ok, so i tried reading a few authors mentioned in the song, but so far i've been rather disappopinted.� I read Doris Lessing's "Mara and Dann"...for a fan of sci-fi and fantasy books, this one really wasn't that great.� I couldn't feel anything for the characters and i thought the plot lagged in places...i supposed the motif of survival against all odds was good, but i just couldn't get into it.

next i tried Robertson Davies "Depford Trilogy".� I got through the first book "The Fifth Business" and half of the second "Manitcore" before i just gave up.� at that point i didn't even care who killed Boy Sauton anymore.� Very predictable and way too slow for my tastes.

I still want to try Gabriel Garcia Marquez but now i'm kinda nervous. anyone else read any of the MBLABOA authors?

As far as Gabriel Garcia Marquez's work goes, I've read 100 Years of Solitude and I thought it was amazing, very hypnotic. If you want a taste of his style without committing to a full-length novel,� you can try one of his short stories, such as "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings."

Most people's complaints about Marquez are about lack of story.

You read Marquez for the flavour, style, imagery, and mood.

Garcia Marquez is wonderful stuff. I couldn't recommend it more.

all garcia marquez stuff is worth it for me for the metaphors, but i do prefer his short stories to his novels.

I've read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"

Seriously creeped me out. But it was a good read. I also watched the film after I read the book. I'm not so certain that the movie really did the book any justice.

aw that's depressing, i love robertson davies! especially the deptford trilogy... well not the last novel. the manticore was my favorite of the three, but if i ever went back to reread them, i would leave out world of wonders, i really thought it was pretty bad. although i believe it was mostly because i expected it to be completely different then it was, plus the atmosphere of the story wasnt really to my liking.
the salterton trilogy i havent read yet, but i want to because i heard it was his funniest work.
margaret atwood is pretty good, i havent read much though but she does some interesting work.

i saw her speak/read once, at oberlin. she is super awesome. i really love her essays, political but with more than enough personal to keep me happy.

I'm in the middle of the Salterton Trilogy, and I like it a lot. Granted, I'm not picky with styles or genres, i like everything from science fiction to us history. As long as it doesn't drag, I like it.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of my favourites ever, although you may want to start with some of his short stories before diving in to Love in the Time of Cholera or 100 Years of Solitude.

The English Patient is a pretty good bet. Ondaatje is very accessible. Of course, I really liked Fifth Business and much of Robetson Davies's stuff. The Mario Puzo I read I -hated- but I think I chose something newer and less well known. I feel like I read something by W.P. Kinsella, and enjoyed it, but I don't remember what. Atwood's mysteries are really fun and gripping and fluffy, and I really like them. I'm planning on reading Naked Lunch once I graduate, since the roomie just read it for class and got a kick out of it.

For Ondaatje, I'd recomment Coming Through Slaughter over any other book. It's amazing.
