   Discussion: Instrumental Music

How do you feel about intrumental music? I love it and don't get enough of it. It's a funny thing but music consultants for classical stations always tell them, "don't play vocal music." those for rock, folk, and singer/songwriter music tell them, "don't play instrumentals." I'm not sure what the jazz consultants say.

really? the classical station here plays lots of vocal music. that's my favorite thing about it.

oh.. man.. I love instrumental music :). I went to the Rennaisance faire a few weekends ago here in vegas.. and I found some of the most AMAZING instrumental stuff there!

This guy, Scott Williams [www.scottdulcimer.com] was playing "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica on the Hammered Dulcimer.. it was absolutely fabulous. The rest of the cd is awesome too.. it's called "The Road to Lisdoonvarna".. I'm so glad I bought it!!..

and Chris Thile of Nickel Creek on the mandolin -_-.. jesus..herbert..walker..christ.. that man is AWESOME. ...

lets see.. theres Graeme Revell who did the soundtracks for The Crow [the first two movies] and Tomb Raider and stuff. which rocked.

so.. yeah.. huzzuh for instrumental music.

Everything that makes a sound's an instrument, really. The voice box, a stick against drum, a piano, a hand against an animal hide, a clarinet. You simply cannot diss instrumental music.

Define "classical"?
lawrence Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Normally, I'd define it as a certain period and certain styles involving particular composers (I'm not exactly sure what the boundaries are - they've probably been heavily debated anyway :) but I would guess in the context of this poll, what is really meant is 'something that's played in a large concert hall that you have to wear nice clothes for'. :)

I feel that definition discriminates against my New England liberal arts school's music department.

Actually...I just realized one of the most recent concerts I went to was jazz. Which is certainly not classical by any definition I know. So problem solved. (That means I don't have to get into the whole is-Romantic/Baroque/etc.-music-classical? thing. Lucky everyone else. :))

I'm not lucky I love that discussion. We need a new word, classical shouldn't mean music from the era of Mozart and also mean a kind of music that embraces all those periods and more.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
that embraces all those periods and more.

you should embrace periods, too:

I'm not lucky I love that discussion.

I think that implies something very different from your intended meaning. :)

Ugh. Baroque music makes me want to rip my eyes out.

Does Hayden fall under the category of Baroque? With all of his godforsaken Minuettos... argh blargh flargh. I play clarinet. Clarinetists get all the Hadyen.

dada da da da daaaaaaaaaaaah da da da da dadadadadada da da da daaaaaaaaa dada dadada dadaaaaaa.

Kill.

Ack! Blasphme! Baroque is amazing. Bach! BAAAACH!!!

Seriously, you just haven't heard the right stuff. *drool*
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Hayden is Classical. Symphonies are a Classical invention. Baroque music is characterized by polyphony as in fugues. Bach is the quintessense of Baroque.
A girl named Becca Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Word. I hate Baroque. Bach is evil. Well, J.S. Bach, anyway. Some of his sons were pretty cool.

I like Haydn. But I don't play clarinet.

Apparently I also like short sentences.

"We need a Donnie Osmond Renaissance!"

"Yeah, a Donnie Osmond Renaissance would be great. Much better than a Donnie Osmond Baroque."

nate... · 20 years, 2 months ago
They were one of my absolute favorite bands... and they WERE all instrumental.

Then, they decided to let future man sing... and it was ALL downhill from there.
They really went to shit at that point.

Pity.

But I still love the old albums and the live recordings I have from before that happened. :)

angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 2 months ago

well, then I guess for now it's all about sitting on your hands and waiting for Victor to tour solo? Oh wait... I've seen him live and he sings sometimes too. Never mind.

Hahaha, I love Future Man. Not on the mic tho!

nate... Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
Dude... see, he's actually alright when he sings.... or.... raps. He doesn't really "sing" per se.

But yeah, I saw him on his solo tour with... gah.. I wish I could remember who was on percussion.... at the iron horse. It was amazing!

that's where this picture came from. :)

Jay Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
whoa.. I took that picture...

See Bela Fleck with Edgar Meyer, they totally blew me away. They might have been the reason I started this thread.
nate... Back · 20 years, 2 months ago
yeah, I've heard that's an awesome show.... but with out the w0010.... it's not quite the same.
:)

victor is one of my personal gods. heh.
