tasty by itself, but a little dry, so I tend to douse it in butter.
sheryls Back · 19 years, 7 months ago

no, actually there's something in it that makes it good for you to eat.

Q. Is it safe to eat the potato skin?
A. Absolutely! In fact, we recommend it. The skin of the potato contains the majority of the potato's fiber, and many of the nutrients are located close to the skin. Wash the potato thoroughly, cut away green discoloration and/or sprouts and enjoy your potato with the skin on.

Annika Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Weird. We didn't ever eat them when I was younger I think my mom told me they weren't good to eat.
Andrea Krause Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
hear hear! And as lawrence pointed out, it's good for you.
zil · 19 years, 7 months ago
I have lots of hobbies, foo's!

HEELS RULE!

Perhaps a bread company should conduct a survey regarding how many people consume the heels of the bread. If such results implied that only a small percentage of bread users (yes, bread USERS) were eating the heel, then perhaps the company could collect the heels aside, and maybe donate them to the hungry. Sure, serious businesses are in it for the money, but I smell tax write-off.

THE PRESIDENTS SANDWICH HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED. ARE YOU A BREAD ENOUGH DUDE TO SAVE IT?

EDIT: I dont know JACK SQUAT about taxes, in case anyone had some sort of smartypants response. :-P
