Greatest Hits albums that don't suck.

Discussion: Greatest Hits albums that don't suck.
hkath · 19 years, 9 months ago
I know they're generally looked down on by purists. But there are some Greatest Hits albums that are just heaven to me. One of them is Crowded House's Recurring Dream, which I've had on repeat for about the last week.

Any others you can think of that don't suck?

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
The first album I ever got was Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits. I still think it is a great album.

Worst of Jefferson Airplane is a great one too.

I see nothing wrong with Greatest hits albums of bands that you really only want the hits.

that's what the iTunes music store is for.

Oddly enough, Blind Melon's "Classic Masters" didn't quite suck..

thankfully Richard Harris never made one x_x;

I really love XTC's Fossil Fuel.

Am I going to be forever scorned if I say I like the Beatles 1 album?

Best of U2 1980-1990 (I think those are the years) is good too.

The Smiths and James!

Matthew Sweet - Time Capsule. A slightly eclectic selection of his works (Until You Break!) from '90-'00, and two bonus tracks that rock.

Classic Queen - Can't beat it.
Brian Dinsky · 19 years, 9 months ago
BLANK CD-R! Who doesn't need a blank cd-r?!?!

Barenaked Ladies - Rock Spectacle.

What? That's a live album?
nate... Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
hahaha!

I was just about to post that one. :)

dgodwin Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Disc One isn't bad either, although I prefer the whole albums vs. the greatest hits. Talking Heads' Sand in the Vaseline is pretty good.
A girl named Becca Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Awww, come on.
"The Right Stuff" is so quality.
O:)

o/~ greatest hits packages are for housewives and little girls ~/o
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
ye gads...what is your problem?
Kat Kunz · 19 years, 9 months ago
his Very Best Of has gotten a lot of mileage in my cd player. And I, too, love Recurring Dream.

My problem is that if I start w/ a greatest hits CD of a band, I sometimes find it hard to make the leap to buying the back catalog of albums, since I figure I already own the music in one form already... which is probably why I don't own more Elvis Costello CDs than I do.
nate... Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Boy... where do I start? :D
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
"ye gads"? I'm thinking you mean "egads!"
nate... Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
It's kind of a combination of "ye gods" and "egads".

Songbill Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Elvis also has a huge catalog-- and now the old albums are re-released so you get two discs for each one (for an added cost) and it can be pretty overwhelming.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
"Egads" is a contraction of "ye gods"
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
My favorite contraction is "'sblood" for God's Blood.
Talcott Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Bah, I'll never understand you Doors fans ;-)

Dude, you get cookies for getting that. :-)
angelmusicmaven · 19 years, 9 months ago
I second Elvis, Crowded House, and Matthew Sweet (I also like to listen to his Early Recordings collection to hear the phase before he got really good, interesting hooks he wrote early on).
Also: Stevie Wonder's Definitive Collection is a pretty great retrospective. TMBG's Dial-a-Song is decent for folks like me who enjoy them but aren't hardcore. Same goes for Robyn Hitchcock's greatest hits. Tears Roll Down is a good Tears for Fears collection IMO. Very Best of Cat Stevens I like, it has a couple of the really early songs... hm. Oh, and the Bee Gees. I like to listen to hyper stuff like that while taking a walk. That's about all I can think of right now.
Talcott Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Yay cookies! :-D

I miss KiTH. Someday I'll get the DVDs though.

Oh! To make this slightly on topic.

Monty Python's The Final Rip Off is really good for a general overview of their recordings.

Not gonna lie, living on LI makes a girl love her Billy Joel, and his greatest hits volume 1 and 2 package set is pretty damn impressive.

Has anyone had a look at the Legendary Sun Records three-CD new release? I picked it up in London a few weeks ago and its a ton of hard-to-find, old school rock and roll. We're talking early-Elvis fun. Its really entertaining if you at all into that rough, old-record sound.

And I agree on Stevie Wonder.

heeeeeee! yay bruce.

Joni Mitchell's Hits is pretty good.

Its sister album, Misses, however undergroundy and culty my expectations were, is IMO a pretty crap collection of songs.
Nik Chaikin Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Good title then.
Will work for anime · 19 years, 9 months ago
....you mean she had more than one of them?

but seriously....Simon and Garfunkle's "Old Friends" collection is pretty good as well as Billy Joel's collection (the box set has all 3 greatest hits albums plus a Q and A session). Richard says Sqeeze's album "45s and Under" wasn't bad either.
Nik Chaikin Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I have the "Old Friends" box, It's in my CD player a lot, especialy disc 3.
Songbill Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
agreed.

how about "zounds!" for God's Wounds?

marvel's thor always went around saying that, it was quite un-pagan of him.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I never realized that was the origin of Zounds. makes sense though.

I like Thor saying that, a nice irony. In James Branch Cabell's, Teh Silver Stallion, Donander, A christian knight through a mix up in the afterlife becomes a Norse god. He is a believer in the cult of Manuel, a character in Cabell's books. Cabell said, in the end the only believer in Manuel was Donander, but Donander was god. I always liked that.

BNL's Disc One is quite good too, right down to the track order.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
yay! homophones!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
I hope you aren't homphonephobic.
Andrea Krause Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
E.T. homophoooooone
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
no! I'm homophone-o-philic!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
Too close to homophone-o-phallic.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 19 years, 9 months ago
ummm, yes, that's good too *wink*
